  • The Surplus Strength Universal Pulley is a cleverly designed rack-attached pulley system with some advantages and some disadvantages compared to other cable options. The system is made in the USA and it will fit a variety of racks.

  • @scottweaverphotovideo
    @scottweaverphotovideo Před 3 lety +4

    Thanks for the vid! Something that is rarely addressed is whether units like this restrict the cable's movement to downward only. Most of them do. I like the flexibility of doing facepulls and many other shoulder and back moments that are possible when the cable can be pulled outward (horizontal) as well as downward. There is so much more you can do with lat pulldown mechanisms than just downward lat pulls. Many sports kinesiologists argue that pullups are superior to lat pulls anyway.

    • @jasoncampbell3022
      @jasoncampbell3022 Před 3 lety +1

      This is the reason that the front of the pulley is completely unrestricted on the UPS. Facepulls are perfect on the UPS! Thanks, Scott!!

    • @OU-812
      @OU-812 Před 2 lety +2

      You really want a functional trainer for that but then that is not really tall enough to do lat pulldowns if that is something important to you. I already have a functional trainer and if I sit on the ground and face outward for the pull down is sort of works but it's a bit of a pain to setup each time. So this will fill that gap for me I think (just ordered). And yes I do have a pull up bar which O agree is better overall. This is just another tool in the box and I think for $400 and the quality of it it's worth it with other options I'm the price range. The reviewer kept comparing to a pre fitness single stack which is unfair from a price point.

    Very nice product. I think if you have a PR 5000 V2, in particular a six-post rack, it doesn’t make much sense since it doesn’t save you that much space. A PR 5000 owner is better off purchasing the REP lat pull down attachment for $349…and if they don’t already have the rear stabilizer, it is only $99 more. if you have a 4-post rack and space savings is a most, then this universal pulley should definitely be considered.

    What we’re seeing here is the big brands have either chosen not to do this to help sell their other products or they’re missing a really cool product from their lineup. The fact any of these units sold for this insane price proves people want a cable option that spans the sides of their rack. Myself included. I appreciate the company for innovating but since I have skills and tools I will have fun making my own exactly how I prefer for a fraction of the cost. It matches my Rogue rack in terms of look and feel, and I haven't noticed any wobble during use. The pulley system is also incredibly smooth. I had been using a plate loaded lat tower before I bought this, and the lack of drag or resistance in the UPS immediately stood out. Overall I am very pleased. I get a full range of motion on my lat pulls now (which was the main reason I bought this) and got to customize my rack at the same time. Supporting American manufacturing was also a bonus.

In your video you say an ideal height for this attachment would be around 80-90in but I have a RML-3WC which has a cross member's height of 72 in high. If I were to sit on the ground instead of on a bench and grab a Rep 4000 leg roller so to keep my legs down, do you think that would work to do lat pull down's? 🤔Thanks in advance for helping me figure this out!

The crossmember from upper crossmember is 84inches I think I can use the hip trust from rogue to stabilize myself correct when doing seated lat pull downs ? Now I will also like to ge the low pulley system but here is the my issue since I will use in the front of the rack I don’t have a bottom cross member to mount to but will like to get the rogue bench prop with the mini feet since is basically a adjustable bottom crossmember. this adjustable crossmember won’t be in line with the upper crossmember of the rack, so will that impact the cable length I will need to order for the low pulley system? If so how will I measure the correct length I will need? Do I need to add a couple of inches?

If I had a 4 post, mounted this attachment the opposite way your still is: small end of this attachment off the front and long end into the middle of the rack. Do you think using leg rollers on the front 2 uprights would provide a proper pull for lat pulls? Or do you think how ever far out the shorter end sticks out would cause it to feel like you are pulling at an angle maybe mid head or something?

      Hey Danny. Thanks for the comment. Functionally it feels pretty similar although there are some pros and cons of each. Loading the REP piece is easier since it's not a vertical load. The Rep piece does require more space though since it adds 27" to your rack. The Rep piece is also cheaper and there is no risk of plate sway due to the guide rod. Both are really good options for the PR-5000. I think it comes down ultimately to budget and the amount of space you can allocate. If you have a bigger budget and space is important, I would go with the Surplus. Otherwise the REP Piece will do very nicely.

