      Thank you, just trying to provide a resource for some that have no where else to look. Some of the gurus you find on here are ridiculous and seem more like viking cosplay than anything real and tangible.

    A great video again! I love you reading from the book and backing your words with evidence. It's super informative, and gives a ton of incite on how these traditions came to be! Good job 👏

      Yea I just want to show what we do and why. Some of it is based on history, some is just because, but at least I make the distinction clear.

    Great video on the subject and great examples/references. I agree on your interpretation of swearing upon a sword/shield/ship/horse or other similar items. They are all things you would have depended upon and swearing upon this is "putting them on the line" as collateral to your oath.

    • @northwoodskindred
      @northwoodskindred  Před 2 lety +1

      Perfectly stated, "collateral to your oath" wish I had though of that wording.

    So, as an example, a smith might swear his oath on his anvil. Something he depended on and whose failure carried real consequence. Keep it up, learning lots!

  • @bjornstacy9590
    @bjornstacy9590 Před rokem +1

    Once again nice video. The arm ring you have is called a Torc or Torque and it was popular at least with the Heathens I knew back in the day to use as an oath ring before Vikings came out. So the Torc is actually Celtic in origin, it represented status from what I have read, the higher quality the metal it was made from the higher status of the individual, the Torc became popular in Scandinavia, from what I have read, during the viking age, I know they were used as a status thing not sure if they were used in Oath Swearing back then.

    • @northwoodskindred
      @northwoodskindred  Před rokem

      If they had value, then there were probably oaths sworn on them, but I get what you are saying, in that these are not the same as those that were carried by the gothar or displayed in the temples.

  • @2soon521
    @2soon521 Před rokem +2

    Does it matter what the material is made of for an oath ring my wife is sensitive to most metals so I was thinking of making her one that was leather wrapped with a wire/metal core

    • @northwoodskindred
      @northwoodskindred  Před rokem

      I dont believe the material matters but it should be one that will last. Remeber you can swear an oath an almost any useful object and still be traditional. The ring is just what was used in official procedings, probably because in a lot cases weapons were not allowed in the door.

    • @northwoodskindred

      The big book was "the viking age" vol 1 by Paul B DuChaillu but I f you pick it up I would suggest buying both volumes. Tons of useful information in these books. The small one that I read the story out of is "the Saga of the Jomsvikings" A great and heroic story. I have them and a lot of other great titles in my Amazon store, listed in the description. Hope that helps.

    What was the passage from?

    • @northwoodskindred
      @northwoodskindred  Před 3 měsíci

      I am not sure which passage you are refering to but the book is the "the viking age" by Paul B DuChaillu and it is sort of a detailed refrence to all things known about that era. It was origionally published in 1889 so any new discoveries are not accounted for. Here is the link to both volumes, they are extremely valuable to any norse pagan or viking reinactor.

    I dont have access to these things for oaths, i put it on my personal honor. As for doing an oath in court, i say no. Im not putting my honor at risk in court, i don't trust the gov't enough to put an oath to anything to them.
