    "I rather you have it and don't need it, than to need it and don't have it", I'm not sure where I heard this quote from but that's the approach we take with our children's education. Great video, hits on so many points!

    Great video and perspectives Brit... I remember when I was talking to my husband 6 years ago when we were discussing to start homeschooling... I told him, "I want to make sure if my kids want to be a doctor... they can be a doctor... if he wants to be construction worker he can be a construction worker." It's important that we give them the opportunities beyond what they could get anywhere else. And yes homeschooling is hard... hard doesn't mean bad. I feel like all the hard things in life are the more rewarding ones when you reach the finish line. Love the video Brit!

    Yes! I also feel that, “Homeschool shouldn’t be hard,” completely invalidates the experiences of disabled or neurodivergent educators, and disabled or neurodivergent learners. For some of us, homeschool IS hard a lot of the time, and that’s not because we’re doing something wrong, that’s because we’re up against different challenges than some families.

    Yes! I completely agree - I sometimes hear fellow homeschool moms say they haven't done history or science in years. Or joking about how their 10 year old still cant read but not doing any formal program but how they're learning from minecraft. This really isn't okay to me.

      One of my biggest annoyances with the homeschool community is the "unschooling" community that has twisted the point of unschooling into this strange... "Everything is an education and you cannot tell me otherwise" system. It's, IMO, lazy. I don't care who is offended by that. I am sorry, but no, playing Call of Duty for 6 hours is NOT a good History substitute. Literally recall a mother explaining to someone else asking for advice as a new homeschool mom (was at the start of the pandemic), and she was trying to convince her to unschool by saying things like that "Call of Duty? History! Making a cake? Math, Science and LA!" It was insane to me. Some of those are excellent additions to an education, they make fantastic supplements. But that's it... a supplement, not the main curriculum!

    I think we all need to do what is right for each child God has given us. The goals and methods to get there are different for each child so I wouldn’t exactly say these things are “bad” for homeschoolers in general. The beauty of homeschooling is the freedom to meet each student where they are and move them forward in progress- that journey is going to look different for each child. These things may be “bad” for you but they aren’t necessarily bad for others ❤
    You are doing a phenomenal job with your daughter!

    Preach it girl! Homeschooling is hard. It’s good to acknowledge that and have support from other homeschoolers, rather than hear “well, you’re doing something wrong… focus on the relationship… don’t expect so much.” All that advice can be so bad and tear us down, so thanks for exposing this bad advice.

    🎉#1 video of 2024 ❤!!! This is the best homeschool video I have seen in months. I am so over all the fluff on some channels. Well said I love everything about this video and it needed to be said. Every child deserves to be provided the foundation if they decide they want to go to college. We are homeschooling for college and I am standing firm on that, he can feel free to do as he pleases thereafter but our homeschool is for a college bound student and we have fun while doing it but have structure with academics. Great job Brittany!! ❤

    Being told that curriculums that are teacher intensive should be avoided. I never understood that. When your child has no knowledge of the concept of time, money, reading, math etc, everything is teacher intensive they need to be taught. All About Reading and Math with Confidence are both considered "teacher intensive," but they build such a solid foundation.

    Love this! You’ve encouraged me to embrace the fact that using traditional curriculum and testing is OKAY! When we first started I felt like I needed to relax and just go with the flow..and it did not work for me or my children. We’re in our third year now and I feel so much more confident in the way our homeschool runs. I like the “boring” traditional curriculums for math and language arts, and I like testing. It helps me see where my kids are and what I need to focus on to help them. And like you said, there is still so much time in the day to pursue those life skills and free play!

    I thought something was wrong with my thinking when I felt the same concerns you’ve expressed about advice in the community.
    I honestly believe that some of the advice that a certain curriculum’s level may be too advanced is rooted in our lack of training in how to deliver/teach the material. Yes, there are children whose learning style requires specific texts, but for the most part, kids will be fine if we just keep at it and not run at the first sign of struggle. Idk. Some people make it seem like homeschool should be gentle and offer no type of challenge to kids. We praise our kids when they grasp a material fast but quickly look for errors in the curriculum when the material takes some work for those same kids.

