Another clue is at Season 3 Episode 13 the Special Ending Song Lyrics. If you read the lyrics you know the smile isn't geniune unlike Season 3 Episode 12 where Season 1 Opening Song references Horikita's Growth. Even ZAQ(Singer of COTE Openings) said this in her Twitter.

I dont think hes planning to fall in love with kei calculatively, but rather hoping that he gets surprised and does. He hopes for a future he couldn't see deep inside, rather uncharacteristic of him. That's what I got from watching the anime

I believe there are several factors that make it difficult for Ayanokoji to fall in love with Kei
1° He has never received love since he was a baby and lived his entire childhood in the white room which gradually took away his humanity (empathy and affection), as seen when he describes that gradually the only thing he felt was a chill which makes it difficult for him now as a teenager to feel any affection or even empathy for other people.
2° He never saw Kei as a person, he always saw Kei as a parasite, a tool and now as a book about love, this objectification of Ayanokoji in relation to her makes it difficult for him to develop any genuine affection towards her.
3° has to do with taste, it's normal for someone not to fall in love with a close friend, for example, but to fall in love with another woman, it all depends on what the "heart" chooses, Ayanokoji didn't fall in love with Kei, but he did develop some affection (however small) for Horikita as seen when he smiled involuntarily at her.

his sociopathic personality disorder will make it impossible to love a person like a sane person could. he could see her as useful tool but thats it. you become sociopathic threw trauma and your subconcious supress your emotions and makes them unaccessible for your conciouss mind. Tbh when i was watching the anime i thought he was not gonna end up with anyone since most smart people usually dont end up with someone, but then i foumd out he ended up with kei and i was kinda disappointed, not that i have any hate its just i feel they aren't really suited for each other and tbh i thought if he was gonna end up with someone it would be horikita since their both smart and they seem like they would be a good couple, but sadly i dont see that happening (╥﹏╥)

I don't think Saadisfy misinterpreted the scene. I don't see a reason to think Kiyotaka wanting to be conspicuous early on wasn't a genuine desire and thus, one of these "contradictions." It's a repeated expressed desire and it doesn't preclude him from being in control and playing around in the sand box like you allege, because he successfully controlled everything in the background. Kiyotaka's original plan to deal with Ryuuen would have resulted in Ryuuen being expelled while still leaving him room to maintain conspicuousness for a time after with
Under the threat of Chabishira, even if he didn't believe it, he didn't go all out to produce results. He did just enough to pull Class D back into being competitive and show he was trying. Much of his meddling in the first two volumes was him simply trying to help (mainly bailing Sudo out), and the meddling all aligns with his expressed desire not to stand out.
Simply put, there is no rational reason for him to out himself to Ryuuen in the way that he did and willingly put himself on a collision course with Nagumo in the process, unless the thing he wanted out of it was more important than the things he been striving to maintain up to that point.
There is simply no reason for him to drag out cutting ties with Kei like he did out of pure malevolence. The rational thing to do would be to give her the news and hang up. He didn't, and even Kei called him out for talking about pointless things.
And oddly enough, you passed up addressing his monologues about Kei in volume 7.5 (You know, the part where he says Kei is both the person he's grown closest to as well as having become indispensable. Odd when he also said previously that maintaining the connection he had with Kei was the priority and that her usefulness was secondary).

The final chapter of Y1V2 points that he had this contradiction even before Chabashira's threat. Chabashira's final dialogue to Horikita points out this contradiction quite clearly with how getting 50 on the entrance exam contradicts his philosophy of not standing out. Same with the final lines of Y1V2 in Kiyo's monologue where he tries to tell himself that he must not stand out before telling the reader how defective he is. Same with the Y1V11.5 monologue in the ending of the Horikita siblings departure chapter where he has a similar monologue on how he should have been seeking a peaceful life. I think it should be quite apparent from the text that both desires are genuine but that his "outward appearing self" aka the peaceful times seeking self does not correspond to his more subconscious and deeper "White Room" self that can take actions that stand out. This contradiction between not wanting to stand out but also being conspicuous was highlighted also in Horikita dialogues in Y1V2 and Y2V10.
So I think there could be rational reason for outing himself to Ryueen in that his insatiable White Room curiosity to learn more overrode his "outward appearing self" desire to stay inconspicuous through his experiments on both Ryueen and Kei.

