Thank you for watching! I'm really happy you enjoyed it and I hope you like the lens as much as I do!
This video is awesome! I really like the comparison you did with 100-400 GM. Subscribed!

Thank you so much 🙂
Great review. Thanks for taking the time to put it together.
Thanks for watching Wes! I hope it was helpful!
@@ShaneBethlehem Hi Shane, I bought the lens partially based on your review, but can I ask: Is there some play on the manual focusing ring with your 70-200 GM ? Mine turns, then after 1/4 of a turn seems to catch or engage something with a sight knock. It seems to work, I just wondered if this was normal ? (I bought from HK so can't really ask the shop!)
I really like the way you talk Shane! And the insights is great. Good work. I have been thinking about getting this lens for quite sometime now, but now really make up my mind, now you almost convince me!
Thank you very much! I still love using this lens more overtime, I still wish it was smaller but the image quality that I get out of it has been consistently amazing
I live in Grimsby, I am loving your shots, and love seeing some shots in places I have been myself. Keep up the good work man!! Cheers
Eh nice! I'm in Hamilton! Thanks though, I hope you have a fantastic new year
Thanks for the comparison with 100-400, and the F4! Super insightful, subbed!
no problem, thank you for watching!
Great info and warmth in your words. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you!
I've watched at least six other reviews on the Sony 70-200 2.8, and this one was BY FAR the most helpful in technical review and in comparison with other long glass options. Thank you so much!
Thank you Libby! When I was shopping for this lens I had a little bit of a hard time finding videos I really looked at all the aspects of the lens, so it was one of the reasons why I got into making lens reviews
Thank you so much for watching the video though I hope you have an awesome day!
Im subbing, great video, im sure your subscriber will go up exponentially soon! All the best.
Thanks for the sub 😊 I hope to gain some traction some day, making the videos is just fun too though at least
Awesome explanation. It’s really very great information you have shared with everyone. Thanks for your effort..👌
Thank you, I'm happy it helped!
Great review, you earned a sub mate!
Thank you!
Dude, you're making great stuff here. Keep it up
Thanks man!
great video+explanation mate!
Thanks 😊
Just looking at switching into the Sony world from Canon. Thanks for the awesome review! Love what you said about "Everyone shoots their own photography differently and their is no reason to fall into what other people do." Subscribed and looking forward to checking more of your content out.
Welcome to the Sony club! I made the same transition a lil over two years ago, it can be a lil tough at the start but it's awesome once you get used too it, the auto focus so so nice
Great review, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
love the very detailed video. thx man
Thank you :)
nice video shane was good info
Great video... with GREAT information!!! Keep doing you!!!
Thank you very much 😊
Great, in-depth clip! I also did an extensive amount of research on the f/4 and f/2.8. For upcoming projects, the f/2.8 will suit best.
Thank you! The f2.8 is just a lovely lens, it has held up surprisingly well compared to the new designs that other brands have been releasing even
Great video and information. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
I was wondering what lens you were using while talking to the camera. Amazing review, and thanks for the reply!
I think I was using the sony 35mm f1.4, I use it for most of my videos or the Tamron 28-75 f2.8.
Thank you also :)
Great video Shane! Love your photos! Went ahead an subscribed. For someone that shoots mostly portraits, curious about your opinion between the 70-200gm vs 135 1.8 GM?
Sorry for the slow reply, thank you for watching and for the sub. Those two lenses are kind of different beasts, 75% of the time I would opt for the 70-200 just because I will be stopping down for telephoto portraits anyways and optically both lenses are superb. The 135 though is going to get shots impossible with many lenses and can get a unique look, its a much more niche lens though that excels in its own class and I wish I owned one but its just not practical for my usual work
I love honest opinion...thanks as I've been struggling with the very subject you've addressed...just a hobby for me but have slowly graduated from Nikon to Sony and all that entails so your review hits the mark..from Greensville..d
Heyo Dave I'm happy I was able to help! I really appreciate getting feedback like this, its super motivating to know that I am doing what I set out to when I started this channel still 😊 all the best I hope you have a fantastic weekend!
