- Is the 2023 Cannondale CAAD13 the best aluminium bike ever made? I unbox my brand new Cannondale CAAD13 2023, bought online from Sigma Sports.
Find out why I bought the Cannondale over other bikes around the £2,000 price range, how my experience was of buying it online, and hear my first impressions. Stolen bike = new bike day!

My CAAD10 is still going strong 12 years later! CAADs are fantastic bikes!
12 years already? feels like yesterday 😅
I bought my CAAD 13 2 years ago. I never regret that i did not get a full carbon paying $1000 more. Instead i just lost over 20 pounds of my weight in 1 year )) I love cycling - i've been doing it for almost 20 years. Now my average is 200-250 miles a week at 16-17 mph. I am almost 50 and i will never win any race but i do not care )
Great choice Jake and love the unboxing. Enjoy the new bike!
I bought the bike with 105 in December 2022 for 1800 Euros as they are on sale everywhere in Germany. Changed the seatpost to a carbon one without setback and the handlebar to my shoulders width, then paired the bike with a set of Fulcrum Racing Zero. It is now 8.3 Kg and I love it. :) The bike can be further improved by changing the crankset to SI SL version and the chainring to 8 arm version. With other small things it can come down to 7.5 Kg.
I've put 10k km on my CAAD13 in the last two years. I'm still as excited about riding it as the first day. Amazing machine that puts a smile on my face
Happy new bike day Jake, I hope you have many a happy ride on it and long and happy relationship with her.
Thank you!
Bought a Cannondale Optimo 2 from Sigma. Very impressed with the delivery - fast, no damage and put together well! I bought it as a winter bike but I absolutely love the geometry (I believe it’s similar to the CAAD). You were right to downsize as the reach is long. I’m 5’11 and I got the 54 - fits like a glove. I think you’ll love it mate!
I've been riding a caad optimo 105 for four years, many times heavily loaded with bikepacking equipment (of course for road riding) and the bike is practically indestructible, very good quality, I wish you a lot of riding pleasure!
Great to hear! I'm hoping to do some bikepacking on this bike too at some point
New bike day is always a great day! Looks like a good choice.
Hoping I've chosen well! There's more pressure buying this time round when there's actually a bit more stock (and therefore options!) knocking around
Dude I will 100% agree with you. My coworker talked me into one because we had it in the back in a box so I built it with no thought of buying it and half way through the build I went and paid for it😂😂 and it doesn’t ride like most aluminum frames do it rides so good. And you can put pretty big tires on it
How big of a tire were you able to fit or do you think it will take ?
That has become an important factor for a bike to me. Bigger tires =smother ride.
30mm easily, maybe 32 to be honest
Hey Jake! I saw this video on my YT feed. I see you're joining the "Aluminati!"
The CAAD series is an amazing frameset that punches well above it's price point. Similar to your Trek Émonda ALR, it can be spec'd out to race / time trials or on the other hand, ultra distance rides / bike-packing. All of this is great value for the money you pay. The frame is lightweight and strong enough to compete with the best of the carbon frames out there. I don't have the '13 but I do have the older CAAD8 and CAAD12, both of which are amazing.
Have fun! It's an amazing bike.
That's good to hear, thank you! I'll be learning towards the distance and bikepacking for sure - what might you upgrade or swap first to improve the bike in that direction?
@@JakeMay I have a somewhat radical idea: Have you looked into the RedShift Shockstop system? It's a suspension system for road bikes to mitigate bumps and vibrations. There's a stem that you can purchase that has adjustable elastomers inside which can deflect up to 20mm for the handlebars. It's made my old CAAD8 a lot less harsh to ride for long distances. In addition, they offer a seat post mounted system that can absorb forces down the seat. I am not sure if that is compatible with the CAAD13 seat post mounts, since it looks proprietary to Cannondale. And, perhaps a new set of carbon wheels that uses steel spokes? You can find cheaper options from Asia like 9Velo or ICAN or Winspace that can be had for less than 900 quid. I got an ICAN 50mm wheelset with Sapim CXray spokes that is relatively comfortable and smoother than the expensive ones with carbon spokes. They ride a lot cushier than the Campagnolo Zondas or Scirocco I've tested.