    My surplus strength ups high arrived yesterday after waiting for it for two months. It is disappointing. The machining is sloppy with nearly a 1/16" of an inch gap between the uhmw and the bar. It rattles all over the cross piece. The bolt area has no support behind it all. I sent a mail to Jason (the owner) to discuss. At first, I mailed an automated email with a no-reply address without realizing it. When I didn't get a response, I sent it a second time to the correct address. Jason was noticeably upset in his response that I hadn't waited 24 hours for a response. It seems the "no-reply" address did go to him. He offered to send me some tape to fix it. My impression: don't bother with this thing. Rack mounted gliders like the Bully Glyder are a much better option. I personally have that device and it is incredibly well made and smooth. Fits perfectly with no slop. I'm glad I didn't bother to order the ups low or the upgraded pulleys.

    If both were $400 total vs $600, it would be a no brainer. Also I think in the production run it has all plastic/nylon pulleys vs metal. Which for $600 I think the metal pulleys are more appropriate. It is a cool concept and unique. Only downside is I am not sure that I could use it on my flat foot rack without buying another Rogue support beam. Which then limits me to front and back only.

I’ll go to my steel yard and get an off cut 3x3 for $20 that spans the whole width plus the radius of my plates so the loading pin sits outside of rack. Couple hrs in garage having fun and I’ll have something similar. Plus I can make the low row higher up so it’s closer to commercial machines. But if this were cheaper I would have just bought it.

  • @doseofreality100
    @doseofreality100 Před 3 lety +1

    Just went to the site. $660 for both attachments and the cable. While cheaper than a dedicated high/low pulley machine..... you can find one for $1500 or so. Yes that's 3x the price of this setup.... but a dedicated machine will be better. I think this is a great setup. Just not for me. If you're space is about the size of a walk in closet though this would be for you. I've never used let alone seen this thing in person and if someone with limited space asked me how they can get a high/ low pulley setup in their tiny... TINY space I'd recommend this. To everyone else though with space.... I'd say save up a spring for a dedicated hig low pulley machine.... or save up even more and get a QUALITY legitimately commercial rated functional trainer. And if you have the space... a legit cable crossover machine. And if you have the space and money is no object... a cable crossover machine WITH a high/ low pulley setup on one side of said machine. Honestly, if you're space is in your garage, assuming you don't have an itty bitty garage, almost everyone can fit a cable crossover machine in their space. They're only about 3 feet deep and you can store your dumbbells directly underneath it since to use it you'll be standing in front of it anyways. Think if it as a 12-15 foot long dumbbell rack. And you can still hang stuff on the wall behind the crossover machine and have access to it. So while they seem massive.... I think full blown cable crossover machines are actually more practical than any other option.... so long as you have the 12-15 foot space to accommodate the length. Otherwise it's footprint is relatively small. It's just a steel structure that sticks out 3 feet on average from the wall. You can still work underneath it/ between the uprights with ease and have access to the wall you put it up against for wall storage.

    Slightly overpriced, but in regards to being compact, portable and heavy duty, it looks to be a magnificent option if you're prepared to pay up. End of the day, it'll still be way cheaper than most stand alone stack options, while saving space on plate loaded options, space is a premium in the garage/basement etc.
    I find many racks let themselves down in some way come lat attachments
    They're either
    1. Cheaply made and break down eventually
    2. Offer poor ROM
    3. Eat up a ton of space at the back of your rack, thus either extending the footprint of the rack (particularly plate loaded options), or eats up the internal depth of the rack, thus cutting into space where a spotter might stand for benching or something.
    I've looked at many racks with lat attachments but the main flaw I find is the minimal space for a bench spotter, then the other reasons is cables fraying/rubbing and poor ROM being a tall guy, so for the meantime I use bands for tricep work, facepulls and pullovers on my chin up bar and will likely grab a cheap pulley option in the next few weeks to prolong my bands which have copped a beating over the last 15+ months so I can do some light-medium pulldowns on the floor.
    But this type of thing I could definitely get around whenever I upgrade my squat rack. Would allow for a separate stand alone machine or more storage options in my set up instead of dedicating a space for a pulldown
