- Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 is a fairly old PS2 racing game centered around Japan and its mountain roads. Launched to mixed reception and mediocre sales, could this game perhaps be a misunderstood gem?

Fun fact: the series was originally known as Kaido Battle. The first Kaido Battle, Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift was localized for US only, while the English version of Kaido Battle 2 (Kaido Racer) was released for EU/AU market but not US
well that's one way to bollock your sales
@@connorbutters8479 All those name changes were just so unnecessary.
Kaido 2's career was very forgiving
Also thanks to the difference of versions, non-JP ones don't have special vinyls and certain cars.
Ngl Kaido Battle 3 Touge Legends was my favourite since it had refrences to Initial D , Wangan Midnight and Over Rev
The thing is, drifting isn’t really the core thing in this series despite what the name might suggest. The Western publisher probably only put drift in the name to attract the Tokyo Drift/Initial D crowd.
Yes but when you learn to drift properly you will be drifting all the time because its the fastest and awesome
Also, at 7:30 WTF IS THERE RIDGE RACER MUSIC
It's like people who can't differentiate between Initial D and Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune. Two totally different games.
Dont forget about the Over Rev! refrences
@@kagenlim5271 It's called video edit

The funniest part of that truck is that it has a black background/yellow text plate, meaning that it's a company car. That guy is racing his work truck.
Oh God. I remember popping this in my PS2 in the middle of the night and having _that_ opening cutscene play out was one of the most memorable moments I've had. Game's bloody immersive af when you play it at 1 am.
This last Kaido Battle is particular great because of the amount of contents it had and the details they included, it's the first Kaido Battle game that actually had the real parking lot of every track modelled. To normal people it's probably a bit meaningless, but for us hardcore fan of the series and the whole japanese street racing culture...it's details like these that made it absolutely legendary.
This game is great for a budget game and slowly become my favourite PS2 racing game. The intro of this game itself already got me into this series. Worth noting that some cutscenes are quite broken of emulation. This game not only have JDM and European car but also has some D1 drift and WRC cars as well! Also Midget too. In previous Kaido Battle game has a lot of D1, European and American cars. Worth checking out.
🤝
My favorite tas txr zero .. before they had to worry about licensing cars. All types of jdm,European, and American legends . Also alot of non legends. 4 door skylines, integras, k cars etc
@@shifty1927
K-Car, like a Dodge Aries or kei car, like a Suzuki Cappuccino?
It also have Kancil (Mira)
dominating the touge in a Renault 5 Turbo 2 is incredible tbh
Fun fact: When Genki was developing the US version of TXR3, they were also developing a Fast & Furious game which was going to be released at November 2003 alongside TXR3 but they cancelled it. No reason or information about the cancellation was revealed but a possibility is that they were focusing more on TXR3.
Was that fast and furious game related to the Tokyo Drift one that was released on PS2?
Tokyo extreme racer zero had a trailer for the original fast and furious in the games bonus videos. Also a cool street racing documentary.
Another fun Fact: Kaido battle was planned to be released for Nintendo DS but it got cancelled
Here is a trailer for it czcams.com/video/aakls0_VU9s/video.html
@@DarcyFerrier Nope, that game was made by another developer.
They had to cancel the F&F game to focus on the Yellow Busses
Finally someone talks about this gem in the rough! This game is very good and when it comes to drifting it requires skill and the amount of ''stages'' it has is amazing and the amount of cars ranging from work truck to a golf which is pretty bizarre but most certainly welcome! All and all great video!
but did this fool even finish this game? straightuphippo talked about it too
Don't forget this game has somewhat of a story to it in the message boards, the more people you race against the more people talk about you on the boards and more rivals show up.
Oh oh, and the references to Initial D, Wangan Midnight, and Over Rev!! With the drivers that show up.
@@Flako92 There is literally a dude named Takumi lol, and ofc when he is behind you he has his lights off. Though he sucks
@@starfire2133 there's a bunch of ID references like the dude who bought a 86 because of "a certain cartoon" and calls Haruna a "wierd made up name", the various teams like the Haruna Starlights and some other stuff, this game does references pretty well all things considered.
