Hi, The length is not very important. Of course , too short is not gonna work well. This one is about 10 inches long. The diameter is up to you also. But i have big logs ( up 24 inches hard wood ) to split, so i needed a 4 inches. I had the the cone shapped part made at a machine shop and the hole for the shaft. I added a hub that we usually weld on gears. there's a keyway and set screws.
