    you can use paint thinner and wait a while and it just comes off and u peel gently, the paint thinner works really well when removing the spider dont, be afraid of wetting the spider spray thiner around the spider alot , then wait about 5 minutes and the glue should be soft then use a flat head to get under it and remove it

    this is how I do it as well....re-wrapping a coil with the original parts intact....handmade coils are super strong, last longer than factory made coils IMHO...all my handmade coils hold up really really well too...awesome vid BTW :D

    very awesome video indeed! and even more awesome is that you're answering questions people are asking! Mad props for not being a jerk like some other online people!

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 13 lety

    yep you are right about bottle and yes i do it by hand, it`s only 100-200 winds per coil. Old glue comes off pretty easy, glue debonder does a good job as well

    @seamokatinas  Před 11 lety

    thanks man. Never recoiled a JL w3v model, hope it`s not using an aluminium wire like w7 etc... Biggest reason for burning coils is using too weak amps which on the heavy loads start clipping and signal is distorted. That`s why i always recommend to use 30-50% more powerful amps then subs. Like myself using ~7kw rms amp on a 4kw subs. With the right electric supply can play for ages on a full blast without any issues

    thank you for helping me understand. That rumor about Audiobahn using fake voice coils in their DVC subs kind of hurts my feelings to hear that about a decent company

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 15 lety

    you not the only one who put them in a bin:) you would need to look for an enamelled copper wire, should find in most electrical shops

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 12 lety

    few reasons...1. wanted to show people that it`s possible to bring pretty much any speaker back to life 2. sometimes recones not available 3. price
    P.S just showing speakers can be useful before you throw them out:)

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 14 lety

    thanks man! usually they come off easy enough, if not u can use white-spirit or glue debonder

  • @igotyourpinx
    @igotyourpinx Před 13 lety

    Also, the sub has a VERY slight rattle to it, and if you pressing the top of the sub just the slightest bit uneven, it sort of grinds. On my other subs I can push on them however and it is smooth as glass

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 11 lety

    if it`s stuck don`t force to move cone up and down cos you`ll make even more damage...Just take it apart as gently as you can. As for the wire you need to measure old-burn`t one, every sub uses different, could be 22awg,24awg,26awg etc...

  • @tubical71
    @tubical71 Před 10 lety

    This is not *re* coning it´s re *winding* ....Very cool!
    Thanx for sharing!

  • @RadicalMotorWorks
    @RadicalMotorWorks Před 15 lety

    Cool, wondering if I should try it on a blown sub I got left with. Couple of questions:
    1. How do you determine length of wire needed for rewind?
    2. Is the wire glued when you rewind it?
    3. What does the multitester 3.6 measure indicate, is that ohms?
    4. For a dual voice coil, does the one wire go over the other or side by side?
    OK, couple more than a couple questions! Thanks.

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 12 lety

    good job mate! you just need to keep in mind that different cones have different parameters like weight etc...That means your voice coil can be under pressure or not so efficient, but it`s better to have one working instead 2 dead ones:)

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 13 lety

    I have a pair of guitar speakers that are'nt made anymore, the one speaker has a few small tears on the surround the other was mutilated but the spider was intact and the coil was still a bright copper color, can the old coils be salvaged for reconing?

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 15 lety

    usually they come off easy enough, if not u can use white-spirit or glue debonder

  • @Pulverrostmannen
    @Pulverrostmannen Před 12 lety

    yeah, i had everything of that in mind here :) the motor i use in my project is very strong and thats why that speaker broke in the first place, i am very happy with the result and how the speaker sounds and i doubt it will break again, in my latest video i play with that speaker in my room and got up to allmost 130decibels :D the QTS value sounds low and VAS medium. i simply love it XD thanks for watching too!

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 14 lety

    :) usually blown subs doesn`t work at all:) get a multimeter and try to measure resistance across + and - terminals. If you not getting any numbers even when moving cone then it`s definitely blown

    i have a question...i have dual 12s in my house and only one of the woofers make a rattling sound when i turn it up i was thinking it was the voice coil but im not really sure..i tried pushing the cone up and down with no power but when i do there is no rattling it only rattles when there is power going to it

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 11 lety

    yes apply heat resistant adhesive after each layer. You can use same type glue for spider and cone. Where you start winding will be your +, where finish -

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 14 lety

    thanks, new voice coil should be exactly same lenght as old one

    @redkingrd Před 14 lety

    wow thats amazing, u got mad skillz dude. i got a blown jl 12w1 and my coil is all tangles up inside the magnet, i wanna do exactly wat u did here, the only problem is i cant get it apart withouth damaging it, did u use anything special to loosen up the glue or did u just carefully rip it up? and how did u get the spider off too?

  • @doc289
    @doc289 Před 13 lety

    you count the turns on the coil, and also measure the wire?

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 13 lety

    if parts start to come apart then your voice coil not sitting straight on the magnet, that`s causing voice coil to rub on the side of the magnet and you hear grind noise.

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 12 lety

    you will need a 12-14v power supply, car amplifier and a lead that would have one end with headphone jack (connect to laptop) another end RCA (goes to amplifier). If you have home amplifier that is capable to handle 2-4 ohms will be less hassle cos no separate power supply needed...

    This video is a life saver!! you think there is hop for a seized sub ? I just drove all the way back home to California from South Dakota where i'm going to school just to get my subs. Come to find out one of my 12" solar baric kickers are seized. do you think there is hope to bring it back to life, and if so any tips on what kind of wire i should use for the recoil ?

    excellent work... I know that a sub is relatively simple in design.. I must re coil my JL w3v3 Any tips or advice? I hate to throw it away its only like 3 years old... also what is usually responsible for the out of limits condition on the coil?

  • @TheEntertainer93
    @TheEntertainer93 Před 14 lety

    where you put the second coil? over the first?

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 13 lety

    exactly same as old (burnt) ones. Usually 2 layers each if it`s dual voice coil sub, and 4 layers if it`s single

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 14 lety

    this one was totaly dead, but you will have to do the same cos your voice coil was fried and is loose inside. That`s where the noise coming from

  • @tmmtmm
    @tmmtmm Před 12 lety

    um, yes there is. You don't want your shiny new coil rubbing on the magnet, or the inside of the former rubbing on the pole piece.

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 14 lety

    if it`s a small crack then contact cement should do a job. Cone not that sensitive for a SQ, damaged surround would need a bit more accurate job

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 15 lety

    tape won`t work:) use contact cement for this job, apply it in a very thin layer. Apply the adhesive to both sides of the surround. If you apply the adhesive properly and get the surround back together as it should be, the speaker will be as good as new.

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 13 lety

    you`ll need to use heat resistand adhesive, apply it after every enamelled copper wire layer

    hello, I"m trying to fix an old Kicker L7 12" The voice coil is fine, it's just the tinsel lead wires that were the problem, would like to know how to get the glue off of the cone and voice coil wires, so that I can change them for new ones.

  • @seamokatinas
    @seamokatinas  Před 14 lety

    if the spider is ok then it`s a bit strange, in any way you will have to remove spider with cone to investigate what`s causing the problem, 90% it will be a voice coil

  • @seamokatinas

  • @seamokatinas
