    Regarding a team doing a sweep of the podium at the Tour, the closest I can think to it happening was 1986 where LeMond came first, Hinault second, Hampsten fourth, all riding for La Vie Claire.

      Also Astana in the 2009 Tdf with Contador 1st, Armstrong 3rd, and Klodën 5th. They were in a very, very good position to sweep the podium, and likely would have, if not for the late race tactics by Contador. But I don't blame Alberto in the least. Lance was trying to screw Alberto over the entire race and proved that he wasn't to be trusted. If Lance hadn't been such a dick, they could've swept the top three spots.

    The riders that team UAE Emirates will presents on the TDF ,for sure are one of the best teams who have participated on a 3 weeks race, no doubt about it, however the tour de France is a race where being the best it's not enough to win the GC ,and with a ITT on the last stage with about 35 km with a lot of mountain could be decisive after 3500 km of race ,if between the 4 horseman there's not a significative difference (minutes) ,well that time trial will be more epic than 2020 when POGI snatched his first TDF win !

    On paper, Johan is 100 percent correct about Mark Cavendish. But he has the advantage of being, in addition to very smart, absolutely insane at the end of a sprint stage. If he gets his chance, he'll do absolutely anything and everything to take advantage of it. It should be fun to watch.

    • @JakeJ.-yi1du
      @JakeJ.-yi1du Před 23 dny

      Cavendish is toast, it's not 2009 he can win in a second rate stage race with little competition but the TdF is not that.

    • @royoser9956
      @royoser9956 Před 23 dny

      @@JakeJ.-yi1du You're right about that at least on paper. Cavendish has done nothing this year to suggest he can still win a TDF stage. Vingegaard also has done nothing on paper to suggest he is fully recovered and able to win his third TDF as he has not raced at all since his serious injuries. But sporting contests are not won or lost on paper and the improbable sometimes does happen. That is what makes it worth following.

      Cav is smart and still fast, but it will be difficult to beat Phillipsen and especially de Lie. The raw power of that guy is just insane if you look on how he won the belgium championship. He also rides the muur on the big ring and won a sprint with one leg. 😂

    I understand Johan's reservations about Mark Cavendish's chances of notching up stage win #35 especially looking at results so far this year. However, the same could be said in 2021 when he had an equally slow start to the season but he still went on to win four stages at Le Tour and win his second Maillot Vert. Also, he might not have the best lead-out train, but it's certainly not the worst and if it came to it, there are still not many cyclists better than Cav at surfing the wheels of others. Time will tell. Go Sir Cav!

    In the same sentence Hincapie says (about Cav) there's nobody better in the world, but then he says that he just needs that perfect day. I agree with Johan about Cav, Except I don't think he "deserves" the record. Especially after watching year after year where the sprint stages were catered to Cav and his leadout train. Merckx earned his wins in every discipline under the sun. Cav was towed and slung to the line and the other teams rarely tried any tactics other than out-sprinting him after he already had a head start.

  • @SCBonneville
    @SCBonneville Před 23 dny

    UAE "Dominance" is a nice headline... but a bit disingenuous... all you have to do is look at the start lists for the Dauphine` and the Tour de Suisse to get a clearer picture of the "domination"... Bora, Soudal and Visma sent their "A" list TdF riders to the Dauphine`... UAE still had a quality team featuring Ayuso, Politt, Sivakov, Soler and Wellens... and they got waxed... Hell, Matty J and Visma smoked them... and that's with Kruijy and Van Barrle crashing out and Kuss being sick... In the Tour de Suisse, UAE had their "A" list TdF riders up against... who? None of the "Big 3's" "A" listers... So please... let's wait and see how things play out in the Tour BEFORE you anoint UAE the "Best team ever" status... I ain't buying it right now... Talent "on paper" is one thing... but I don't remember ever seeing UAE ever use its' talent all that effectively, tactically speaking, in a Grand Tour setting...
