  • ***REVIEW*** Seat feels better but it does heat up and stay warm after sitting in the sun. I cover it with a mesh seat cover in the summer which borders on being magical. I bought it here, but have no affiliation with the seller, its just to give you an idea: www.amazon.com...
I installed a gel seat for my KLR650 on my lunch break. Its a 5"-7"x16" gel pad sold on ebay, I bought this one for $47.50. If this guy can do it, so can you!
    Tips:
    -Don't confuse a stapler with a screwdriver.
    -Get all your gear staged.
    -3m spray adhesive is sticky!
-Heat your seat cover in the sun or dryer to make it easier to work with.
-Cut, don't tear out the cubes if you want a neater finish.
-Staple one end of the cover, stretch front/back staple, stretch side/side and staple.
-Don't stress it too much, this mod is the most visible to your butt.
I will make a video review once I get several back to back days riding in on it.

I used this technique on Goldwing seat, worked great, took a 3400 mile ride the following week. Works with a seat heater too. Thanks so much. Used an air stapler.

One of the best seat modification video's. I'm going to try the same thing but use crocodile leather for the finish.

there is a easy way to get the foam of your seat, you need a table spoon try to straighten one side of the spoon just a little bit and then sharpen the side you straightened of the spoon and there you are you have a handy tool to scrape of the foam evenly and it is more useful than a Stanley knife and one more thing when you a using a spray glue or any other stuff try to spray it on both surfaces this will stick and bond together much better and it will last longer

It feels better than the foam seat, but the gel does get hot in the sun and stay hot for much longer than a foam only seat. When I recover the seat I will throw on another layer of smoothing foam to insulate it better. Otherwise I drape my jacket towel or just my microfiber cloth over the seat if I'll be off for awhile. ;)

Great idea! How's it feel? I'm contemplating doing some modding to my stock seat also.

What type of stapler are you using? I was under the impression that I needed a heavier duty stapler.

since i am living in a very hot country I am a bit scared the gel will get too hot.... has anyone tried it yet in heat?
I often do tours about 600-1000km (400-700miles) per day on a CRF250 so it really important for me to know for longer trips

+PhuketBungalow Info The gel does get hot, not really bad except if its over 100 degrees and parked in the sun; then it gets pretty hot.

I recently got a 3d mesh seat cover from amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LGKJJRI/?ie=UTF8&psc=1 But I can't speak on behalf of the seller, they're chinese made and may have quality control issues, but for the price its a life saver and it works so well I have to remove it on early morning rides or it feels like sitting on an air conditioner.

Ebay is where I bought it from, comes in a kit form. Just measure your seat and buy one that is approximately the size you need.

    What glue did you use?

    • @GunGuyGallagher
      @GunGuyGallagher  Před 7 lety +1

Dmitry Serbin I used 3m all purpose adhesive, it's just a spray can. You can get it at most hardware or automotive stores. Auto places sell "headliner" glue too, which can withstand higher temps if you live someplace hot.

It's not elegant but it works. Cant tell it from a stock seat after it got a few hours of ride time on it. Better than paying 3 times more for some "custom" shop to do it ;)

It works fine and has for years, looks great still. But I'm sure you are probably some expert butt-pad guy, so good luck with that. DIY is a viable option.
