Not sure where to start. First, absolutely amazing job, Daniel. I couldn't hope for someone to do a better job. And thank you Jay, for sharing the story of its restoration. I can add a little to it's history. This was my mother's car. It's the car I learned how to drive in, back in 1975 in Norfolk, Nebraska. Mom bought it sometime around 1970, I think. She just adored this car, and drove it a lot. So did I, to school, work, cruising Main Street whenever I got the chance. It was freezing cold in the winter with the drafty plastic slide windows and no heater, and if you got caught in the rain, you were pretty wet by the time you got home. I knocked the door off it once, backing it out of the garage. Only time I ever saw my Mom cry. After Mom got older, it sat in her garage covered with a tarp for several decades. My brother rescued it, got it running again and fixed some things and sold it. Anyway, just wanted to say how glad the whole family is that Daniel made her good as new again. ~Cherie (Nordeen) Mathison

This truly is amazing how Daniel was actually able to uplift two Mother's by restoring this MG "A"! How offen is it that a young Man of 15 is able to inspire two Mother´s with one car? It warms my heart knowing the Nordeen family saw this episode and the passion Daniel has given to the families old car. Thank you Jay for sharing perhaps one of your best car stories of all time!

I recently saw an expert on tv, who teaches people how to avoid
having their cars stolen.
He said that most car thieves nowadays have NO idea how to drive a manual transmission.
They should teach stick in
“car-theft school”!
I'm amazed his accent is so thick still, after all these years in the U.S. Some people lose accents quickly, some don't. I was born in England and left at age 4, no accent. Certainly he's proved he's very capable in marshaling the necessary experts. 🙂 I suspect his stock with the other sex has risen sharply too! Very likely a great catch for some company in the automotive world, as most people his age have zero experience with older engineering and thus don't see things that same way.
This is one of the best episodes I've seen, Daniel has that quiet confidence and intelligence that's very likeable, it was funny when he asked Jay if he could drive stick and Jay thought so too. The photo of him and his mum was touching and sad that he lost her at such a young age. Not many guests connect with Jay like he did, hope we see him on again.

Probably the most well spoken, sincerely genuine and charming guest that Jay's ever had. Makes me hopeful for the younger generation that doesn't seem interested in anything analog or mechanical. Very cool.
@Mck Idyl Their school system emphasizes language and communication...most English kids graduate at 16, and either go in to a job-trade, or go to college, and graduate by age 20....We should be ashamed at our pathetic USA educational system!

Hello there! This was my Grammie Char's car in Norfolk, NE. She loved that car. Their youngest daughter, my aunt, learned to drive in it. As a child I remember going for short rides around town; it was great fun! My aunt, uncle and mother would have the crazy stories referred to here😄 Glad to see it has gotten new life and looks absolutely fantastic! Grammie would be over the moon.😊
I am so glad you caught this episode Carly. Hopefully Daniel reaches out to you and gives you a ride down memory lane. It would be awesome to hear that he went to Norfolk this summer and shared your Grammie´s MG "A" with the whole family.
I was about to mention this! I remembering seeing a very similar mustard yellow MG when we could go up to norfolk on hwy81. If you don't mind me asking, was this car always parked under an awning or carport in a small town south of Norfolk, on the east side of the highway? Tarnov maybe? We knew somebody drove it semi-regularly, because sometimes it would be in their driveway or not there.
My ma worked in York, and she had to go up to Norfolk a couple times a month for her job and we usually tagged along with her. It's a long drive (for little kids anyway), so we had landmarks to know how close we were to Norfolk. That odd little British car was one of them.
Geez, I hadn't thought about those road trips in 20 years...even if that wasn't her car it's still kind of cool.
@@jonathonschram3429 I am checking with my mom... Doesn't seem like it would've been the same car. I think my grandma had it parked in their garage the majority of the time in Norfolk. But you never know. I could be wrong!
I think Mom bought this car around 1970 or so. Not sure who she bought it from, but if you recall seeing it on your way through Norfolk before that, it could have been at the previous owner's place. As far as I know, this was the only mustard yellow MG around town back then.
@Cherie Mathison Must have been a different car then; as this would have been the mid-to-late 90's. I'll have to ask my brother sometime, as I'm not even sure it was Tarnov. Just a weird coincidence in a fairly small geographical area I guess. Glad your grandma's MG got a second lease on life!
The owner fits that stereotype of the understated, polite Englishman, in a very positive way, and a degree from Cambridge as well. The pride of ownership and accomplishment comes through in a subtle manner, one of your best guests and episodes. Gem of a find.
Daniel is young Jay Leno! There is a definite, car-geeky connection between these two - much more than the usual car-mad lot that Jay interviews. It's really funny!

