  • Merry Christmas to all! This topic comes directly from our Instagram page. The topic was USS Salem or USS New Jersey and who would you pick? I took it a step further and pitted Jersey against Newport News. However, the armament was for their time in the 1960’s. Enjoy, like, comment, and share! Thanks as always!

The accuracy of New Jersey's 16" batteries was legendary, sir, plus the redundancy of the fire control was also top notch as 5" gun directors could be used if needed to counter damage, so I have to say that there is no contest here as New Jersey would shoot 9 and land 9 upon poor Newport News with devastating results then if there was a floating hulk, we'd turn it into Swiss cheese with our 5" batteries

Was on the Kennedy and we came out of the yards in 74 and parked at pier 7 in Norfolk. On the other side was the News. One beautiful ship. Of course nothing can beat the beauty of the Iowa class battle wagons. Would have given my eye teeth to have served on either one.

The two ships would be like a heavyweight boxer versus a lightweight boxer. The lightweight guy might get a few lucky hits in and do some damage early on but won't last in a long fight. Only take a couple of heavy hits. Maybe take on water or loose a turret and the advantages slip gradually away.

I would agree with Mr. Spears that New Jersey has the advantage, but Newport News could draw blood if allowed to get too close. New Jersey's armored belt would protect her vitals but fire control positions are vulnerable as was demonstrated in many W.W.# 2 naval battles. Merry Christmas to you and thank you for your video presentations.

I'm sorry, but you really don't know much about Iowa class battleships, how they operated, or the terminal effectiveness of her main battery not to mention her armor protection scheme. I applaud the premise behind this video but you should do a lot more research before putting something like this out there.

Well, enlighten me as to what I don’t know about them and missed in this video. I am willing to learn. I am sometimes mistaken in some of my comments, which does happen. But I know how effective the main batteries on both ships are. I also know the differences in their armor and I know that paper equations don’t always add up in real life encounters. So lay it out for me here and let’s see what you know better than I do and let’s make some corrections.

@@iowaclassbattleships447 The New Jersey has a 6 mile range advantage over the Newport News; the New Jersey would not need to "fishtail" or maneuver wildly to maintain plot on Newport News; the guns of the Newport News could not penetrate the belt armor of New Jersey at anything greater than point blank range (and even then it's doubtful) and could not penetrate her deck armor at any range whereas the New Jersey could penetrate any armor on the Newport News at any range. The idea that only turret 3 could be brought to bear or that it might "shoot it's own deck crane off" is just laughable. The hit probability of the 16 inch gun at max range against a target the size of Newport News is about 1.5% which means that in less than 5 minutes, the New Jersey is likely to score at least one hit on the Newport News and one hit is enough to severely damage the ship. Or the New Jersey could choose to risk non-critical damage and close to 15 miles and annihilate the Newport News in about 3-4 minutes. The Newport News was never designed to handle an Iowa class battleship nor would it be able to.

I'll say new jersey but don't count the newport news out let's say the the new jersey is heavier armor big guns both can do 33 knots the us news can unload 10 rounds 8in a minute at 330 pds per round the us new jersey can unload 2 16in rounds per at 2700 pds a minute o would say 95% us new jersey wins but the newport news can service rendered the new jersey if it landed a lucky shoot but highly unlikely would it sink the new jersey but the the new jersey could easily sink the newport news
