It won't ruin the cork since it is plant based. If it is submerged for a long time, then it might expand and harm the cork. For something as simple as this, it will be fine. Using cork grease also helps to make the cork resistant to water.
@@illuviaazul8749 Trust me. I have worked on instruments for years. Cork is plant-based material. Water is what plants absorb. The moisture from your mouthpiece and airstream doesn't make your cork fall off, right? So water will not harm your cork.

@@pianoman2021 I don't advocate for mouthpiece brushes because most people leave them in the mouthpiece and it can't dry. Also, brushes can scratch the mouthpiece. You are better off just swabbing the mouthpiece. I’m a beginner and just recently got my saxophone. My neck had this dark green stuff in it when I got it, so I went to a music store and they said I should use dishwashing soap to clean it out. Would that be a good idea?
If you take off the octave key like I showed you in this video, and you make sure that no soap is left in it, you should be fine. Once it is clean, if you keep swabbing it after every time you play, you won't need to do this again. The green residue on the inside is there because people didn't swab it out after playing.
It's something that is very common. It just isn't great long term. Heck, some people even boil their mouthpieces. Never do either of these things! Unless you want playing the saxophone to be way more expensive than it already is haha.
Swab it out every time you play. The other stuff only needs to be done once in a blue moon if you always keep it clean 👍 I would say to do the extra treatment when you think it is time to do it.
Brass will not rust when touching water. Steel will. That is why I advocate removing the steel rods from the neck. Some people even take their saxophone apart completely and take it to a bath tub. Most corrosion on the brass is from the condensation from playing the instrument. That is why we swab :) feel free to keep asking questions!
I don't recommend it to anyone. Cold water, and if you really need to, use soap. Anything acidic and break down the Mouthpiece. Just swab out after playing, and you should be fine. Run cold water.