Jay Leno is a national treasure. He is not only a car guru but a really nice person, exhibiting the same genuine enthusiasm for cars like this as he would if it was a Lemans winning GT-40 Ford.
Smart move by his father at such a difficult time for his 15 yo son. Probably encouraged his drive to become a mechanical engineer. He did a great job restoring it and Jay did a great interview with him. I generally like Jay’s car episodes more than the Tonight show interviews. Nice episode.

“The ignorance of the first person to ever restore a car…” That’s true wisdom that can only be gained through the restoration of a car!
I tried restoring a 1986 Jaguar XJS (I thought the car was perfect when I bought it). I ran out of time to restore it, learned a lot, I wish I had another opportunity.
This guy is wise beyond his years really.
"The ignorance of the first person to ever restore a car."?? Nonsense. No need to be ignorant. We have language, writing, and books, and now digital information, so we don't have to learn the hard way. We learn from the mistakes of the people that did it before us. Before I began rebuilding an engine for the first time, around 1972, I acquired the manufacturer's official service manual, plus half a dozen other books on how to restore that particular engine, as well as engines in general, and before I took anything apart, I read the relevant section of the books, over and over until I had the info fixed i my mind. It prevented me from making a lot of mistakes which I would have otherwise made. Although not all the books were totally accurate either. But I never took the word of one book. If one book said to do something one way, I made sure I read at least 2 other books on how to do it.
For sure! I look back to some of the parts I destroyed from my ignorance of not knowing how to take something apart. Crazy rare stuff I was messing with at a young age and not understanding. Makes me sick to think about it. It is incredible how much you learn and the ability to work on something you have never seen before and get it right the first time. Takes many mistakes to get to that point. This kid will get there it looks like
@@soilmanted that;s why they say..as the old saying goes..."experience is the best teacher". No book is going to teach you everything about restoring a whole car. For sure restoring each car after your first one you will get better at it each time..no matter how many books you read before diving into your first restore. As each old car is different and in different conditions there's no book or school that can teach you everything you need to know about everything you encounter, or if the car's worth it. Your ignorant if you think a book will teach you about everything you encounter on a restore, same with engineering, same with being a doctor, etc.
Jay, been watching you for years. This is one of the best interviews. You're such a relaxed wiz and great entertainer. Daniel, his car, his story, so compelling to hear. And he kept right up with you. Great combo. Thanks for making it happen.

One of the best owner/guests that Jay has had on. You could sense the instant friendship and mutual respect. Brought back memories of my MG's from my youth. At 18 I had a 68 midget. at 30 I had a 67 MGB GT. Then the kids showed up and I replaced the MG with a Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon. I miss all 3 of those cars.

I find it amazing how Jay can have one of the most expensive car collections in the world yet still not be a total car snob/purist. I know he likes cars with stories, but I figured that was mainly racing stories and pedigree of ownership, but this story is equally impressive and interesting.
Of all the episodes I've watched, this has to be the most personal, old friend type of interview. Nice to see Jay take a shine to Daniel. I see a job offer coming.

