Shogun: Anjin-San Saves Lord Yoshi Toranaga From Death In A Massive Earthquake In Yedo, Japan

- Shogun: Anjin-San (Richard Chamberlain) saves Lord Yoshi Toranaga’s (Toshiro Mifune) life once again, as an earthquake erupts during their conversation, translated by The Lady Toda Mariko (Yoko Shimada) about preparing Anjin-San’s Dutch Warship, The Erasmus, for war. Lord Toranaga falls into one of the earthquake ditches, and Anjin-San pulls him out, and hands Lord Toranaga his Samurai Katana Sword. Lord Toranaga smiles.
Shogun, The Millions-Of-Copies Sold Novel, was written by James Clavell. I remember this scene from the first time I watched the series. Toshiro Mifune was the man and Yoko Shimada embodied elegance, intelligence, and common sense.
He learned quickly. A samurai without his sword is naked. Toronaga was extremely grateful for Anjin’s gift of honour
Yoko Shimada is such a classy lady
"A samurai should not be without his swords". Blackthorne said sometinhg like that as he handed his own katana for Toranaga - in the book - if I'm not mistaken. I missed that line in this scene.
Unlike the reboot, this shows how deep the bond between blackthorn and toranaga had become.
Not a bad set piece for a made-for-TV movie with no CGI

I was 9 years old when this aired on TV; for some reason I could always remember this scene ( we had babysitters that night and I got to stay up and watch. 25 years later I finally read the book and immediately searched out the DVD's of the series. I had no idea there were on subtitles or dubbing for all the Japanese but having just read the book it made no difference .
Came here after watching the corresponding scene in the new Shogun series 😊

This scene was so memorable as a kid, scary but also a little silly (the way he gets “stuck” face down seemed a little forced) …then I went to college, took a class on earthquakes, and realized how ridiculous this portrayal was (no one ever falls into cracks) - but it was one scene and moved the plot.
I’ll be first to make a comment on this. When you look at the top of Blackthorn, his shirt has the symbol of what we have as a Wi-Fi symbol.