What a bold statement. of course I have played it, and I absolutely love every bit of it. Especially the soundtrack. It's a shame you have muted it in your playthrough, especially that Daiki Kasho, the composer of many songs from Gran Turismo has composed some tracks for this game too. Never got to finish it tho. I have to do so someday cuz I already unlocked pretty much all the cars + bought some rare ones like the sileighty, ae86 2door, and the onevia.
also there are A LOT of initial d references. for an id fan discovering them all really is pure joy
@@dusterpl6093 Not only that, but there's also a huge reference to TXR0 with the plot of the game, plus a reference to Wangan Midnight at the end :p
@@onelonejackal613 You cant just ignore the real life aftermarket democars recruiting the players for sponsorships and active Hot Version/Ikaten personalities active at that time being an absolute enigma to beat during the day don't you?
@@wassey5066 Yeah that why i dislike him, i only got her due to recommendation lol
I barely heard about Genki, and much less played their games, but they seem really really solid. At most I played this spin-off game on the 360, Import Tuner Challenge, and while it didn't have many cars you could turn your car into an absolute rice field, letting you change almost everything the car had
Edit: Turns out ITC was actually a sequel and Ubisoft just gave it that name just because
Import Tuner Challenge was actually a sequel to the TXR series, it's just that as he pointed out, the series are known by so many names it's rather difficult to brought up in any racing game discussions
ITC is legendary to me for the ludicrous customisation and the classic TXR formula. I even finished the game recently with just one car as well!
@@callumroper7251 ITC was a disappointment to me as it was finished in sub 6 hours. the older games took days or weeks to grind to 100%
@@adlibbed2138 They should just name every game "Jintei's Tantrum" (C1 Grand Prix included).
@@FlipFanatic Sorry but sub 6 hours? I went back and played few months ago, didn't lose once and took alot longer than 6 hours to beat every rival. Dont talk bollocks.
Another great touge racer that not many people know about is Battle Gear 3, originally an arcade title but was ported to ps2 exclusively in japan
I really love all racing games made by Genki, the lore and cars and all the references they make to Wangan Midnight and other media.
God, this game is truly an underrated gem.
Played the hell out of it and managed to beat every single rivals.
Played through this game several times, and I must say, this has to be one of the best racers on the PS2, and within its genre, its probably the best of the bunch. Huge number of cars and tracks, a cool upgrade system, many events and rivals to race, a pretty damn good soundtrack (especially the boss intros), customization, sponsors, and so on! If you want a touge racer, this is it.
A true masterpiece! I was too young to grasp it when i had it for PS2, i replayed it to 100% and i had a blast. I had to use a guide for all the wanderers tho, but i loved every second of it
The thing i really like about this game are the forums, it makes the world feel much more immersive
Dude I’d honestly love to see a full play through of you playing this tbh, I’d do anything to play it but watching you satisfies the urge
I bought my first wheel for this game, a DFGT. I used that wheel for 10 years. TXRD2 with a wheel is the best thing ever. It feels really good. I was surprised how the handling felt a lot more realistic than the mainline TXR series.
One of my favorite things was the pseudo online system they had in it. It was a really nice touch to the game.
I still pull out my Logitech Driving Force GT Pro (the nicest PS2 compatible FF wheel) just for this game alone. The fact you can feel the grip strips they put in the roads so well brought me back to when I used to live in Japan driving some of these mountains (driving, not racing ofc)
I get depression remembering the intro song only exists in the intro. Neither the band or anyone else can find the original recording.
Nice to see you playing one of my favorite racers! I remember almost reaching the penultimate arc (Zao and Aso) and had a hell of fun in this game!
Brutally underrated game that deserves more attention than it usually is.
I’d love to see more content from ya with this game
dude i picked up a copy of this from amazon, with only TXR3 as my reference, and i was blown away. such intricate car customization, amazing touge physics, satisfying learning curve and a really funny and refreshing in-game social networking system. i was hoping someone would make a video and i'm so glad you did!
I love the Midnight club 3 garage music in the background as you are customizing the car in the beginning haha
The fact that I JUST find your channel and then a day later you play one of my favorite racing games ever from childhood is absolutely wild lmao
I remember playing this game as a kid. Would love to see you play this game more!