I did a partial restoration on my MG Midget in college & it was a joy to drive. As for the word "Roadster" it goes back to the 1800s to describe a horse that was comfortable to ride a distance on a road. Yet today it is the equivalent of the word "Hotrod": talk to 10 different people & you will get 10 different definitions. ;)

His comment about driving LA to Monterrey calls back my first post-teen car an MG TC which I got running at age 19. My heart's desire in British racing green. Finally proudly drove it down 101 Palo Alto to Long Beach with no need for AAA. Sadly the adventure ended being rearended by a pink T bird at a stop light. Insurance company wrote off the car as totalled and it was gone. Your episode brings back the joy of cruising with the wind in my face those many years ago. Thank you both.

I admire Daniel's poise and composure. Were I ever to meet Jay Leno in person, I would likely stammer and stumble and make things awkward. (But I'd still be thrilled to have him drive my car.)

My best friend Jim and I as high school juniors 50 years ago bought WELL used little British sports cars. His was a 62’ Austin Healey sprite, mine was a 69’ TR6. Both needed lots of work that we helped each other with. The same as the young man with his MG. It’s amazing how those sports cars affected our entire lives and career paths. As old men Jim and I again have the cars of our youth.
It looks like this MG help forge, a mechanical engineer, and a fine young man.

Great car, great guest. This is where Jay's show really shines...not with million dollar cars of Hollywood celebrities. My uncle had an MGA, and I think it was a '58, as I recall. They are so cool.
Confluence of young man, machine, and story line make for a sentimental favorite among Leno’s Garage videos.
One of the best episodes! I can so identify with the mistakes you make when you start messing about with cars, as I did at 10 or so. I cringe when I think of the bodges and the damage. I thought bolts had to be graunched up as tight as they could be, for instance, and then was surprised when they broke.
I was quite past 20yo before I found out there was such a thing as a torque wrench heh, but I went by touch cross pattern until it felt right for headbolts for example. Never broke anything but I always used random crap tools borrowed here and there. One car I still remember "fondly" was a ford fiesta that needed carb adjustment to start, then again as soon as it got to temp, had the screwdriver ready in my lap at all times as it usually needed adjustment every 10-20min. Great car to pick up chicks in lol, ugly as fugg rustbucket.

Wow, this was fantastic. Dan's going places. He couldn't have been more comfortable talking with Jay and really did a great job telling us everything about this car. The story of his mother brought on a few tears as well. These are the stories we truly come for.

What a pleasing and eloquent young man. Thank you Jay, for featuring both him and the car. When I was high school age I knew a young man a few years older that owned an MGA. After one ride in it, I was in love. That car was a gutsy performer for one that had such a small engine and I must say, it was a thrill to ride in.
Sad to say I have never owned one but I have never forgotten how sporty and fun it was to ride in it.

Jay, this is without question one of your best videos. Daniel is an absolute gem. As is his 'A' and your presentation. The backstory with his mom is too touching. Did you catch in passing his reference to being in the 'T' club and restoring a TC? That merited a follow up even though it was off point of the A. So ... if I weren't retired seven years ... if I was still in the working world with the global E&C company I was with and needed an ME or someone with ME training even if not working in an ME role, I'd hire Daniel in a heartbeat.

