- If you have a furnace not working, I can help you figure what is going on with it. By using the sequence of operation will help you figure out why your furnace is blowing cold air. Troubleshooting a furnace can be done by systematically going through the furnace sequence of events, from start to finish. If a gas furnace in your home that is not heating up is the problem then this is the hvac training video for you!
Today I wanted to go over the way a gas furnace works. I want to talk about the sequence of events that needs to happen for the furnace to start blowing warm air into your house.
We’ll start at the thermostat and go all the way to the blower turning on forcing air into the rooms of your house.
First, we'll I'll tell you about how the thermostat calls for heat and sends the signal to the furnace.
Next up, the inducer motor comes on and evacuates the heat exchanger tubes from and stale gasses and air.
Then we talk about the pressure switch that verifies the inducer motor is working properly.
Once that happens, the ignition sequence begins. The hot surface ignitor glows, the gas valve opens. The flame starts, and the flame sensor recognizes that.
When the control board realizes the sequence of operation has begun correctly, the blower will turn on and begin blowing the warm air into the house.
***************************************************************************************************
I want to give fair warning to anyone watching this that is not already an experienced technician in the HVAC industry. This video is for educational purposes only. Fox Family Heating and Air does not recommend anyone other than a professional to start opening the furnace up and trying to diagnose the failure going on with your system.
There are high and low voltages that can shock a person. There are also lots of moving parts that can damage body parts. Namely hands and fingers. The furnace also produces hot surfaces within the furnace compartments and around the housing which can cause severe burns. There is an actual flame that is produced by the ignition and startup of a gas furnace which can cause severe burns and damage to person or property.

The Easy Guide to Gas Furnace Troubleshooting and the Sequence of Operation is the Simplest Way To Describe How The Furnace Works So You Can Troubleshoot Your Gas Furnace Startup.
I've learned a lot watching your videos. 4 months in the field
I´m thousand miles away. A great thanks for educational you provided. At least now i can understand how things works and relations betwen each part.
Even if thermostat will tell what´s wrong, a quick check will be helpful. For sure heating system will fail in worst weather, when technican would prefer to stay safe in its warm home than to drive in crazy weather to a customer´s house.
Thanks for all and be safe.
Thank you so much taking time to make information videos. It’s amazing how you are explaining each component and how they work.
Thanks 🙏
Your communication skills are excellent, if I had to call someone to fix my furnace, I would hope they are as well versed in this field as you my friend. Thank you for all your knowledge you share.
Sweet video to save for future info. Nice explanation in laymans terms
Home owner here. Your troubleshooting steps just saved me a few hundred dollars and a call to a tech on a Saturday. Thanks
Awesome!
This is great information! I just finished trade school in this field and I find this trade to be amazing and want to keep learning to be a Journeyman soon, all that's left is to find someone who will hire a new graduate so I can learn the trade.
Very good, well presented, informational video. Thank you very much sir
Good morning brother . Happy holidays to you and fox family. I've been in the hvac field for 5 years im a lead installer. I still struggle with service when it comes to start up sometimes. So your videos help alot. Keep them coming.
Oh that's great to hear. More troubleshooting videos coming soon.
great video, I just found your channel and I'm learning more with you than I am at school. Thank you!
Happy Thanksgiving and great video as usual.
Very informative. Found this while searching for “why does my HVAC system smell like burning plastic”.
Love the video . So helpful
Awesome work
Great video. I enjoyed it
Great video
THANK YOU
What about roll outs?
I have a Question my gas furnace is also my air conditioner the main unite for the Ac is outside , why will not my furnace shut off the blower motor in the house comes down to the temperature is set at the thermostat ? I’ve had the thermostat replaced I’ve put new batteries in the thermostat multiple times .
I have induction motor on, ignitor zapping, and no gas. voltage on red wire to the gas valve is 10 volts constant with voltage going crazy as ignitor does its thing. wires seem clear of cuts and abrasions. my only thought is a bad circuit board.
My gas furnace worked fine last week. Now it's throwing an ignition failure code. It's not clogged with a spiderweb like last fall lol. It goes through the process. Heats up the ignitor then shuts off after a few seconds. No flame at all. Does that a few times then throws the code.
Gas valve used your manometer and check for 24v
👍🏼
I knew a guy who would say, “When in doing jump it out.” High limit the problem? Better put 911 on speed dial