    I love this. Thank you so much. I have been paralyzed in this new culture of "shouldn't be hard." Brittany, I stumbled across your channel and I'm SO GLAD I did! Recently I've been part of a homeschool community of primarily relaxed homeschoolers, and I hear this type of advice frequently. I've begun to question my philosophy of homeschool because of it. My philosophy has been to give my kids MORE opportunities, not less. I was homeschooled and was not given a good education in some areas and it set me back. I want better for my kids, but I've been told by a relaxed homeschool mom that I'm "projecting" my fears onto my kids. I really needed to hear your story today! I loved your analogy about it taking time to see the fruit! I also appreciate you saying we can teach our kids housework AND give them a good education. It doesn't have to be one or the other! It's good to hear that I'm not doing something wrong if it's hard. Thank you for sharing! I don't feel so alone anymore!

    Yup, similar sentiments I share with my high school planning video last year. Every time I mention preparing my children for higher education, I get mass unfollows, it’s bizarre to me. I want to prepare them for all the possibilities, not what they claim to want right now. That and as someone with kiddos that are twice exceptional, I will never be ok with the phrase, “no such thing as behind.” Just no …like I shared before, dyslexia for example, will not disappear by wishing it away. Early intervention can be so important whenever possible. Ok, rant over. Thank you for your words 🫶🏽

    @alisonh4424 Před 4 měsíci +8

    I agree mostly, and I think the hard thing is when we put things out on videos like this or the ones you are referring to we often paint with a broad brush. I want to do what is necessary to get my kids to be the best they can be and have the most options open to them as adults. Right now that means I have my 11th grader dual enrolled in college and he will finish high school with 2.5 years towards his degree completed in credits earned. Right now it means I am teaching my 7 year old Latin and he’s also doing 4th grade math. But it also means I make space for my 13 year old who has a lot of challenges mental health and learning disabilities that make it so we have to celebrate small wins and for him that might mean he isn’t writing a paragraph in middle school, we are still working on writing a simple sentence with excellence. It can be hard for me to hear it’s my job to prepare him for college because I’m working really hard to make sure he is ready to be a literate member of society and while I want all doors open to him and I’m working with that goal in mind, it won’t be “easy” or even the same hard as it was for his brothers and other people instead it may take extra years and it definitely won’t be without extra effort on both my part and his. I share this because I want people to see the honest side to this video and also know that it’s ok to also feel the pushback towards the statements you made if you have a learner that has challenges outside the typical box.
    With that said… Is homeschooling easy, no way. It’s much more difficult than when I was a classroom teacher in the public school system for 18 years but it is worth it.

      ❤ you are doing a great job. I even mentioned on a reply to a comment that I failed my daughter in math last year. We are doing somewhat better at it and a little ahead now but these kids aren’t cookie cutters. I am not going to ignore a subject because it isn’t easy but I am not going to be unrealistic. She may get up to geometry or algebra 2 in high school and that is ok. She is brilliant in many other ways. Not every kid should be in college and that is not a set up for failure.

    You're definitely my homeschool mom soul-sister!! I 100% agree with each part of your rant. 😊 As a homeschool graduate, it's especially concerning to me that some of this bad advice is out there because I've seen the results of the families who followed it back in the '90s. Some of those kids are now "stuck" in jobs that they really want to change, but it's taking a lot of work to go back and get the education they need to switch careers or just survive at life.