Hi Shane. You're doing great job. Really. Im wondering to buy A7 R III but can You help me and answer - Is that body is good for repo like weddings and other dynamic events? Thx in advance.
Really helpful video, thanks :)
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching :)
Great information !!
Thanks you for watching 😊
Thank you so much Shane!
Thank you for watching!
Awesome vid man! Would love to have this but it is way too expensive so I went for the F4. Keep pushing man!
Thanks, been working on the video for months, so nice to finally finish it 😅 yea I feel obligated to use it as much as I can cause of the price
You two should collab. Shane knocked this video out the park and peter your channel is blossoming and becoming voluptuous. Idk haha. Fr you two are awesome and teach me stuff all the time while I drool over gear. If you guys want good music I got you guys. It’s all under my label I’ll give you paperwork if you like to keep your bases covered 💯 mad props to you guys for helping other content creators!! Keep cranking out quality content and get that check my fellow you tubers 😎 ~Sully
You did good as the one stop of light less for $1000 less, makes more sense, especially because the 2.8 DOF is razor thin.
Greaaaaat video! Thank you!
Love the shot of the fish
Thanks 😊 it was at the Toronto zoo
Great review
Last Thursday I received this lens. After some experimentation with the camera settings, the results are fantastic. The lens is heavy, but the images are extremely sharp.
Thats super exciting! I hope the first week has been fun, it certainly is heavy to lug around but some of the shots it produces make it so so worth it!
Do you find that the autofocus is a bit of grinding noise during video?
Been going back and forth between this and the 100-400. Thanks for the great vid!
Thanks! I know eh, and now there is the 200-600 in the mix 😅
I had the same dilemma, but ultimately decided on the 70-200 2.8 for low light situations.
2:45 thanks for showing 70mm mark. I just bought this lens and I notice that dash marker is not centered with "70mm" i thought something wrong with me lens :D but yours is same.
Thanks for vid. The Nikkor equivalent was one of my go to favourites. I switched to Sony 15 months ago for many reasons ( including smaller/ lighter) but was dismayed to see no size or weight saving with this optic (it cost more too). Ended up pairing the smaller f4 with an a7r3 body and adding some primes like 85mm f1.8 for compact and lower light use. Thus 2 optics for less weight and cost. As I evolved into Sony I upgraded to a7r4 plus an a9 and have multiple other primes: 24m f1.4, 35mm f1.8 and 55mm 1.8. Also zooms for convenience / reach: 16-35mm f4, 24-105 f4 and 200-600 f5.6-6.3.
I'm a generalist amateur shooter who suffers from GAS. I'm tempted by a 90mm macro and a 135 f1.8 prime too, but already at point where I can't carry all my kit so have to cherry pick for each assignment or situation.
Seeing your vid makes me wonder if I should sell my initial 70-200 f4 and switch to the GM f2.8 (hate size, weight and cost, but love weather sealing and performance). I also love travelling, so really appreciate my 70-200 f4 which for many situations is arguably a better choice. Another thought is buy both then eventually sell the one that doesn't get used in practice.
In some ways I wish I hadn't seen your vid and confident endorsement of the GM f2.8 because I think I could love it too! It's just so damn profligate to even consider when I already have a superb set of glass. As I write and reflect, I'm thinking NO .... stay with f4 for zooms and use small primes whenever possible for low light situations and lightweight convenience. Maybe I should rent a f2.8 on both 16-35mm and 70-200mm just to convince myself that f4 represents the 'sweet spot' for zooms, when augmented by fast primes, and that so called 'holy trinity' glass isn't the optimum for me? I can usually take my time, use a tripod, don't need to please any clients and pick the right glass for what I want to achieve.
