Rupes Bigfoot Polisher vs Griots DA Polisher

- This is a quick and "broad" discussion about the evolution of polishing machines with a focus on the Griots DA and new Rupes Bigfoot. (there are many other polishers I've left out of this discussion for the time being) I think it important to understand the progression of paint restoration as it applies to the detailing community. It's very exciting to watch our industry grow rapidly and see the expansion of tools that combine the necessary power (in terms of correction) with fundamental simplicity (meaning anyone can use it safely). Can't wait to see whats next! -L

Larry, thanks for the great review, I just bought the Griots DA polisher and now I know to take the extra time for the best job. Your channel has been a fantastically helpful.
Cool. Thx. I can always count on you to listen to every detail. Hope the video was valuable despite my mistake.
Thanks for taking and sharing your time, all you videos come across to me very sincere while not be self indulgent. I can tell you like why you do both detailing and taking us along with you!
I have a Porter Cable that I purchased from Groit's before they branded their own in 1999. Its still going strong
This was a rupes 21. Thx for watching
I found out about Griots Garage when I got a detailing kit for Christmas, and felt no one knew about their products and they were kind of unheard of. But after watching a bunch of your videos where you mention their products it makes me so more confident in the products I have to use!
Thanks for the great video. Just purchased a Rupes, so your video is helpful. The presentation style you use is also great.
no...mixed thoughts on that. I might. Not sure. Still playing and testing
I knew someone was going to ask that! I think those are probably neck and neck...pretty close. The Flex is "forced-rotation" while the Rupes isn't.
Awesome explanation. Thanks so much! I'm picking up the Griot's as the Rupes is out of my price range.
Great video Larry... Amazing information as always!!
I've been watching your work very close lately and I got to be honest with you... you are really good doing this!! Every time I'm here, I learn something new!
I've started my own detailing company here in Los Angeles 16months ago, and being a car crazy person like I'm... I'm having a really good time taking care of exotic cars that I've only see on TV! Pretty amazing!
Keep it up with the amazing job man!! =) You rock!
Hygo Leal
Completely agree with your closing statement. For someone in the trade it would pay itself off time and time again. For an average person at home who does it as a passion, it would be very hard to warrant spending the extra money. Great video as always.
I did it on mine, it works great. Crazy how much of a beast this machine is
Thx. This was a comparison video? Not sure how I could have worked him into a comparison video. I guess I will say his name next time. (Honestly, I had no idea he was the inventor of the Rupes. Pretty cool)
Havent heard of them...doesnt mean they are bad. I'm sure they are great, but honestly I've never spoken with them. -L
You should redo this video with the new Griots g21 vs the Rupes LHR21 mark 2! I think that would be a pretty informational video as it's getting harder and harder for the expanding detailer to know which machine would benefit them best! Thanks
2nd that. I am currently in the market for a polisher and the Griots is very high on my list. Re-visiting this topic will be real helpful Larry as both companies have brought out updated products.
Rob Silva If it helps you any, I ended up purchasing a Zentool ZEN-21E. It's practically a Rupes LHR21, but with a washer mod and a couple other things from factory. I'm very happy with it so far!
results would be about the same... the difference would be in the "feel" and preference.
try it with a kamikaze plate!
The G21 is AMAZING! G21 has my vote, the feel, and the lifetime warranty vs rupes 1 year. Just saying..,
I purchased Griots DA. Works great!!!
YouSoundButtHurt if it works. It works
I think it is called "random orbital" (the driver is allowed to rotate as it oscillates) vs "orbital" (the driver is kept from rotating while it oscillates) like a square oscillating sander. Either way your right, the rupes has the largest orbital offset.
Man i enjoy watching your vids, Its good to see someone so passionate about there job.
My dad used Rupes back in the 70's in the paint shop.
Great video Larry! (as always) I would love to see you make a video on correcting single stage paint?
hey larry i tried you clay and scraper and glass clean trick on the front wind sheild wow nice cleaned a lot of junk of the glass with cleaning the wiper blades also slick tip thanks
Either remove the badge or tape them up and work around them
They were both close...just took longer
Rupes ‘ROO-pez’, Griot’s ‘GREE-ohz’
lol, this confused me too, like did I click on the wrong video?
I have been trying to decide which one to buy next, i presently use a torq 22 ,used a bigfoot that belongs to a co-worker, seen the grios. There a lot of good machines on the market
Thx bud!
Thx bud
Where do I find that magnifier
Oh boy, dont get me in trouble with the professor
im one of the people who requested a video like this. it's awesome that you listen to your fans. Especially for some one like me who would like to open his own detailing shop someday. Keep up the great work!!!
Solvent based cleaner

Thx for the video. How is a random Orbital polisher different to a random Orbital wood sander. Obviously bypassing the fact that one uses sand paper and another uses a pad. Assuming a pad can attach properly using the hook and loop system can I use my woodworking random Orbital?