Glad you discovered this, it's an absolute masterpiece I love the forum feature it really makes the world feel alive
These games is actually some of my favorite racing games
The entire series is awesome
Station square music! I love the music you use in your videos so much man.
Please do a part 2 of this Eden loved the game!!
Of note - this game handles SURPRISINGLY well with a steering wheel. I’d had this since it first released (always loved it!), but never got to race it with a wheel until a few years ago. Well worth the investment. REALLY cool game.
This was a childhood game of mine! Never beat it but I always loved to play it. Finally someone talks about this hidden gem.
I'd love to see more of this game, really hoping for another episode.
If it doesn't happen, Ill play it myself
This game looks pretty awesome, gotta try it out for myself someday! Love how the progression seems to work here.
Also gotta love Edens very powerful pogging at 11:13 and 22:41
Jimmy Broadbent would definitely have approved of those car choices, both with the turbo box and mx5.
I've been waiting for someone to play this legendary game!
I like that you used a Ridge Racer song for the drift racing!
Awwww persona 5 music at the end !
Thanks for the video ! And i can't wait for Royal to be release again hehe
This was one I got when I was in my preteen years, and now, in my mid 20s, I still LOVE this game and HATE this game at the same time. But I only hate it because it's SO challenging at times, you can figure out how to work the mild grind, (signing on sponsors, lvl 10 gymkhana ca attack in late game nets like 4m+ CP a win), but you still need to be a good player to actually BEAT the slashers. If you figured out the critical engine and turbo part sets for each engine type, you can make some crazy horsepower. Thanks Dustin for showing the world this GEM of a game.
I love Kaido Racer 2 so much. I'm currently doing a Suzuki Carry only playthrough.
This is still my favorite racing game, just absolutely nails everything I ever asked for. So grateful this got a localization, however rough it may be. I remember nabbing it on release back in college. Huge love for all of the Genki Racing Project games, Racing Battle might be my #2 pick.
I’ve literally been playing Xtreme racer 3 and drift 2 for the passed month. Love the series and wish they’d bring it back. Then after came import tuner challenge.
The Station Square track on my favorite car.. you're a man after my own heart
aaand now i need to play it, thanks :D great video
Would love to see more of this game!
I've played hundreds of hours on these genki games. Absolutely loved them back in the day!
Ive always been a fan of touge and genki and all that jazz, so txrd2 was one of the first ever genki games i played, but thanks to my pc's specs it only ever ran at 30% speed, glad to see you covrering it Dustin!
Was loving the Sonic adventure station square music towards the end LMAO
Oh hell yeah, so happy to see this franchise getting some love for once
One of my favorites for the PS2, my dad had a copy and I gave it a try after watching inital D, and fell in love. Bought a couple of games from this series when i bought a refurbished ps2 and I love all of them
I played all of these. Was introduced to the first Tokyo Xtreme Racer in the early 00's on Sega Dreamcast
I'd definitly love to see more !
I like how the game says "Prepare For Struggle" in the race start and then Eden passes the rival in less than 20 seconds with a Turbo Box
I'd love to see some more content for this it looks like an absolute blast and I'm gonna have to try it for myself
Definitely need more of this
I have this game and now I’m gonna play it from scratch all over again!
Kaido racer 2 was my childhood weekend touge racing simulation for such a long time
Id love to see more of this absolute banger
I bout to say, I can't be the only one old enough to remember this series. I had all the drift and xtreme racer series including recently import racer
Yes a video on tokyo xtreme racer let's go
Ahh man this is a nostalgia trip right here
This games awesome. I have all of them and 1 of them was on dreamcast.awesome video
Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero is still to this day one of my favorite (and most played) racing games of all time. I can't even remember how many PS2's I killed letting them run on autopilot to get miles up to unlock the last level engines for cars to see how fast they'd go. Goddamn... good times.
