Used to live in New Hampshire, & I liked the lack of sales & income taxes; however, the tourism taxes, which are a (negative) feature of all restaurants, motels, inns, etc. are pretty stiff, & are charged whether you're a resident or not. Also, New Hampshire township taxes & fees more than make up for the lack of state taxes. New Hampshire is beautiful in the summer & fall, although quite rainy, but it's miserable in the winter.

The average retiree isn't so rich. Florida & Texas are tax havens for the rich, but not the middle class. The perfect tax system for a retiree would be a low property tax, no sales tax, and a progressive income tax that exempts Social Security income plus and an additional retiree exemption, and most retirees don't have to worry about an inheritance tax on either the federal or state levels. The health of a state, that would consider ease of access to competent health care, elderly outcomes, a state where residents have lower rates for smoking, alcoholism, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, etc., and longer longevity. The top 10 healthiest states strongly trend Blue. The 10 unhealthiest are all Red. You name New Hampshire and Tennessee, with New Hampshire being in the top 10 & Tennessee being in the bottom 10. When Tennessee repealed it's 90 year old Hall income tax, it helped the rich but didn't do anything to make the state healthier. Florida & Texas health rankings are middling, with Florida better than Texas. When moving to another state, for the main consideration of having no state income tax, big mistake, also consider moving an area where medical needs can be met. Don't land in a health care desert.