Nice video, thanks for it!
After I read few reviews and opinions I ordered one piece too (am excited and nervous right now, waiting to be shipped).
Everywhere where I see, people say that is the best riding aluminium bike on the market. I'd like to know your opinion.
Also, to answer your latest question: in this price range (or even cheaper?) is the Rose SL Pro, that I wanted to buy a few months ago. Unfortunately, it wasn't in stock in my size and the waiting times were darn long. I'm eager to see how the Caad is.
May you have good, long and incident free rides on yours!
Sad to hear about your bike getting stolen. But great to see you have a CAAD now.
Nice video ! Great bike! Why didn't you consider a trek domane al 5 or alr 5?
Best of luck with your new bike. I recently purchased a Bianchi via nirone 7 105 with rim brakes. Mine was a little cheaper than yours €1425, though both of us i believe don't have 105 crank. Am a little surprised at cost of yours but I think you got bettet tyres and perhaps wheels too. Am happy with mine, once your happy with yours, all that matters. Happy cycling
Happy cycling!
Ive got that rear derailleur with an 11-36 cassette that i got from ebay because shimano dont make them that big but it works flawlessly!
Great to know! Yeah as I was editing I realised it could take upto a 36
Great bike! Have fun be safe!
CAAD13 is a good choice. Looking forward to seeing you on it.
Still need to actually get out on the thing! Been wiped out with some virus for a few weeks, very frustrating... Hopefully this weekend!
i am going to get one too this year!
I do like my CAADs, also on a 13. Only annoying thing is the seatpost creaking. Have to take it out and regrease/paste far too often. Never had an issue on my CAAD10 which I think was my fav bike.
There's definitely occasionally a creak coming from somewhere..!
the new whip looks real nice
FORTY EIGHT! Didn’t even know Cannondale did children’s bikes! 😂 (Good video!)
Just ordered a 54cm Caad13 in the same matte black colorway here in the states. Question Jake - the chainring online for mechanical 105 is 52/36 with the Di2 at 50/34 - but I see yours is 50/34. Was this custom for you or is there an error on the specs at Cannondale's website. the UK and USA site are the same 52/36. Thanks for the content!
Good spot! Either that's an error on the video or the spec has changed since I bought it - I haven't actually counted them, but the shop I bought it from is (now at least) listing it as 52/36
Very nice video, my friend just purchased this bike in black. As we all do not want our bikes stolen, your opinion this all black bike may not be as attractive for a thief was a good call.
looks really good!
👌
What kind of bottom bracket does it have?
Been looking for a rim brake version but everything is sold out for months
I think you made a great choice
Looks good! Hope you have a great time with your new bike mate. Putting a big curse on the bike thief!
Haha cheers bud
Wiggles Prime Doyenne endurance saddle with cutout is very comfortable and reasonably priced..
Will take a look thanks!
Great job,
I bought my Caad 10 in 2014. Still love it!! It's a fantastic bike. I've got rim brakes so it has chewed throug 3 sets of wheels. Does the Caad 13 have threaded bottom bracket?
Great to hear! I think it's pressed rather than threaded - it was one of the things that past reviews had picked up on to be fair. It's kind of outside of my knowledge and experience for me to know the difference yet to be entirely honest
@@JakeMay Press-fit is great when it works. It is light and stiff, but it will start to creak. I switced mine to threaded when the front chainrings was worn down. Used an adapter. Haven't creaked since. Great video by the way. Enjoy your new bike. You will love it!!
Hopefully the creaking is consistent with the amount of power being out down - in my case, minimal! Aha
@@JakeMay 🤣😂 That is watt I call a win/win situation 😂🤣
The CAAD13 is still on BB30A, just like the CAAD12.
