Katie's Allotment - March 2014 - Fences and Flowers

- During this episode I am joined by my Dad, David, who will be helping me to put up my pallet fence. I will also be getting my flower patch ready for the year ahead, planting some flowers and telling everyone about my ideas and plans for this little area.

Lovely fence, and I also was reminded of working on projects with my dad, who loved his garden! My neighbor is working on cleaning up his lot next door, and too down the old fence - after I clear the brambles on my side, I think I'll put up a little pallet fence in the meantime!
Flowers are an important addition to any veg garden!
Your dad is such a sweetheart, he reminds me of my dad when I was younger and even when I got older, he helped me with anything I needed. Dad's are great. I love the fencing out of pallets.
Wonderful video! Love the ideas and how you add all the colors through your flowers, I plant a lot of flowers, I think they add beauty and bring in the bees. So relaxing and makes you feel happy to see them all.
Another great update Katie. Very well done. You have also just proved an eternal truth that it isn't necessity that is the mother of invention all you need is a daughter with an imagination and a Dad who will move heaven and earth to make it happen. There is nothing in this world a Dad wouldn't do for his daughter. All the best and I look forward to your next video.

Very nice! It's wonderful that you and your dad are close enough to be able to help each other. Regarding your grapevine, just go ahead and take that broken piece off and throw it away. The vine should still be just fine as long as the roots haven't been totally destroyed. I've had one that was cut back all the way to the ground, with no harm done. I was touring one of my gardens earlier and found that my puppy (she's six years old actually, but still acts like a pup) had dug up one of my newly planted rhubarb crowns...the brat! But I love her anyway. :)
I like the fence idea with the chicken wire on the upper part. Your allotment is coming along very nicely!.....ann

Great job with the March update. Love the video! Oh, your plants at the end of the video needs more light. Tip: Buy some mylar Christmas wrapping paper and use the back side as a reflective or buy some shop lights with the highest lumen tubes. Your plants will love life a lot better! Hope you don't mind me helping and hope to see more videos.
Hi Katie, You are an inspiration to young people, so congratulations on your videos. I thought, as an organic gardener, I'd share some tips with you, although you may be aware of them. Two Wests and Elliot sell butterfly netting, which has been wonderful used on my cages, for preventing the cabbage butterfly from laying eggs and devastating my cabbages. I use tent pegs to for access and sew the netting on the tubes with fishing gut. I got a friend to cut my granddaughter's old copper tank into 4" circles (he turned the tops over for safety) to prevent the slugs from feasting on my young lettuces and beetroot and finally I bought very fine white mesh to prevent the carrot fly doing their damage. After making such a worthwhile effort it can be very upsetting to find ruined crops.

I am definitely going to invest in some decent netting for my fruit cage and for my brassicas this year. There's no point scrimping when it comes to your crops, in some cases you have to spend some money to protect your crops right? And if you spend a little more then it should last you longer too :)

Very Nice! I also plant lots of flowers for cutting and filling vases in my house. My favorites are asters - they come in many different colors and petal types.
It's looking great!!! Pallets are wonderful for all kinds of things aren't they? My plot is full of them. Looking forward to seeing the next installment.

The best thing about pallets is that they are very handy AND they are free! I've just taken some apart to make myself a little gate :)
I enjoyed the visit at your 'lotty'. You help Dad, Dad helps you...family is great. I grab pallets when ever I see them. Excellent project. Did you grow up helping your Dad in the gardens? My Granddaughters love helping in the gardens when ever they can come & visit. I hope some of what I teach them helps them later in life.
Thank you for your lovely comment. As a matter of fact gardening has always been in the family, my grandparents had a veg garden and my great grandparents made cordials and jams etc. My Dad has only really been growing vegetables for around 3 years and I've helped him with his plot from the beginning . Young children love gardening don't they and it's great to beable to learn from family, it makes it that more special :) My dad recently found his great grandads seedling widger in the garage, its something so small but it will be cherished forever.
I have a 3 year old white seedless grape that bore fruit in its second year. I have it in a very large planter, trained up the wall. I gave it plenty of tomato feed when the fruit set to get the sweetest grapes.
oh that sounds perfect! I need to buy another grapevine, this one unfortunately died. Although I learnt my lesson now to never leave anything within my dogs reach!
Honestly, I bought the Vine and had little hope of success, with the late start last year I was thinking it had died :(. Yeah, go for it and buy a new one, when it comes true you will be so chuffed :D.