The answer to getting all 50s on his test is literally answered in y1v5- Kiyotaka doesn't know what "normal" is. He purposely tried to get a "normal" grip strength in order to not stand out, but using Sudo as a gauge ended up outing him as having above average strength because Sudo is dumb and also doesn't know what "normal" would be. Same with the 50s. Kiyo doesn't have a perception of what "normal" is, so he purposely did what felt right to not stand out.
Much of this contradiction is answered in y1v4.5 with the fortune teller. He's purposely putting on the character of what he thinks is a normal person in front of others rather than being real. This was already addressed in one of Avent's original videos- Kiyo doesn't like his White Room self. He wants to defy his dad. He laments in y1v7.5 how his white room self might always be a part of him.
That was one of the early themes of KiyoKei- they weren't hiding their real darkness from each other. That's what made it an engaging relationship.
He's purposely trying hide his white room self and not engage it. What part of his meddling in y1v1-2 is his White Room self? Rather, much of his meddling is actually in line with the fact that underneath an incredibly messed up person is actually a kind person, albeit not entirely philanthropic, but a kind person nonetheless. This aligns with what we see in Volume 0 as well. We learn throughout year one that Kiyotaka likes to teach (even if he doesn't realize it himself). This isn't "White Room" self. This is the opposite. Kiyotaka says it himself in y2v3- the difference between him and his dad is that he reaches his hand out to help others.
His White Room self only engages when Chabashira tries to blackmail him. Even if the chances were high that it was bunk, Kiyo still chose to respect it because he doesn't like to act without 110% certainty and he doesn't want to go back to the white room. Now he's in his "Survive at all costs" mode and it's clashing with his initial desire not to stand out. It's clear throughout the early volumes of year one, in spite of Chabashira making him try, Kiyo IS taking precaution not to stand out as much as possible. His actions aren't contradictory towards his desire not to stand out.
In fact, that's what he monologues about in y1v7 after discovering Chab's blackmail is 100% bunk- this is his last opportunity go back to a quiet life like he initially stated was his desire. If he doesn't take it now, he'll get dragged out into the spotlight by all the class leaders.
In fact, he even initially turns down Manabu's initial call for help, which supports the idea he DID want to not stand out.

I think these two are two separate things. The whole point of the 50 mark things was not getting 50 in just one subject but exactly 50 in every subject. This is different from not knowing what is normal on only a single data point like grip strength in Sudou's case. And Kiyo knew statistics from the White Room so he knew that what he was doing would stand out and Chabashira's dialogue in Y1V2 also points that out. If he truly did not want to stand out, he would not have gotten an exact 50 but chosen a more natural range of numbers. So we have narrative evidence suggesting this act was intentionally conspicuous and basic common sense from statistics suggesting that it is conspicuous.
I think that with this evidence it is very difficult to say that Kiyo did not do intentionally conspicuous actions when Kinu clearly spells this out that this act is conspicuous and does not appear to be a plot hole missed by Kinu based on his intended narrative evidence. And therefore, we can conclude that the Y1V2 evidence demonstrates this contradiction was present in Kiyo from the very start. And furthermore, his White Room self is not just to survive at all costs but to know more and more deeply to satisfy his curiosity as V0 itself points out and his monologues about his curiosity through out various monologues suggests.
The answer is his curiosity.

Where the LN is heading it looks like kiyo might fall for horikita and she might not, until the final volume then revealed her feelings towards him.

That particular ending about him facing something unexpected was a good point that i myself thought about.
And interesting thing is, Arisu was the one who did intent to initiate that very way to get closer to kouji.
In her own monologue she says that kouji aint the type to get moved by words. So she would need to obstruct him, have him encounter things beyond his control, to break and make him vulnerable and only after that she would show him love.
It's really intriguing how well Arisu knows Ayanokouji's character and is also aware as to what kind of approach would work on him,to move him. Not just in a field of class battles and challenges but also in the realm of emotions.

As someone who appreciates Kei as a character i do hope that she would turn out to be even better character in the future when kouji leaves ( i mean its becoming very obvious reading the recent volumes). She might just end up having a great influence on kouji later on. And if they do end up together miraculously again, then it would be just cherry on the top for me.

I personally like Arisu, but objectively speaking, it looks like the author intended for Suzune and Ayanokoji to end up together, or for Suzune to be the girl Ayanokoji genuinely falls for. Ayanokoji has been obsessed with her "growth" more than anyone else's, it became grating at some point for me bec bruh why are u so obsessed with her? lol. Throughout the novel for many volumes, he develops a real relationship and friendship with Suzune, always mentoring, guiding, and assisting her to achieve her potential. Ayanokoji's relationships with Arisu, Kei, and Ichinose have always been practical and was driven by his motive to manipulate and shape them to satisfy his curiosity and intrigue in human character. Ayanokoji also explicitly
said that he feels nothing for Kei and is using Ichinose as another tool to further drive a rift between him and Kei and to also gain control of class B(D). It's strange how kei stans overlook multiple instances where Ayanokoji made it clear he has no real feelings for Kei (which is very in line with his character btw) other than using her as a tool to navigate the "romance curriculum". If anything, him unconsciously smiling to Suzune is an indication that only Suzune had the ability to prompt a significant shift in his character - something that no other girl has been able to do to him. That's very telling that the author meant for Suzune to be THAT girl, or it could also mean that Suzune is the author's favorite. Either way, it does favor the outcome that Ayanokoji will end up with Suzune or she will be the girl he grows in love with.
While I still think that the most logical conclusion would be for him to end up alone, if I had to choose someone based on how the author has built up the story, framed the narrative & personified the characters, my money's on Suzune. But if this happens, I think it's gonna be at the latter part (end) of the series. The more interesting matter is whther Suzune would reciprocate Kiyo's newfound feelings, because as we speak, she just sees him as an ally.