My goodness that kit makes me quite envious, I would like an a7riv for the larger grip so badly, but I've been saving and waiting for the a7siii for so long now 😞
I totally know what you mean about the larger size of the G master being so inhibitive, and by the sounds of things I don't think you really would love it that much, it's awesome for the sharpness in the low light, but really most of the time I'm always putting it on a tripod when I'm travelling, and realistically it doesn't make too too big of a diff, the only real situation that it really performs past the f4 is for wildlife just because you can get faster shutter speeds
I'm really interested in seeing what Tamron and comes out with too, are the 28-75 it's so sharp for its weight, the 70-180 they're making maybe a really compelling option as well, but I'm skeptical that it will be sharp enough for the a7riv
Hi Shane, I somehow chanced upon your narrative on Sony lenses, I must state herein that it is fantastic indeed, I have a few Qs:
Q1: Can the Sony 70-200 GM be used as a Studio 'Headshot-Portrait' Lens ?
Q2: Can 'Headshot-Portrait' be captured by setting the focal lengths to 85mm - 100 mm -135mm - 150mm ?
or
Q3: Is it mandatory to possess the lenses with fixed focal lengths ?
please advice
It is great for head shots, but you'll just need a large ammount of space. The biggest drawback will be that because it is such a large expensive lens you will have a little bit harder of a time if you're in a studio space then a comprable prime lens.
I'm personally biased towards the 85 mm focal length for headshots, but realistically all of them are fantastic for portraits and there is no real rule that one is better than another.
It's not at all mandatory to possess any prime lenses, I recommend them usually because there are better price to performance ratio when you're starting up, but realistically any more telephoto lens is able to get nice compression that will make portrait photos look a little bit more pleasing whether that be is zoom or prime. The biggest defining factor will be the minimum aperture and the look you're going for, if you have a f1.8 lens you're often going to get a little bit better performance out of it in low light and as well as when you stop it down it's often the sharper lens, so for that reason prime lenses are generally better for portrait photography.
Use this on my a-mount a77. Great combo.
Could you please send your recommendation regarding 80mm e mount lens. Thank you
I am quite partial to the Sony 85mm f1.8 lens , its the first e-mount lens I purchased and it's been consistently the best performing lens I have, I made a review on it as well if you'd like to hear more 😊
would this be a good lens in 2021? i have an a7iii and i am part of a group that cosplays. Because of this, i will be at anime care meets, cosplay photoshoots at random locations indoor and outdoor, and conventions including panels and the concerts that are hosted by the convention. I also have a comedy club wanting to hire me that's fairly small. i feel like this would be perfect but im not sure if im blinded by the "this is the best and i must have it" mentality.
Can you tell pleae whith what Lens you fimed this video?
Thank you in advance.
The Sony 35mm f1.4
Classic, mate. Still have my last kidney on eBay, so hopefully will be able to buy the GM soon.
So how do I view my video footage on my pc ? Can’t view them because of the codec I guess! I can’t find anyone who can help me with this problem. Just bought an A7iii. Do I need a paid version of premier pro? Ty
I've never encountered an issue with playing the footage unfortunately and I don't recall downloading any codecs for the video, the raw photos do require some though. Are you using a updated Windows machine? I tried all the software I have on my computer, the photos app, the windows video player, VLC and all of them play it 🤔
Though if you have a one-week trial of premiere pro it should be the most updated version too which should be able to also play it
@@ShaneBethlehem so I got a free verse of premier pro about 6 months ago but I have never updated it , would that fix it ?
Also I’m not really sure how to update windows as I’m not great with computers ?
The TC14 is good, and if you pair them with an a6000 or crop mode on your riii it is pretty good with a FE 416mm focal length with a fixed f6.3. I bet this pair on an a6400 would be awesome.
