    You helped me out!!!! I'm doing all wheel drive later in my 92 civic hatchback. For now, I need to use the transmission without a transaxle for the header to clear the tunnel until I got turbo AWD. without knowing the plug for the transaxle I would have had to buy another transmission. Thanks for having done the work and putting in the part number.

    I passed up on a clean 4wd element with low miles and a good price because I didn't want the 4wd. I was under the impression that the 4wd element was completely different version vs the 2wd. Now I'm kicking myself.

      Yeah and now everybody and their brother is using them to make AWD honda drag cars and the AWD drive train is through the roof for used setups... kick again poor fella. I'm gonna follow you around and do what you don't. :D

      Kick on.... I added 4WD Elements to my search this spring after seeing how simple it was to downgrade and thus had more to choose from. Just performed this work on my '05 E and now I have fully functional 4WD parts for some other time should I ever decide to reverse the change. Everything just bolts back on.

    Did the same thing to my 2000 CRV automatic. I left the half shafts on the rear wheels. Then I simply took off the two outboard CV joint boots, and pulled the joints apart. Just clean out the grease from the existing axle shafts and leave them in place.

  • @ct4cf
    @ct4cf Před 8 lety +1

    I enjoyed it. It was a good, clean, professional, well thought out technique. I wonder what you could do with Elements with these conversions:
    1. an EPS (electric power steering) rack and pinion, (modernizes by eliminating the accessory belt drive, pump, reservoir, all hydraulic hoses, weight, complexity and numerous failure points, sets the vehicle up for alternative drive lines and frees up the existing drive line and available power)
    2. Li-ON / Super-capacitor replacement battery (modernizes by eliminating weight, increasing available stored energy, lengthens life expectancy and set vehicle up for other electrification)
    3. electric water pump conversion, (modernizes by eliminating accessory belt drive and sets vehicle up for the use of the heater between stops and starts of the engine)
    4. addition of a front moon-roof
    5. addition of multi-piston Brembo style or Acura style braking on all 4 corners
    6. full electric conversion with regenerative braking, EPS, electric HVAC.
    I finally bought an '08 now that the kids are in college. I think that you are up to it all. I would love to see you try #1, #2, #4 & later #6. I don't think that V6 engine swaps, forced or chemical induction or #5 are any real challenge for you.

    Hi Joe, like the videos. Is your element a manual 4wd to begin with? I have a front wheel drive manual, and would love to do the 4wd conversion. Is that possible by buying the parts that you took off and install them?

    • @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox
      @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox  Před 7 lety

      Hi Simon
      It should be fairly easy the 4WD has no electronic control, it is all mechanically operated (the earlier Element).
      the hardest part would be to change the differential and add the 4wd gear both inside the transmission (swapping a 4WD MT may be easier).
      Then just add the missing 4WD components (rear differential, drive axles, drive shaft and front transfer assembly)

    • @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox

      and Yes, the Element was 4WD MT to begin with....

    Wow! Good to learn about this. I was thinking about 4WD and 2WD. Can change from old 4WD to 2WD which 2WD is fast speeding than 4WD is good for snow/pull the trailer but 2WD and 4WD both pull trailer like pop up camping/motorcycle or small trailer like this. I like to hear from any comments. Thanks

    • @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox
      @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox  Před 7 lety +1

      On a Honda Element the 4wd only engage in slippery condition. The 4wd will give you better control in slippery conditions but will consume more fuel than the 2wd. Look up the GVWR of your vehicle to find out what you can tow. Thanks for watching

    • @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox

      Hi
      If you replace the front differential with a cover the flange bolts are much much shorter ( check the part # at www.hondapartsnow.com)
      also remember only MT transmission has a cover, For AT you need to swap the whole thing AT 2wd and AT 4wd have different transmissions housing, no cover

      Crawl under the car and look for wearout or loose parts by rattling everything you can get your hands on, everything should be stiff.

    Also does it get up to high speeds easier? Like 90 mph to say 110 mph more easily? I know this vehicle is not aerodynamic and is underpowered for begin with but let’s face it, it is pretty heavy to begin with. I would think the conversion to 2wd should help with that problem, right? Gaining better top speed and off the line acceleration than its 4 we counterpart.

    • @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox
      @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox  Před 7 lety +1

      Hi
      Your rear differential is held in place with two things:
      No1 rear damper (tail end of your differential) should be easy swap, support differential with a jack and undo 3 bolts of the mounting bracket, then 2 more bolts for the damper (bolt to the car rear body subframe) wiggle out and replace the rubber damper.
      No2 is the mount assembly (its attach on top of the differential), follow steps in video to access it. Fairly easy job If your car is not rusted. Mark your propeller shaft and companion flange before removing (on both side)
      good luck

    • @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox
      @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox  Před 4 lety

      Hi your Element AWD only kick in when the front and the rear axles experience a difference in tractions. On ice, snow, wet surface and sandy beach is really obvious. Otherwise its dormant.
      The AWD gear is much more weight to carry around and when you drive you actually pump rear differential full time which take energy.
      So yes it consumes more fuel, my 2wd Element averaged 23 MPG and my 4wd Element 20 MPG, but is much better in the snow, a must where I live.

    • @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox
      @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox  Před 6 lety

      The 4 wd Element is full-time front wheel drive, the rear wheel only engage when there is a difference in the distribution between the front and the rear axles. So if you only drive your 4wd Element in sunny Florida, probably you are 99% of the time front wheel drive. Up north in the snow the 4 wd kicks in a little more often.

      Hello
      The practical and the easiest on the wallet is to find a good 4WD parts car that is damaged enough to be a wreck but still has the whole powertrain in good conditions. The other way is to source all the parts individually to built your 4WD powertrain: so you will need:
      • 4WD transmission and mounts
      • propeller shaft with all the mounts
      • rear differential and mounts
      • rear drive axle
      And probably a few other parts that I don’t remember at the moment.
      It should be relatively an easy project if you can find the right parts
      And best of all the 4wd engage with an hydrologic system built in in the rear differential…so no need to do any change to the OBC.
      Visit Elementownerclub and other chat room where you will connect with peoples who already did this project and usually eager to help.
      Visit Hondapartsnow.com for parts list and schematics
      Good luck with your project

      Yes and no, you can change all the AWD component to 2WD. Exept for the transmission, you would need to swap to a 2wd automatic. If you keep the AWD it will run but you will have a live propeller under your car and that could be unsafe.
