9 FACTS about cycling kit you NEED to hear
The cycling apparel industry is in CRISIS. From greenwashing and poor working conditions to a lack of innovation and never-ending sales. How have we ended up here? And does it have to be this way?
Ed Bartlett is the founder of Kostüme - an innovative cycling kit brand rejecting the norms of the fashion industry in an attempt to make change for the better. Ed busts a load of myths, shares some surprising facts, and let's us in on some uncomfortable truths about the state of the cycling apparel industry today.

Cutting out the nonsense
zhlédnutí 269Před 14 dny
Sometimes as a London cyclist you simply can't be bothered with the suburbs - the slow residential roads, the endless traffic lights, and the impatient drivers who wish you didn't exist. The solution is simple - get a train through it and cut out all the nonsense! Join me and Trev on a scenic, speedy and - most importantly - extremely flat ride from Paddock Wood in Kent, Nonsense chat, big tune...
Bikepacking Bliss: Norfolk, The Long Way Round

On the east coast of England, around 100 miles north east of London, is the historic county of Norfolk. Famous for its flat terrain and its stunning countryside, as well as its historic cities and seaside towns, it's an ideal destination for hiking and bikepacking. And, with its miles of disused train lines now converted to walking and cycling paths, it's a particularly appealing option for tho...

    I feel like the bass layer is by far the most important part of your kit. Before I got into high-end base layers, I had a lot of problems with comfort. I would work too much clothing on cold days and not enough on warm days. Once I looked into the science of it, it made a lot of sense. I always look like I’m wearing too much clothing in the summer (I wear arms and leg coolers as well), but I am always more comfortable than the people I’m riding with. It’s easy to tell, especially in the summer because people are sweating like crazy and I’m not visibly sweating at all - it’s all going through the base layer and evaporating so fast that I can be getting chills at 40°C. The key, of course, is to stay hydrated, else evaporative cooling won’t happen.

    I unicycle or ride my fixed gear road bike to work and home 12 miles a day. I spend lots of time on cycles. I love separate bike trails and smooth sidewalks. I treat every car like they are probably going to try to hit me so be ready to dodge. Sure it could be overkill but i play in the street a lot and ive had no issues.

    Dont need cream? Hm. I spent so mutch money for fitting and measuaring my bike and body at GeBiomized to fit my bike and find the right saddle, still wasted a bazillion on bibs and saddles and yet I have to find a combination that wont make me sore and/ore gives me painful pimpels. Without cream (I use a medical one, Ilon Protect) I would not be able to ride more than 30 mins. I Think the main problemis that everything is designed for athletes with perfekt bodys

    I tried chamois cream a couple of years ago and learned it did help with these low-quality/cheap/entry-level shorts I bought. Once I got good quality shorts (Pearl Izumi Pro) all my discomfort was gone -- no more cream needed! I didn't like using the cream anyway.

  • @albertdee1139
    @albertdee1139 Před 3 dny

    Maybe because I'm a very heavy sweater when riding in the heat or indoors, I definitely need Chamois cream. I get pimply almost boil like bumps if I don't use which become very painful. I don't rub it into my chamois but do rub it over the peritoneum area ad bottom of glutes right onto my skin. Makes riding (especially long rides) much more comfortable for me.

    It’s absolutely not true that excess product goes into landfill, brands/stores and sites etc will just hold stock and keep reducing prices until it’s sold we’ve all seen that three season old top on a XXL on sale for 10% rrp… that’s what they do not just landfill 😂😂😂

  • @daveanolik8837
    @daveanolik8837 Před 3 dny

    #9 is the True North message of this video. I’m, probably like everyone here, totally addicted to cycling. The waste drives me crazy: plastic bottles, trashed tires and tubes (and sealant), stretched chains, used bar tape, dead batts, broken alloy & cf components… bags of old kit made out of polypropylene & nylon… yes, way less than a car or airplane, but I do sometimes feel like an environmental catastrophe with this hobby. BTW, those bibs look nice. I’ll probably buy a pair, use them until I destroy them, then landfill them for eternity.

    This was interesting... same goes with bikes and componants. There's a handful of companies that actually make their own bikes, wheels, bars etc, Factor being one of them. I hardly ever pay full price for anything these days, because a lot of kit is massively over-priced for what it is

    Nice views from Ed, but I don't agree on the chamois cream topic. My big undercarriage needs it, it's awful if I forget to put cream for rides over an hour. Maybe it's true for lean people, but as often, wide (ok, fat) people are not seen as standard customers for cycling kits brands. Friction is there and no bib can follow every bit of my skin. Finding a kit my size is very difficult - even a 3XL jersey doesn't pass my elbows, is too tight on my upper arms and often leaves my lower back uncovered. All the best für Kostüme 🙂

      @JakeMay I should of added that you can join the Wandle, or as I sometimes call it, 'The Withywindle', being a Tolkien nut, the books that is, not the films, on the Thames, but some of the river from Wandsworth is underground, so you have to go on the road a bit untill you get near Plough Lane in Wandsworth or Merton?

    Love these videos an def made us want to get to Norfolk on our own bikes. Quick question : why don’t you use old style panniers with the weight low rather than having it all up top? Does it make for tiring steering?

    • @JakeMay
      @JakeMay Před 24 dny

      Glad to hear you're enjoying and yes highly recommend Norfolk! Combination of factors - that bikepacking bags are universal (not needing mounting points) so can go on any bike, are lighter, don't take up as much width so easier to transport on trains / through narrow gaps - all comes down to personal preference though ultimately!

  • @jeremymenage1566
    @jeremymenage1566 Před 25 dny

    Cycle lanes often cross side roads, but the give way signs and road markings are where the side road meets the main road, not where it meets the cyvle lane. So, in effect, it is the cyclist who has to give way. If you cycle on the road the driver has to give way.

    • @JakeMay
      @JakeMay Před 24 dny

      Agree, the stop start nature of bike lanes passing through road junctions is incredibly frustrating and also physically tiring!