For the price i would say the canyon endurance sl8 with 105 di2 would be a good alternative, aswell as the merida scultura 105, scott addict 30 or the orbea orca 30. the 3 have shimano 105 equipped and are carbon fiber frames
Yeh for some reason I didn't feel ready to go with electronic shifting or carbon fibre! Irrational maybe
@@JakeMay I'm on a alloy bike as well, a shame that has claris on it, but does the job the same, waiting on the caad 14 tbh, if it isn't crazy money. Might be my next bike.
@@bernardo9202 sorry to break it to you but it will be crazy money 😆
@@bernardo9202 before you ask me how I know, it’s simple really.
New 2022 Allez Sprint released and it’s more expensive than the older ones.
New Trek Emonda ALR released 10 days ago in my country and Japan and yup! Definitely more expensive than the previous gen.
If there’s a newer CAAD, doesn’t take a Sherlock Holmes to figure out where the price is heading
sick
Cheers m8
I would have recommended CAAD13
105 Di2 it’s slightly more expensive but worth it
In Dante's inferno he writes about a special layer of hell for bike thieves.
Nice bike 👍🏿
Ah mate! So sorry about your Trek, just horrid. As an upside I have the CAAD13 too though and *absolutely* love it! Just an amazing machine. I got it in 2020 and have been very very happy with it. Actually really comfy for an alloy frame (Especially with some wider tyres). One thing I found that was a problem which may be me specific but worth watching is the amount of chains and cassettes I've gone through... It seems to need a new chain every 6months to a year (!) My bike shop in Lewisham (The Cyclery, can recommend if you've not been) advised some updated parts which have survived much better (Still 105) and also enabled me to get a compact chain ring as the one it came with was a bit spicey! I also needed a new set of wheels about 5months ago as the ones that came with mine (not DTSwiss in 2020 I don't think) had fully closed freehubs so when they went they were basically gone. I went with the Prime Douene carbon ones which were tubeless and love 'em n all! Hope you have many great rides on the wee beasty!
I can check "bike getting nicked" off the bucket list at least 😂 next up: crashing! Glad to hear you're enjoying it. I did read that about the old wheels but heard they'd resolved it with the DT Swiss. Cyclery is also my local! Good tip re: fast wear. Cheers!
I have a 2015 super six eco with ultegra for a steal, back in 2016, for $1500.
Irrespective of what I paid, I’m just shocked that $2300 for a 105 set aluminum bike. I mean I haven’t been following the market for bikes and know raw materials + supply chain issues + general inflation has caused prices to go up but it just shocking.
But I know a CAAD is an amazing bike frame and must be a stellar ride with 105 set
2015 is a long time ago unfortunately! 😂
@@JakeMay yeah I know
I think a CAAD12 in 2017 was $1800 for 105 so around a 40% increase over 7 years which would make sense
I’m just dumbfound on prices of bikes - nevertheless such a great bike frame + group set
Enjoy it
Yeah, the cost if everything is savage at the mo 😭 but I couldn't not replace my road bike, it's too important for my brain and happiness
i think you should invest in better locks and alarm?
Thanks Bill
My flashy looking bike recently got stolen & I also replaced it with a black less conspicuous bike
Great minds 😂
Congratulations on NBD! And sorry for your stolen Trek. I own Trek Domane AL and it's all custom built arund the stock frame so I don't know how CAAD rides but Domane is also a great endurance aluminium bike. Cheers!
I did consider the Domane! I felt like I wanted a more aggressive position rather than an endurance bike (I'm quite flexible so can handle the position for longer I feel!)
Nice bike. Enjoy it.
Thanks! I still need to get out on it for a ride
having your old bike nicked has come up trumps - big fan of the CAAD
You should try having your bike nicked!