THANKS DUDE! I got a kit a few days ago and was planning to restore my lights on Saturday, but the weather says it's going to rain... I'll probably just wait for your video :)
Love my Griots
Hey Larry, id like to start out by saying thank you. Your videos have helped me greatly in buffing correctly and applying appropriate pressure. My question is; what is the magnifier that you used to show the paint on this video?
how would you go about when using the griots DA and certain scratches wont come out please advise i used the griots DA with the meguiars microfiber pad and the menzerna your using but i got like a couple scratches that arent coming out should i use a different pad or different rountine?
thinking of getting a rupes myself. my da machine is missing some power and I can't remove some scratches or deeper marks that I know are removeable...
Amazing videos, I've watched them all and they are a great help.
*Do you have any tips regarding scratch removal from interior plastic such as the trunk guard or door panels? I was thinking of sanding and then polishing.
Hopefully a future video on the different types of pads and polishes for beginners will be filmed
I noticed you never polished the tail light with the first machine but did in the last device.
Because it's a rotary
Hmm...I didnt feel enough difference to make a definitive comment, but be tuned to that the next time I use it
Great vid as always! :)
So I got a little question, with the Rupes having more throw to it than the other dual action polishers, is it as safe? or does the rupes become abit more unsafe than the dual action because it has more throw and "bite"?
Thanks in advance!
the action is called Planetary and the rupes has the biggest Orbit thus being faster works for sanding and polishing
Thanks for the review. I would also like to see you do a comparison of the Rupes and the Torq 10fx.
Would the griots Da or Porter Cable be strong enough or powerful enough to get through the modern paint or hard paint. Im not sure if for each manufacture if the paint is harder or softer but lets say on Land Rovers and Mercedes would the Griots Da and or Porter Cable be powerful enough. Then which would be better to remove heavy swirl marks and for polishing? Thank You for you time.
What its the best way buffing around and between emblems?
Larry could you do a video on, claying, polishing and sealing glass?
Excellent video! Keep them coming.
Larry, can you shoot a video on cleaning fabric interiors, carpet/seat cleaning and protection and possibly some stain removal? That would be great!
I am new to car detailing. I am planning to buy a da polisher for my own car. Help me in deciding to go for 8mm or 15mm throw polisher?
Hey Larry, I have a Flex 3401 and I am a beginner weekend detailer. I am having a little bit of trouble getting the correct pressure applied to the paint. How hard should I be applying the polisher? Also I have been using the foam pads that were included in the kit (from detailersdomain), what would be the difference between them and microfiber cutting pads in terms of performance. Thanks and keep up the videos
Great videos.
Btw what state are you from. Its there a lot of mobile detailing competition where you from.
Thinking moving out of cali. Since everything its so expensive, and lots of mobile detailing competition here...
My rupes poilsher cant maintain constent speed, wat part u think i need to replace, ive already checkdd the brush
Larry why you dont mention the Flex 3401? any feed back about the Flex 3401 Vs. the Rupes, sure would like to know your opinion.
This is my question too, i am considering between Flex 3401 VRG & Rupes LHR21ES
How do you feel about the 3 generation griots polisher?
thank you for this vidéo. What about the difference between the Rupes and the Flex XC 3401 ?? the size of the eccentric is different. And what il your item to show the default on a screen ? paint gauge ? witch make ? thank you from French detailer ;-)
I am just an enthusiast looking for a new polisher. is it safe to use LHR 21 Mark II with both 150mm and the 125mm back plate? If so, can you recommend a dealer? I live in California, usa.
Would love to get my hands on a Rupes Bigfoot, but for me it is to expensive for now. Rolling with a DAP 900 V3 atm. Hopefully, next year . . .
Festool looks awesome! Nice rupes also.
To make the focus better when its up close I would get a macro lens. The minimum focus distance is much shorter with those.
great job Larry!
I heard that also. He meant 7 amps. The griots is rated about 1.1 hp
7 amps X 120 Volts = 840 Watts
Like the vid. Do you think the scratches were close on each side? I could see there could be a little more time to spend on a deeper scratch. For the normal person are polishers worth the money, or would it be better to take it to someone when you do have a large area to fix. Thanks
You got it bud
Love the videos !! How would I get dried gum off my paint. Sister drove over a piece of gum and it slung it onto my sideskirt :(
Great videos, keep up the great work. Have you used the Flex 3401 VRG, if so how does it compare to the Rupes? Does the flex save as much time as the Rupes.
I'd like to see a comparison between the rupes and the direct drive da from flex. Can't decide! Opinions?
How do you get excess polish off the car emblems and such?
What's the website where you buy the double action buffer ? Thanks
Have you ever used the Nano skin polisher? I wonder if its any good.
$140 VS $400
Honestly, I'm going with the DA.
I can spend a little extra time with a DA and get the same results.\
Good video though.
***** I went with the $120 one from griots garage and I'm super happy with it.
$70 HF DA works just as well... had mine for over 5 years without an issue.
Rupes is the daddy....pull out your dollars or pounds you sissys
The Harbor Freight DA is not in the same league as far as true defect removal capabilities.. I can speak from countless hours of detailing with it. Put a 3" plate and pad on it and compound a small area, and that is what a high end polisher is capable of with large pads, and it will do it quicker, with less heat, needing a much slower speed with less sling, and much less vibration. The cheaper units don't have the low end torque to completely remove more than light defects efficiently. With an extension it makes a great 3" buffer though.