Shane, great review and very high production value. I have both the 70-200GM and the 85 1.8 and I have the same take aways that you do. The GM is a great lens but before any shoot I always stop and think if I'll can get the job done with just the 85 to cut down on the weight and its just more pleasant shooting with a lighter lens. But when you do need the GM it is amazing and very flexible and I'd say it has better colors and micro contrast to the 85 1.8
Thank you :) You couldn't be more right about the micro contrast, I regret not highlighting that in this video more. I just when for a large hike this week and took the GM with and it's just amazing how well it can handle harsh lighting situations with such ease, it makes the editing process a cake walk too
@@ShaneBethlehem yeah come to think of it I really can't remember any back-lit shots in the gm that I couldn't use. The 85mm 1.8 does have issues at time with back-lit rendering. Yeah I hear you on the heavy bag. When I started I used to think that I needed to carry every single lens that I owned thinking I'll miss a shot. Then you realize you probably miss more switching lenses haha. So now I pretty much just bring one lens and save my back
Does this mean that with a 70200 lens, we will no longer need 85 x 18?
Does that mean that with the 70200 lens, we will no longer need the 85 f18?
@@javadezzati5578 I recently got the Tamron 35-150 now instead of the 85 1.8 which I sold.
I did also pick up the sigma 85 1.4. I did a wedding this weekend and used both. I mostly used to 85 1.4 to get more ambient colors when shooting indoors and in low light situations along with having a lighter set up
I agree with you. It's very expensive but it so perfect. Thanks for your review! I switched from Nikon to Sony and I think it's a bit better than Nikon's offering.
Ardra Morse I got mine coming in Monday!! I can’t wait😍
Jonathan Buyno Awesome! You won’t be disappointed 😀
Shane, it’s now a few years later do you still feel this lens is superb. I’m really wondering if maybe you have an A7R4 now Or one of your other professional friends that may have used these together does it handle the resolution?
Hi Darrin, I still love the lens and it's contrast/sharpness has held up on the a7riii however I haven't tried it or worked with anyone who has the a7riv yet. If anything I find myself using this lens even more than I used to when I got it as I have leaned into more video work that has required the versatility this lens offers.
I certainly am impressed by the Canon option though and I suspect that Sony will be coming out with an updated design of this lens to improve its size/AF performance to keep up with the market and their own camera designs that are gravitating to higher resolutions.
@@ShaneBethlehem Thank you so much for responding. my son-in-law works at London drugs and they have a technician program I just picked the lens up for $1600 all in brand new so I will let you know when I play with it on my R4 I’m so excited.
I just tested this lens out this evening. The issue I have is that in focus mode AF-C and focus Area Wide the lens autofocuses itself without me pressing the button. It does this slowly. But when I half-press the shutter button on my camera the lens starts to hunt for an object to focus on, once it finds it it focuses, unfocuses, focuses, unfocuses and so on, it doesn't seem to be able to keep focus? The only solution I now have is to hold the AEL button and click the shutter button. This shouldn't be the case right? Am I doing something wrong?
That's not an uncommon issue to encounter, and it's not an issue with the lens but moreover your settings on the camera or really just the lighting conditions that you're in. If you're in AFC in low light conditions where there's not enough contrast for the camera to find focus, that hunting pattern that you're describing is how the camera will try and find focus.
So basically by the sounds of things most likely it just was too dark for f2.8.
There very well could have been that there is a problem with the lens, I think the most likely thing is that it is just the AFC+lowlight.
I hope that helps
@@ShaneBethlehem It's even more stupid. I updated the firmware of the camera and it worked. I bought the camera second hand recently and the previous owner never updated. That fixed the issue.
Thanks!
Hi there, How is the Low Light Focusing of this lens with A7r3 ? Does it Hunt ?
Hi Subir, i find it very accurate, I've been use it as my main body with this lens and the only situation I notice it ever struggles in is low light video, and by low light i mean like only a little light from the moon. For photos it can basically hit focus in the dark on everything but the stars with minimal hunting.
I regularly use it in dimly lit reception halls and it doesn't hunt, my main issue usually is having to have a smaller focus point cause it likes finding faces of people sometimes behind or beside the subject I am trying the capture, but that's more of a software issue than the lens.
@@ShaneBethlehem Thank you for your response, I appreciate it. I use A7r3 as my Main Body too and that's the reason why I put up the question. I also understand the issue of finding unwanted faces during Reception. I also primarily want to use this Lens for Events indoors and Secondary for other purposes. Good to communicate with you. Thank you again.
i went with the 135mm g master instead smaller. ligther costs less and while it cant zoom has super sharp images at its range. might get this lens someday tho if all goes well!