    My daughter has multiple disabilities. One of our reasons for homeschooling is that the public school was clear that they wouldn't teach her history, foreign language, science, art, civics, or geography unless it was to meet an IEP goal. Disabled children have the right to have access to a robust education. All Americans should know how the country works. We had to start out small my child didn't understand leaving the state vs leaving the country but we kept up with it and now she's learned so many things.
    TBH oftentimes when parents say they won't teach their kid this or that it comes down to the parent finding it boring or they aren't good at it so they've decided their kids "just aren't math-minded". I have accepted that I might have to outsource some subjects at some point and we're okay with that.
    I feel like Religious parents who shelter their kids from topics like evolution or that the earth is billions of years old - in a way create what they were trying to avoid. Their child gets to college and they are suddenly swamped with hundreds of new ideas. If they were prepared it wouldn't be such a culture shock. The response of the parents is to be like our kids shouldn't go to college.

    I feel some of the homeschooling advice you refer to as bad is not always, for example, you mention homeschooling parents choosing not to teach ‘intensive’ writing, my mind goes straight to IEW. Those parents, myself included perhaps feel that teaching formal writing in a very structured way like IEW isn’t their goal or desire. To each their own, but I don’t want that real structure and formality in writing, imo it’s not good. But is better to do much later down the line and can he taught well and effectively. I hear that too avoiding ‘intensive writing, and I agree with it, so perhaps you feel it’s bad advice because you aren’t understanding these views, it’s not parents don’t have desires and goals for writing for their kids, but to delay that teaching and for very good reason. Im sure those parents have every desire for their child to be effective writers, but writing effectively is not only achieved via one route of intensive writing. The beauty of homeschooling is to meet the child where they are and help them, go slow if they need to, and so when they say there’s no behind, I don’t believe it’s the way you are to taking it, they don’t mean, ah don’t worry, they mean that child is where they are, to stop comparing with where they should be but keep working and pressing forward. I hope my comment is taken as it’s intended, and I do enjoy your content. While I agree with some of what you say here, just some things I feel you were have referred isn’t understood, clear examples of the intensive writing and behind reference.

    • @brittanyolga
      @brittanyolga  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I think you may have misunderstood what I was saying. I was referring to omitting subjects all together such as writing or higher levels of math because we as parents feels our children do not need that knowledge in general because we typically do not use those skills daily as adults. I feel like timing, how, and when you teach writing etc is totally up to parents family etc. I love IEW but I do not believe it is the writing course for all homeschoolers.❤️

    Agree so much! I call tough topics, in school/life, the law of first exposures. It is our job to teach our kids difficult topics in the safety of our home and build a safe place to hash it out and learn where they stand under the morals and values they have been raised around. Better hear it from me than someone else. I never want my kids to think I hid stuff from them or lied to them because I didn’t think they could handle it. That seems pretty demeaning. All age/maturity appropriate, for the child, of course.

    Exactly! I always have to tell my first grader that even though she feels her math is hard, she can do it. I always remind her how far she's come since she started and how she thought "such and such" was hard at the time, but now she finds it easy. We have to stay away from shying away from things that seem hard (or even cause tears), because it sets our kids up for failure. We push through the hard and uncomfortable and come out with grit and perseverance on the other side.

    I literally just was thinking the same thing. I have been in the homeschooling community a long time. But there is a switch - and it just doesn't sit well with me. I want to teach her everything, even the tough things so she can be the best well rounded individual out in the world. Learning about something won't make you that thing you are learning about - it gives them the power of independence. As for behind - my daughter is - not because of anything we can control - she has so much stacked to make it hard for her but we continue to work on it. I don't get to just throw up my hands and say "Oh well she is medically fragile with learning disabilities and autism - but that is okay." - No... it's not. She is doing this on her time which is fine - but I can not let her stay in that spot. Thank you for being you. You have inspired me to find new curriculum for her and move forward.

    Oooh I loved this topic and your insights!! I have a 4th and 1st grader and I think it’s always good to look forward so you can backwards plan on where you hope to be in MS and HS.
    I really appreciated your thoughts on writing and introducing the “difficult” subjects. While we may want to avoid them, our kids will hear about them eventually-don’t we want to be the first to tell them about it so we can explain it and our own worldview on the subject?
    Really enjoy your channel-I got hooked on your IEW week video (we currently use EIW, but your video reminded me of how I learned to write and I really like the structured approach. Your daughter was so adorable in that video!!