The worst fear of kiyokei fans is that Kiyotaka is not in love with Kei since he had already admitted it several times and is even using her as an experiment to learn love But why would I do that? Maybe Kiyotaka will change her for another since he is not going to have just Kei but he is going to have more girlfriends but I think he will be with Horikita from what I see they give us signs That when Kiyotaka finishes learning about love, he will leave Kei and he come for Horikita since she was the only one who made him smile naturally and genuinely which Kiyotaka is left thinking That's why he may think that if Horikita gave him a natural smile then he may think that Horikita can help him change thanks to that smile ☝🏻

It's rather be Arisu, Horikita or Kei who has strongest possibility of valuable feedback for Koji. But the problem is, if it's come to love Ayanokoji has yet to learn that necessity of others isn't just for him to posses but he also have to learn to make himself being needed by others. In other words, he just need to know the importance of "symboosis mutualism" and accept that feeling of love is just some sort of channeling for that achievement. If not anything complex can be thought, all i can say is Ayanokoji was only at the proccess to learn how to become human and regain his humanity

I believe Ayanokōji *wants* to fall in love with Karuizawa, but can't. As a result, I believe there are three paths he could go:
1. The ending everyone expects, which is that he ends up with Horikita.
2. He ends up with someone else, which is dubious given his thoughts on most of his classmates, but still a possibility.
3. This last one might sound weird, but whatever. Basically, Karuizawa is *still* dependent on Ayanokōji in Year 2, at least to a certain extent. Now, either this is bad writing, or this could do two things: one, it could go down the path of Karuizawa actually being unable to change due to her trauma, and that sometimes it simply isn't possible to change on a fundamental level, which could be interesting if done right; or two, Ayanokōji could break up with Karuizawa, and such a shocking and heartbreaking moment, alongside a long time of being alone with no one to latch onto, Karuizawa develops as a person and stops being a parasite entirely. This could also inspire other shifts in her character and, potentially, Ayanokōji could actually fall in love.
This is all speculation, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. However, it is interesting to think about. I'm fine with any end relationship so long as it's well done and makes sense.

I know this of topic but I wouldn’t be surprised if kei gets expelled. She pretty much served her purpose in the series and there really isn’t anything left for her as a character moving forward. But like I’ve always said COTE ending has to be ayanokoji losing because that’s is what going to prove his father wrong. I believe potentially he can lose to the class leaders teaming up to beat him in the end. Throughout the series It just Looks like he training them to be better. Season 2 he beat ryuen. Now ryuen is motivated to beat him and became an even better leader for his class. Arisu recently just had character development since she lost to him and lost her assistant as well. She blames koji for it by calling him an awful person. Just like ryuen she still wants to beat him. Ichinose has completely changed because of him and Horikita had the biggest development of them all because of him. All of this connects to a fated ending where they will have to team up to beat him and the white room. Remember his biggest wish is to lose in order to gain his freedom

I think Ayanokoji, at the moment, just isn’t capable of love.
Because of the conditions of the white room, (including punishment for showing emotion, being around people that give you no emotion, and focusing so much on the “intelligent” part of the mind that the emotional part of it doesn’t progress at all, possibly even regressing during this time) plus what I’m certain is a bit of hidden trauma (that he might not even realize exists), all of his emotions are far more muted and black and white compared to a normal 16 year old.
He knows this about himself, and is definitely one of the things that he wants to improve upon during his time at this school. It’s a big part of his goal of spending 3 years as a normal high schooler.
He’s not dating Kei because he loves her. In the anime at least (which is all I’ve seen), he kind of makes it clear to the audience he isn’t in love with Kei. Instead, them dating has two purposes. First, that he can help her grow (albeit in a very mean way) because he does still in fact care for her, even if he has no romantic interest in her, and second, so he can learn more about love, hoping their relationship can at least be a stepping stone for him to become capable of feeling an emotion as nuanced as love, because he hasn’t been able to and still is (in my opinion) incapable of actually holding that emotion.
I think a third reason, which kind of combines with the second, is that he’s willing to be in love with Kei. Like I said, he does care for her and like her as a friend at the minimum. I’m certain he’s ok with the idea, possibly even hoping a slight amount, that he can skip all the steps coming with gaining emotion and just genuinely fall in love with Kei. He’s definitely not depending on it, but he’s more than willing to let that happen if he does. He just wants to be able to be in love, and he sees that a relationship with Kei, genuine or not, is the best first step to getting there.