Glad to see you appreciate what is a true American classic. My MGA story is similar to Daniels'. I found mine behind a dorm at Hillsdale College and made payments on the one hundred fifty dollar cost. I used a coke case for a seat to drive it the mile and a half home and listened with trepidation to the motor which sounded like a hammer mill.
I began taking the motor out the next day so my brother or buddies wouldn't hot rod and blow the engine up. I realized that the farm garage would not be the best place rebuild the motor so I went and talked to the high school guidance counselor (I was soon to start my freshman year)about switching some courses for auto shop. He gave me hell for doing something that would screw up my college prep agenda but acquiesced and so that's how the motor got rebuilt.
I didn't get it road worthy by the summer of '69' so I bought a 48 Chrysler New Yorker to get me by(another story).By the following spring it was on the road and then the real spending began. When you are young you don't rehab on contingency rather on it works now how far can I go until I really have to pay to fix it correctly. So I drove it
winter and summer for the next two years with a crappy rag top and no side curtains; it did have a good heater and I a horse hide coat with muskrat collar and a very tolerant girlfriend who would get out and push at stop signs. Every time I let someone drive the car I would have to replace the head gasket because I had the block surfaced but not the head. In the summer of 72 a friend and I decided to drive to Boston by way of New York. We spent one night there sleeping in the car(two terrified farm boys)we headed north after about 18 trips across the George Washington Bridge at about fifty cents a pop
As soon as we saw Boston I knew we needed to get to the top of Dorchester Heights which is when I found out that first gear would soon need serious attention $. We hung out, slept in the gardens and the commons, got robbed a couple times, panhandle and drank bottles of milk from porchsteps for about a week and decided to head back to Michigan. We were going along quite well as far as gas and mechanics until a slight hill in Leominster Mass. when I heard a clunk and watched in the rear view mirror as a steady stream of fluid wetted the road. The crank bolt had come out and turned a fan blade ninety degrees into the radiator. We got to a nearby gas station and called a scrap yard who said they had a radiator for that car for fifteen dollars but would closing in ten minutes and wouldn't open until Monday at 7 am. My buddy didn't want to wait even though I had the money for the part and the tools to make the repair and he was afraid to hitchhike alone. So we spent the next two and a half days on the road with sleeping bags and other duffle in some of the most torrential rain storms I've ever seen; the bags got so wet and heavy we threw them away. Tuesday afternoon we made Toledo I called my father to pick us up and when he got there I told him all my plans to pick up the car. My father by nature was not a "no uncertain terms" kind of guy, most everything with him had some degree of negotiation, but not that car. He talked about JCWhitney and wire wheels and the general nickel and dime bleed out that car seemed to be and that was because "those cars are a dime a dozen". That was when I was 18,when was in my 30s I thought I should have another so I started looking and couldn't find anything that was worth the asking or within a reasonable distance. Finally at age fifty-eight I found one nearby(after buying my wife an 81 Mercedes 380sl in an earlier escapade, another story)The car is 1960 MGA with clean frame,reasonable amateur paint job,a new interior (the part I hate to spend big bucks on),new tires and it ran like crap(that's the part I can deal with). The kicker was that he needed the money for a BMW coupe that his wife wouldn't let him get unless the MGA disappeared. His next move was to ship it to ship it to the chec Republic because most of the MGA was exported to the states.
This is almost like the first car I fell in love with, and with friends, restored...A 1962 Morgan +4. The car was built in Malvern Links, England. I dealt with them quite a bit for parts and advice and they were always gentlemen and generous...

A very impressive and thoughtful interview, Jay. I loved Daniel's intelligence and his very mature way of being in the world. Thanks for not rushing through this interview. That said, this is the first time we have watched an episode of Jay Leno's Garage. I lived in Burbank from age 12 to 39. We lived off Victory Boulevard between Providencia and Elmwood at 242 West Cedar Avenue. I went to Jordan Jr. High and John Burroughs High School, with a detour that took me to Hayward, California, where I attended a very tough high school in 1965. I was furious with my father for moving us the Bay Area, and thankful for it later. I needed the experience that Sunset High provided regarding a more deverse student population.
Daniel Harrison impressed us a great deal. A very intelligent young man. We were thrilled for him. You're a class act, Jay. Yours, Nick and Mike Campbell, Atascadero, California.

A) It was Phil Hill that set the land speed record.
B) Mickey Rooney did a movie in the early '50s "Drive A Crooked Road" which is out on DVD. He played a mechanic working at Hollywood Sports Cars and some of it was filmed at Hollywood Sports Cars if you're curious what the place looked like.