Solid rationale, I wish I could have both lenses, the 135 is a dream for me to get one day too
Love the video. The link to "the gear I Use" is not working
Oh shoot, you're very right, I'll try and fix that.
I bought the 1.4x TC with the 70-200 GM hoping it would be the best of both worlds. The issue was the images were softer than a baby’s ass defeating the purpose of getting that lens. So I sold the TC, kept the GM, and will get the 200-600G when I upgrade to the A7R4 next year.
we all know that GM stand for "GIANT MONEY"
but the quality is good
nice review bro
subcribed !
Thanks! And lol yea, it is a funny feeling when your lens is almost the same price as your camera 😅
I have the 70-200 and 100-400 GM lenses. I got the battery grip because of the 70-200. :p Much easier to handle that massive piece of glass. :) Very good review, should be interesting to see how Sigma and Tamon will compare to the lens.
Thanks 😊 I'm excited to see Sigma's, considering the quality of their recent lenses, I wana see what they make considering they can't really make a heavier lens
Hi. Which of these two lenses do you use most and gor what and why? Thank you.
I was curious about the quality of photo this lens could make. Now I wonder would it be Overkill for a sony a6300 lol
I have this lens. I only had an A5100 at the time of purchase. Got some very high quality shots with it! Since purchased an A6400 because of the much better autofocus, tracking, and a viewfinder. Wanted reach, so for those cameras it's 105-300mm. My intention was always to go full frame eventually, happy to say I finally have! :-)
@@fx451Jockey i have an a6400 and thinking oh buying this lens for sports photo/video. good choice ?
@@bastianmedina9708 Hi, I shoot dogs in action all the time. For most occasions, an F/4 lens would likely do you. I bought the f/2.8 because if it's overcast the extra stop should help. Sometimes for me it's too shallow a depth of field wide open (with dogs close), so keeper rate suffers if you focus on a nose. The other reason I went with the 2.8 is it was reportedly super fast in focus. This mattered to me. Newer lenses, and the primes are supposedly even faster. I've never regretted buying the lens. It's a great lens, and I get dog portraits too :-) Patrick Murphy Racey tested this lens 5 years ago with an A6300. He loved it. I've seen rumours that the lens is due for a Mk2 update, and I imagine the weight will drop a fair bit. That is probably the biggest problem, but I don't carry it up mountains, so don't care too much about that. Here's PMR's video. czcams.com/video/cuWs9ihVolc/video.html Hope that helps.
Gracias hermano. Muy bien.
Hi. Thank you for this video. Any back focusing issue?
None, I haven't had any issues really ever with focussing on mirrorless camera system thankfully.
I'm not a hundred percent on the topic, but I believe due to having the focussing plane be directly on the sensor it reduces the chance of back focussing significantly.
That mark on your thumb 3:51 is crushed by the lens :)
Ha yeah I jammed my thumb when playing with my dog and that bruise was there for like 6 months!
Excellent video, I appreciate your effort... my ridiculous reason behind is... I wanna take pictures of singers... lol
Ha, well this lens will help out a bunch with that. Thanks for watching!
did you notice about the AF noise of the lens and when you turn in off and on you hear some grinding noise in the lens its is normal for the lens?
Another person just brought this to my attention, I thought it was always the auto-focus kicking in but its actually the aperture opening up quickly, if you try racking the aperture from 2.8-22 really quick it makes the same noise, so its annoying, but i don't think there is any reason to be alarmed
@@ShaneBethlehem thanks for the respond
Mine just arrived today, unfortunately my wife picked up the invoice before I had chance to discreetly file it 😱. First impressions form morning shooting is that it’s unreal.
Ha that's not an ideal situation, I hope she let you keep the lens!
It will be a super fun lens to try this summer though, it does so well with the bright colors and sunny days
Thanks for watching :)
Is autofocus fast and precise in AFC mode?