The TXR games are the real definition of underrated games. These never got good marketing in the US and a lot of people who got into these games was by word of mouth mainly. I got TXR Zero because I spotted it at GameStop at a deep discount and this game I got it because a friend of mine that loves to play obscure games gifted it to me and before that day I didn’t even know that game existed even though I had played some of the older games by that point.
seeing videos like this show up on my feed makes me feel old, all these young youtubers finding out about these "hidden gems" that literally EVERYBODY I knew in school was playing when they released. But hey, at least they are getting some attention still.
This is one of my favorite driving games of all time, especially TXR Zero and 3, incredible amounts of fun!
My favorite game of all time, and feels fantastic on a wheel. This is one game every touge fan must play.
Its been 15 years and I still play this and Chain Reaction
So glad to see videos like this, this game doesn’t get the recognition that it deserves
That *_Ridge Racer OST Slaps!_*
I miss these old Kaid Battle games. Still have part 1 and 2 in my PS2 hard drive. Great OST in both of them too
Auto Modelista is also a very fun touge game. It has engine swaps, great car selection and tuning. Definitely recommended
Hakone has always been my favorite map from battle gear. I had the course memorized at one point lol.
For those of you that haven't played this game, I suggest you should get it and give it a go. It's simple, easy to learn, but the races can get intense, especially at the higher levels. This game is an absolute gem of a game! It's really captures what a game can/should be!
Please do more of this.
Hardly anyone knows about the Kaido games made by Genki. Very nice vid man
Need to see more I love this game so much
I loved this game as a kid, the tuning was insane, cool euro cars too.
The Coffee Breaks in GT4 took place on a track that's named Gymkhana in the files. That's why :P
I have so many playthroughs in this game. It was and still is my most played game ever. It's still in my PS2 right now. I've always been an Initial D fan and this game was a great alternative to spending money playing the Initial D arcade machines.
Played the game most of my time in winter break during my time in uni, maining the yellow Cyborg until I have enough to main the RX7 FD while using the C35 Laurel to drift.
Till this day, I still remember there was a driver who prefers Galants to Lancers with other characters here and the damn drift physics to cause my thumbs to sore after multiple gymkhana farming and speed drifting attempts on ShigaKu touge
Tokyo Xtreme Racer one and two were one of my most favorite games on Playstation growing up. These games got me into cars.
I just love how Kaido Racer Chain Reaction had cars like DeTomaso Vallelunga and Renault 21
Please continue the series
I still play TXR3 to this day. It’s my favourite racing game of all time. Just got a copy of TXR0, excited to try it out for the first time.
Short and simple: please make more videos about this game
I still have this game after all these years
I remember the opening cutscene was used as a trailer on a demo disc I had but could never find it in stores. Honestly thought the game never came out here in Australia.
Spent years trying to figure out the name of the game again.
Oh yes...! That Midnight Club 3 garage music in the background.
Using a wheel completely changes this game its absolutely amazing.
Omg I was just thinking about this Tokyo Xtreme racing zero the other day Such a good game way ahead of its time
i would want to watch another video of this, like a walkthrough of the career mode
i actually finished this game once. 100%. all opponents, bosses, events. but seeing you dominate opponents with just a city turbo, beautiful. you became takumi
The opening is named Call Me now by South Dakota Star and is currently a lost media.
8:11, ahh, Illmerica by Wolfgang Gartner I see. You sir have good taste in music.
Yo we need to see the later stages of the game with properly fast cars like RX7s and such, really liking this game
The latest game they made is Import Tuner Challenge on I think the Xbox 360 only, its AMAZING man
Wow this game really worths a try! Btw please review "Project Torque" on steam there aren't a lot of players but the game is really fun so please review it so more and more people can join the community. Best wishes
Games like this Aare what make the 6th console gen so much fun to revisit.
absolutely the biggest generation for budget racing games
I need more of this
I knew from the thumbnail it was TXRD2. I've played it so much its up there with ACE COMBAT 04 and the PS2 NFS games.
Quite a pity the Shutokou/Kaido Battle saga ended up in a short-lived smartphone game.
Please also do the Japanese-only C1 Grand Prix-it's more like colliding Shutokou and Kaido Battle together, but stages are set in not just expressway but also circuits like Tsukuba.
This game deservers a fan translation as soon as possible.