i am up in aberdeen i have had an allotment for a few years but just got a new one i am jumping from 18m2 to 100m2 and you have inspired me to make videos of the allotment it looks like good fun i worked at dobbies garden world for 12 years in the core gardening dept which i miss so much but you have inspired me and i am going to have a bash at making a video thanks katie
Thank you Katie for this video. It's a great idea!!! My wife and I live in the countryside here in the united states near the ocean and were looking for a simple and cheap " rustic " looking picket fence look, and this is great !!! We are going to take this idea and with a couple little changes make our fence. We'll got to run Katie we are about to wAtch and subscribe to your other videos and look for more great ideas. The wife wants me to somehow make a large greenhouse. We have a lot of land.

Great video, im hopeing to get a lotti soon got my name down just a waiting game now, love your dad, im growing everything in potatoe bags in my very small garden at the moment, cant wait for things to grow so i can pick them , never really done anything like this before, i have made one mistake though, an that is i have sown all at the same time, silly me, wont b doing that again, anyway keep up the good work im learning loads x

Your fence would look cool if you painted it the same colour as your shed, although it would cost a bit with stain
Hello. A very enjoyable video and what a lovely little plot you have! How about putting a trellis up against the side of your shed and growing a climbing rose up the trellis and across the roof. Roses are such a beautiful flower to have in the garden and it would give your shed that country cottage look. Thank you for sharing and I look forward to your next episode.
Do you know what, I had never ever thought of that! What a great idea! I'm off to the edible garden show this Saturday so I will be looking out for more plants and will have my eyes peeled for a climbing rose now. You're welcome! A pink or white rose would look lovely against the purple shed. With the width of your shed you could fit two roses but if not one towards to back of it would look great. Keep an eye out for a buddleia that would also look great at the back of your flower bed if you got a tall type as the can grow up to 2m, and the butterflies adore them!

Nice video I like youe bicycle trailer. HPVs (Human Powered Vehicles) are a great way to get both where you're going AND some good exercise to boot. :-)

Are the pallets Heat treated? I was wondering, because I saw another video if the wooden pallets are not heat treated, they can seep chemicals into the ground?

Katie, Can you tell us who are in the States about allotments, who owns them and how do you get them. Seems to be a community of gardeners, which is lovely. We go it alone on our homestead in Florida. Love your informative videos. Keep them coming. Blessings for a beautiful garden.
Hi and no problem :) The council own the allotment site and then rent each plot out to members of the village for a small fee (in my case my tiny plot costs £7.00 a year) You have to put your name down on a waiting list and then once a plot comes available you sign a little contract and its yours. Our village allotment site is relatively small with only around 30 plots on it but the community is great and everyone I have met is lovely. We don't have a large enough garden to grow food in and my plot is a 4 minute walk away, but I would love a small homestead with chickens! When the grass grows , it will be a pain to cut back. Could you not have put the pallets onto your raised beds. You might have wanted a gutter garden or something like that , more growing space in small area.. Just a thought .. I do hope you get to grow on your fence though..
Thank you for the comment and since this video was made nearly 2 years ago I have come to realise that vertical growing would have been better for my strawberries. It seems a shame to get rid of my nice homemade raised beds but we'll see what the near future holds.
Lavender and Leeks just mulch with wood chip where you can't get the lawn mower or strimmer, all natural and stops the grass/weed growth. As its biodegradable in 2 years if you want a change just dig it in etc

oh please be careful about wood that has been treated with anything. much of it will leach into what you are growing and especially root veg but really anything food.