    Definitely agree censoring doesn’t help anyone! Making a decision for your kid is not teaching them critical thinking.
    I’m in thinking about homeschooling mode and I’ve always had a hard time wrapping my head around how so many people homeschool when not all the parents were necessarily good at school. It can’t be that much worse than public school now though with 66% below acceptable reading levels in 4th and 8th grade.

    THANK YOU! I really appreciate this video and agree entirely! Homeschooling (and teaching in general) is hard and it's supposed to be!! I really appreciate your videos because I completely agree with the need to provide a rigorous education and I don't think I've met any other homeschoolers yet that feel that way. We're only at the very beginning of our homeschool journey, currently doing preschool with my oldest and starting Kindergarten this Summer, so I'm not sure how far I will go with homeschooling BUT I know that a big thing for homeschoolers in our area, is that the local community college offers dual enrollment options for high schoolers, and they can basically graduate "high school" with an associate's degree. If I homeschool through high school I think this is the path I would choose. I don't think my daughters NEED to go to college, but I think it would just make the most sense both financially and experience wise to set them up for any future option they choose. Just an option to consider! Keep up the great content!

    I think there's a person out there who needs to hear that "bad" advice. I know the "there's no such thing as behind" helped me at one point. I was so focused on keeping up with grade level that I was stressing myself out and making my kid unhappy. Hearing that he wasn't behind and could go at his own pace became a mantra for me. I was able to take things much slower and in bite-sized pieces, which made school more enjoyable for everyone.
    All that said, we did get to a point where I realized he needed outside help as he wasn't progressing as I thought he should. The focus became progressing at HIS pace rather progressing at the pace as determined by the state. One of the things I like about homeschooling is that my kids can learn different subjects at different grade levels. My 6 year old is doing 2nd grade math, 1st grade reading, and kindergarten culture work. My 5 year old is doing kindergarten math, 1st grade reading, and kindergarten culture work. Eventually, both of my kids will be at or above grade level for all subjects, but the pressure is off me trying to keep up with the state. The focus is on a rigorous education for each individual child, whatever that may look like.

    So good! I understand why you keep taking about writing. My son is also heading to 7th grade, and I’ve been super focused on it for the past 2 years. It’s been stressful and time consuming on my part (he does have special needs). But as my job relies heavily on writing skills, I see the need for it, as we all will have to communicate in writing, no matter our jobs. All the time, I come across adults who can’t write well at all, and that’s sad.

    I agree with everything you are saying and it is so refreshing to hear. I feel terrible everytime I read something like "I have been unschooling and my ten year old doesnt know the alphabet because he has never shown an interest" how much time has been lost that that child could be learning! I am so glad I started with a traditional academic approach in kindergarten so I dont have to break the news to a teenager that oops, you never asked to learn algebra so i just never taught you. Its our job as parents to make sure our kids get an education, its not up to our kids to come to us and ask to learn subjects before we introduce them.

    OH MY GOODNESS, YES!!! I get so frustrated in my homeschool groups on Facebook every single time I hear a parent say something like, "We're not doing a second language..." or "We're not worrying about anything beyond Algebra..... BECAUSE.... my child is not college bound!" UNLESS the child has serious handicaps, why assume they are not college bound? I feel like the parents are making these choices for their child and not allowing their child to make these choices.
    Whether or not my children attend college, join a trade school, or jump right into the workforce, my aim is to give them an education based on them going into college. Why? Am I forcing college on them? Absolutely not! BUT, if they decide they WANT to attend college, they should not suffer because -I- did not feel like preparing them for college! It's so infuriating. I always respond with, "I'd reconsider just in case they decide to go to college eventually!"

