  • Coach Nick visited the campus of Lewis & Clark University to hang out with the Men's basketball team for a couple of days and watch a big conference game. You may be surprised to see how good and entertaining Division 3 basketball players are, especially senior guard Brendon Patrick, who lit it up for 43 points.

    Some of the most high IQ and most skilled players I know of went high academic D3. All of them now have successful careers either in coaching, NBA front offices, or whatever else they chose to pursue. They learned how to communicate, read, and write at those schools whilst competing at a high level. Coach Pop said this was the ideal level to coach for a reason. All the folks at this level simply LOVE the game!

      All college players are very skilled you have to be as only top 3% of HS players play in college. The thing that seperates D3 and D1 are that D1 players have both the height requisite and are athletic freaks, D3 players are maybe few inches shorter and less athletic (but still more athletic compared to your average guy). While D2 is in between.

    My son played D3 in the ODAC for 4 years - I loved every minute of it - the details good coaching bad coaching watching him have great games and struggling - it’s the entire process - best game in the world 🏀

    One alumni of Lewis-Clark I know, Alex Mallari, went on to be a top-5 pick in my country's basketball league, the PBA. He also became a 4-time champion with the most successful coach in Philippine basketball.

    This might be my favorite single video in your series. People who genuinely love the game executing it to the best of their ability for no other reason than they just love playing and they’re given an opportunity to do so.

    I'm a Portland St grad, and I currently live 10 mins away from the L&C campus, but I support all Oregon collegiate-level programs.
    Although we aren't know for perennial powers - we've had some success at the lower-division levels (George Fox U. women won D3 national title in 2009; Western Oregon men went to D2 final four in 2017; Oregon Tech men won 3 NAIA national titles in 2004, 2008, 2012)
    Thanks for giving some exposure to small colleges around here, Coach Nick!

    This is my first time seeing D3, I was amazed. So much basketball insight and knowledge, it shows the depth of American basketball as a whole.

      I went to a D2 highschool in VT. I could have played on a D3 MA team in college. It's faster...they are bigger...but the skill set of D3 college is low.

  • @understandunderstand1271

    I played d2 and d3 and my team was really good one guy I played with has played pro all over the world. We scrimmaged d 1 schools and the difference was only size speed strength, the skill and iq is equal at lower levels

    As a biased D3 baseball player, I will always say the difference between a D3 and a D1 player is much smaller than the difference between a D3 and a high school player on average. People who say “oh it’s D3 so it’s bad” really aren’t paying attention

    Nice video. I thought when you said you were coming up to Portland it was because you would be doing something with the Blazers. You would have to have an NBA salary to pay the tuition at Lewis and Clark, lol. Very nice campus though. I've talked to students there and it seems like a great school.

    • @watr19
      @watr19 Před rokem +6

      Gotta remember this is D3 and he’s a senior, the timing for getting shots off is way different from D3 to D1 to NBA, it’s not just about mechanics

    • @oldfrend
      @oldfrend Před rokem +3

      in the nba he'd have a 6"5' athletic freak in his face every trip up so getting his shot up would be much much more difficult. these guys are well coached but i've seen better athletes at my local 24 hr fitness.