I only ever use it with continuous AF on and it works like a charm 👌 The only issue is if I'm in a crowd it likes to find every face in the crowd, but that's easy to solve by making a smaller af point and is more of a software issue
@@ShaneBethlehem Ive bought FE 85 1.8 from 2017 and it had terrible autofocus. I also have experience with GM 24-70 2.8 (announced in 2016) having terrible autofocus. Maybe big unit variability in quality?
@@future9615 what cam are you using it on? I ask just because I've used it ona couple cameras myself and have used a couple different versions of the same lens on other people's cameras and from what I aren't the exact same
@@ShaneBethlehem A7RIII. It basically finds eye fine, but lens takes too long to properly AF on it.
@@future9615 that's super peculiar, I use an a7riii and a7iii with mine all the time. Hmmm I think it must be a defective lens then unfortunately, which is stupid considering the price
Still a relevant lens. I just bought mine, and don't care about the weight.
Keep at it
When it comes to price, I justified buying my copy of this lens with the knowledge that it is desirable, so will hold its value well. You tie money up with this lens, but you can always sell it. The cost then is only the depreciation.
This is so true, a concern when I bought this lens was that with the newer camera bodies it wouldn't hold up as well however even with the a7riv now it's still best in class
спасибо ютуб, что можно смотреть на скорости х2 и не уснуть
Do you think you'd be able to translate this into English?
A basically came here to talk myself out of a G master 😅 and to get a Tammy
Ha, well I haven't used the tamron 70-180 but I've seen some fantastic photos taken with it!
Hello! I have recently bought this lens and the aperture makes a noise when it closes and opens. All my other Sony lenses make a little bit of noise when moving the aperture, but for this lens is much stronger! Is this normal? Do all the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses make such a strong noise? I have posted a video here: czcams.com/video/K10BAcN0JOY/video.html Thank you!
mine definitely has noises when rolling though the aperture, but i honestly never noticed it until you mentioned it now, I also have never stopped down so far so quickly before. On my lens it is a little bit quieter i think, but it also could be the microphone, but that clicking when I turn on the camera is something I did notice, I just thought it was the OSS engaging previously.
@@ShaneBethlehem Thank you!
Imo at 200mm the edges are a little bit too soft wide open.
Eh like appreciate that it's not as sharp when comparing itself to itself at 2.8 to f5.6, but compared to previous 70-200s I've adapted to the Sony, this lens performs incredibly well at f2.8
really shitty it's still so pricy. I got a 55-210 already so I thought hey let's buy a teleconverter but NOO you need this lens to make it work so you need an about 2k- 3k lens to ad a 500 euro converter like wtf
Ya it's a pain the teleconverters only work on a select few Sony lens, basically all their white lens 😕 which are all the most expensive lenses already
And no zoom review
I'm sorry I don't quite understand what you mean by this?
10:31 you are absolutely wrong my friend canon's ef and nikon's f mount 70-200 f2.8 lens are quite sharp lens and their performance is on par with sony's 70-200 f2.8 lens they may be older lens but their performance is still the same i have used both the lens in indian weddings and never disappointed me interms of colours , bokeh , sharpness and quality! just because you use sony's gm lens doesn't means other lens from other manufacturers won't perform good. Don't generalize!
You're very warranted to have your own opinion on the matter, but I hope you can understand I'm just here trying to make a review of a lens to help people, I did not mean to offend you or imply Nikon doesnt make fantastic lenses.
The Sony does objectively have a better auto focus motor in the lens, it has 11 blades versus the Nikon's 9, and you're totally fair on the point of sharpness, it's a contested topic and I based my opinion off the results that dxomark got, and as I said in this video I didn't want to compare them in detail.
Thanks for watching the video though and all the best with your photography.
Ha. Triggered much? The guy made a great review and all you wanna do is talk about small stuff like the sharpness difference. Get lost snowflake. Bye
@@mattlionheart8185 sharpness is important for Client's work. That's where real money comes in. Ever shot indian weddings before ? I guess not!

Great review! Thanks!