    I'll get heat for this, but I am sick of people saying anything along the lines of "if you aren't having fun, you're doing it wrong". Should it be like pulling teeth unmedicated? No. But not everything needs to be a thrilling joy ride, either. Some things are just hard, period. The "fun" or enjoyment comes from the feeling of accomplishment from overcoming something hard. I want my children to work hard and also be able to focus, not grow up with an "app brain" that gets bored after 10 seconds.

    Homeschooling is hard!! Especially when you are homeschooling neurodivergent children. I’ve successfully homeschooled 6 children for 12 years with 2 graduates (one was autistic). They were both college ready, but decided to become entrepreneurs instead. I did have to slow waaayyyy down because of his learning disabilities. It gave me peace of mind to be able to say “he’s not behind” but really we just took it slowly but surely, because we homeschool year round. 😊 Now he is a graphic designer, photographer, and has a gaming channel. I now have 4 children I am homeschooling with my oldest daughter having mild dyslexia, youngest son with autism, & my youngest daughter with type 1 diabetes. All of them are creative and we approach our education differently than most (creative arts with CM), BUT they are all college ready/bound to give them that opportunity. ❤ And yes, we do teach writing…creative and structured!!! 😂😂

    So true!! We have 1 high school graduate and one that graduates this year and then 6 more under them. You need know what they are going to do in life. My job is to beat prepare them for whatever God calls them to do. Our oldest was planning on majoring in nursing and has now changed to English with thoughts of law school. I am so glad I didn't limit her English classes in high school and that she learned logic. We allow some flexibility with electives ( our 3rd is very artistic so she is doing lots of art, our first did a lot of music, our 2nd did more critical thinking). But we aim high for our kids!

  • @Carazona
    @Carazona Před 4 měsíci +7

    See, I don’t know - is a “proper and well rounded education” based on the school model? Because I chose not to go with that for a reason. I’m not trying to replicate their curriculum because I don’t agree with it. Have you looked into who made it and why? What they based our public school model on and why? When you say behind, behind who?? We aren’t teaching to an arbitrary state standardized test because our kids are outside of that system entirely. Yes as they grow and develop their passions and talents they may need other skills and knowledge and I’ll explain that when they’re getting to that age, but I sincerely HOPE none of them choose college and start their young adult lives off in mountains of student loan debt for some degree that may not even be useful someday because the world changes so fast.
    And I absolutely will NOT teach my children evolution. That’s one of the reasons I chose not to send them to school.
    I remember close to nothing I learned in my formal school education except how bullied I was. I can recite the 50 states in alphabetical order or tell you all the planets (but even that - they took one off since then). I can tell you about chlorophyll and photosynthesis but none of that is paying my bills now.
    I homeschool for the home part, not the school part.
    And no I don’t unschool. I follow our states guidelines for homeschooling and my kids COULD fall right into the grade they’d be in if they had to be placed in school. But I’m not forcing them through these things to meet some goal we don’t even need to worry about because we don’t subscribe to the school system.

    We just graduated our oldest from our homeschool. Been homeschooling since she was in the 2nd grade and have 3 more children ranging from 3rd grade to 12th this year. I agree with this video for the most part, but it is so important that parents seek the Lord's wisdom and guidance before referring to internet influencers to guide their homeschool. Doing what some stranger says you can and should do can place an unnecessary burden that the Lord never intended for you to bear. I'm sure most Christian influencers would agree with that, but speaking from experience, sometimes new homeschool moms are searching the internet to guide them when in reality, each child and family is created so unique by the Lord. Maybe in this season of life, one mom needs to take a path you call bad advice, and can't "have it all" because time is not on her side. We had two babies within the first several years of homeschooling. There was no way I could do it all, and life skills actually WERE a big majority of our homeschool in that time. However, on the flip side, while we do need to give ourself grace at times, we have to be careful that we're not just being blatantly lazy or negligent. I think a healthy balance is to take stock of your own life and things that are on your plate in any given season of life, prayerfully asking the Lord for wisdom and guidance, and being transparent with the people in your life so they can help hold you accountable if you're slacking off or encourage you when you just need to take a breather.