That sucks stolen bike 😢. 100% agree bike size has nothing to do with overall height inseam and reach are the most important parts . I'm similar height your and ride a small and X's giant defy then only thing to note with the X's is the bar width at 40cm far to small for me with 48" chest had to replace them and add a longer stem but fits like a glove #shortarse 😂😂 great content as always lock the new bike on the balcony or don't leave it out 👌
I'm quite a narrow guy so hoping I won't need to go any wider on the bars! Yeh the new bike won't be staying outside ever 😂
Give me CAAD12. It has internal routing all to the rear derailleur. Therefore, I will keep my Specialized Sprint Allez Sport.
Nice knife, rims and plant 😉
Swiss perfection
@@JakeMay add some food 🫕 and you're adopted 😄
Sigamsports is great. Sadly brexit is a thing and now i cant buy from the best cannondale spare parts dealer.
The best alu bike for me in term of price/equipment is the canyon endurace al 7 (shimano 105) with a weight of 9.20kg for a total price of 1499€ ~1310£
Nice bike overall (just a bit expensive compare to canyon) enjoy !
Cheers!
CAAD 9 is the BEST Cdale ever produced.
34 - 34 is not the best thing for the rims (considering your potential upgrade of the cassette to 11-34)
Why's that?
Does chunky welds for theft deterence sounds like a marketing excuse for shit welding 🤔...if aluminium is so good why do they spec carbon forks🤔
A 2023 alu/carbon bike is only 1kg lighter than my all steel bike...from 1985?! 🤔....jokes aside the CAAD Series have always been top of my wishlist. 👍
Spent about 500 miles on it and so far so good. czcams.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA Pros:1. Very light2. Solid quality build3. Fast delivery: It arrived 5 weeks earlier than expected.4. Easy assemblyJust a few cons but nothing major:1. Cheap tin tubes and had flat on first day... but not a big deal. I replaced the tubes.2. Seat is a bit uncomfortable but that's pretty much the same situation with most bikes.3. Seat post is a bit long/high for a smaller size 48 bike - had to saw 2 inch off to fit properly. The lowest setting is too high. The post locking system does not seem to hold well (perhaps because I saw 2 inch off).4. wheels are not tubeless compatible (from what I can tell)
I thought You are Jack Miller
I'm not intimate with the details of VAT which could be playing a major role here, but 2300 for that is far from a good deal. Which generally tracks with what is widely available here. Brands like trek, Cannondale, and giant all seem to charge a considerable amount more for less. Again I understand the taxation difference but I paid only a few hundred dollars more for a titanium framed bike with full Ultegra R8000 (including the cranks, they didn't cheap out with fsa) and a solid mavic wheelset. Sure the bike was a 2022 model on discount to make way for new models but with the industry crash looming deep discounts are everywhere.
I liked my caad10 well enough, though it was too long for me, but yeah mate 2300, no bueno.
VAT is 20%. Inflation is also absolutely crazy in the UK at the moment, has been something like over 10% over the last 12 months
Clamp on the seat post not the top tube!!
I barely applied any pressure, this was fine!
@@JakeMay Watch any YT video featuring a competent bike mechanic and see how they do it. Alternatively just carry on as you are and see what happens if you have to apply any real force to what you are doing. You obviously know best.
@@ashleyhouse9690 I'm fully aware you should usually clamp on the seat post. In this instance what I did was absolutely fine. Thanks for your concern though!
Step 1 is insert the seatpost so the bike can be properly clamped in the stand
Not needed with alu frame
This was my logic. Also it was not clamped down with any pressure
huh?
I can not believe that you didn't clamp on the seat post! Unfollowed.
Hide an Apple Air Tag on the bike somewhere it won’t easily be seen. The police will follow them.
Certainly wishing I'd done that!
Caad12 better than 13
Why? Do you have experience with both?
@@DaveCM I doubt he/she does.
And I bet the fella is one of those Caad 12 > everything else in the world 😂
Oh and that cult of Caad 12 + deep dish wheels for every crit there possibly is
@diesel CAAD 11 was so crappy that nobody on earth owns one. 🤣
Caad10 is better than both 12 and 13
I think Made in USA CAAD's are superior
