  • Hi!
This video is a project I made for my Honors: Flourishing class as my final project. In this project I utilized the mediums of video and poetry to demonstrate the positive psychology principles of gratitude and mindfulness.
This poem, the "The Orange" by Wendy Cope, is one of my favorite pieces of writing and has helped me through a lot of issues in my personal life. In my career, my goal is to make positive films that will uplift and connect people, and this serves as a sort of mini ‘teaser’ version of that vision. I believe it deals with the positive psychology practices of both mindfulness and gratitude in subtle, affirming ways.
This process and product benefits me. Watching this video reminds me of the people in my life who make me happy and thankful to be alive. Putting it together was a soothing, joyful experience, and it was a designated time to stop and be mindful of these people and experiences that have brought and continue to bring me joy.
I specifically knew I wanted to do a video project because video production is something I’m passionate about and interested in as my future career. I also wanted to touch on poetry because it has had a big impact on my life and it’s something I see as a very valuable experience.
In their paper “Haiku and Healing: An Empirical Study of Poetry Writing as Therapeutic and Creative Intervention,” Kittredge Stephenson and David H. Rosen said their findings “suggest that narrative writing led to decreases in anxiety and depression, and haiku writing increased creativity and sensitivity to topic.”
The article “Promoting Positive Psychology Using Social Networking Sites: A Study of New College Entrants on Facebook” by Shu-Man Chang, Yung-Hsiu Lin, Chi-Wei Lin, Her-Kun Chang, and Ping Pete Chong focuses primarily on Facebook and other social media sites, but I believe it has similar underlying concepts. Like my project, it also emphasizes social gratitude and the positive effects of that practice.
“Promoting positive traits can have a substantial impact on adolescents’ future development and many positive traits can be cultivated partially by emotional events and social influence.” This study revolved around delivering positive messages to new university entrants through Facebook groups and seeing how they reacted in terms of engagement and positive influence. This study focused on gratitude through a social context and showed measured improvements in happiness levels thanks to these actions.
The primary positive psychology principle this project exhibits is gratitude, but it also covers mindfulness, positive emotions, and positive relationships.
This principle was put into practice through the process of making the project. Additionally, rewatching it makes me smile. Simple as that.
The aim of this ‘positivity plan’ is to increase my own awareness of and thankfulness for the positive people and experiences in my life for which I’m grateful. It's the little things that make life beautiful and worth it.
I hope your day is absolutely chockfull of beautiful little things.
    love,
    Katherine
