  • Sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease primarily known for causing dry eyes and mouth, but it can also affect internal organs, leading to complications like Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD). In Sjogren-associated ILD, the immune system mistakenly attacks the lungs, causing inflammation and scarring (fibrosis) of the lung tissues. This results in symptoms such as a chronic dry cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, and chest discomfort. The exact causes of Sjogren's syndrome are not fully understood, but it involves a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests like CT scans, pulmonary function tests, and blood tests to identify specific autoantibodies. Management includes medications to control the underlying autoimmune response and treatments to alleviate lung symptoms.
When Sjogren-associated ILD progresses to severe lung damage and respiratory failure, a bilateral lung transplant may be considered. This surgery involves replacing both diseased lungs with healthy donor lungs. The transplant procedure begins with the patient being placed under general anesthesia. The surgical team removes the damaged lungs through incisions in the chest and replaces them with donor lungs, which are carefully attached to the patient's airways and blood vessels. Post-surgery, patients are monitored in the intensive care unit (ICU) to manage immediate recovery and prevent complications. Recovery includes long-term immunosuppressive therapy to prevent rejection of the new lungs and regular follow-up appointments to monitor lung function. The goal of the transplant is to improve breathing, enhance quality of life, and extend survival for patients with severe ILD caused by Sjogren’s syndrome.