No brainer even today. The DA actually in my opinion is better. It's much cheaper and I'm a bit puzzled I can do any car in about the same amount of time as the over priced one.
are you using the original 6" on the griot's DA or a 5" ??? why use 5" vs 6"
Excellent comparison, Larry. Do you know if the the Rupes polisher compares pretty closesly to the Flex 3401?
hey love your videos must be great i've never seen you do a regular car as a detailer meaning ford or Toyota lol i wouldn't either if it was that or a rolls royce keep em coming!!!
Hi Larry, Thanks for the awesome educational videos. What are your thoughts on the Flex xc3401? would u say that its similar to the rupes? Thank you.
I was just giving a gift from a friend it's Chemical Guys torq and i tried it out and it kept on stopping with no pressure so I was told to get rupes 21 is this good for a starter detailer
How much pressure do you put it on the polisher? great video
Great video as always Larry. I just bought a Griots 6inch DA of ebay to detail my car. I was wondering what accessories I should buy for it. I'll probably buy microfiber cutting pads and Menzerna FG400 and seal it with your AMMO Skin or Sonax Nano. Obviously clay bar before hand. Anything else you would recommend?
the orange machine has 7hp? how do you work that out?
do touch less automatic car washes scratch your car? Its winter where I live and I don't have a heated garage or running water to access during the winter
Question! Are Clay bars and Modelling clay created equal. I have some extra mod clay laying around am wondering if it can be used on my golf r?
Hi Larry what are your thoughts on the FLex 3401? Please let me know as I am debating on the rupes 21 or flex 3401. Thanks
Are both of the pads used between the two machines the same size? 7.5" maybe?
Thanks for the great video.
Larry, sorry if I missed this, but was this the Rupes 15 or 21? Also, which size backing plates and pads were used on both the Griot's and the Rupes?
Trying to decide between the 15 and 21 right now. Leaning towards 21 w/ 5'' backing plate.
Great vid, thanks Larry!
During your Griot's inspection (8:23 to be exact) this made me want to request a possible topic for a future video...I'd love to see your techniques on emblem areas. At the time mentioned, the "P" has heavy amount of grime around and inside the loop. What advice can you share the CZcamsrs?!
Thanks, Larry. Question though, when do you say that a polishing pad is worth throwing away and replacing? How do you wash them and reuse them?
hi larry, great info, thanks, just bought my first DA, its onnly a cheaper kestrel das6 but i got to start somewhere. one thing i wondering was, how do you manage machine polishing around the badges!
How do you get the roof of SUVs done?
Hey larry i was wondering what are thoughts on the Meguiars Dual action Polisher G110v2, 6 speed, thinks its a good buy?
thanks
I love my Flex3401 and Cyclo both amazing machines never tried Rupes but looks like a good machine ??
hey larry im looking to get a 15ES rupes polisher. Can you let me know if I need to buy a separate 5" back plate to use microfiber polishing pads?
Also have you tried using Pinnacle Safe Scrub Bug & Tar Pad to clean your microfiber polishing pads on the fly? If so, can you please let me a preferred way? I have ripped a few foam pads with a rough brush before.. a bit paranoid.. thanks!
As a first time purchase of a polisher, should I get the Rupes directly or should I get the Porter Cable 7424xp? I don't mind spending the extra dollars, I just don't want to have to upgrade to the Rupes in 1-2 years and have the Porter Cable sitting in my garage and going to waste. Also, I will use the polisher 2-3 times a year.
Ok so what do you think about the flex da polisher
should i get thePC or Groits.. im stuck.
I went on their website and only found a random orbital. Is that the same thing as the dual action polisher!? Lol I m so confused!
Help!
It depends. If it says, "Polishing and random orbital" in the title, then yes, it's considered a "dual action", but worded differently. You should also watch videos on the particular model you're looking at to see how much it spins.
Larry, have you tried the Rupes Microfiber Color Coded Pads with the vent holes in the pad yet? I was just curious. I wasn't sure if you made this video prior to those pads even coming out. I thought they were fairly new. Also, have you tried any of the Rupes compounds, polishes, or sealants yet? I know you have your own incredible product line, but was just curious if you have tested any of the Rupes Chemicals in addition to their Microfiber Pads and their original foam pads? Rupes does make it fairly easy for the hobbyist detailer like myself using their color coding system (Blue cap use blue pad, green cap use green pad, etc) The color coded caps/pads does make it fairly easy for the home user that doesn't detail as a profession. I wish more companies did the same thing because it takes a lot of the guesswork out of it for home enthusiast like myself. I do realize there are literally THOUSANDS of combinations of products that professionals use and that you always do "test spots" and use "test products" for your detail jobs due to so many paint hardness and thickness parameters, detailers like yourself could never just stick with a color coded system, but for what I go after (not exactly perfection) but a really great quality shine and removal of most paint defects, the color coded system seems like a really good idea.
I use the blue Rupes microfiber cutting pads with m105 on a 7424xp, speed 5. Very effective at removing 1000 grit sanding marks. Seasoning those pads can be tricky, but we'll worth the effort.
