- Late 2016 was a fantastic time to purchase cattle. Here we go over some basic knowledge of the cattle market, terminology, timing your purchases and what we are buying. A must watch if you are new and considering getting into cows.

Thank you. My research to begin a cattle operation is just beginning and you have helped my understanding and knowledge grow quickly. I feel more prepared to do more research. Prior to watching this I made my first visit to a sale barn simply to watch. I learned a bunch, but I sure have more to learn. wow! thank you! what a great education you presented. I've been watching a lot of videos and you have to date filled in just about every question I had. Through watching your video, I feel like I have a better grasp of the big picture and an understanding of the market dynamics in general. To date with what I've been learning has been all about land with a bunch of grass on it and rotating the cows: some say 5-15 b days while others say 5-9 days. However, by you informing me about the cow type: hefir, steer, etc. and leaving myself with options, I feel a lot of weight lifted from minute detail. Thank you, again. I just came upon your video and I hope to learn more from you-- fantastic job in clearing and methodically presenting the info!

I appreciate cattle ranchers because I love eating beef. By far, it is my favorite source of protein, and I image that can be said by most Americans. But I prefer to leave the business of raising cows to those far more knowledgeable. You guys rock!

I was at our local cattle sale barn today. Not my first time at a cattle sale or any auction for that matter. You drove the nail home when you talked about the auctioneer knowing the market and trying to start the bid at that price. I'm in cattle country of NW Missouri. The buyers where just as you described, discret. We're on a 30 acre farm that we own out right. It's half pasture and half really nice mature hard wood timber. I recently started up my own HVAC business that has been a boom. Business has been good. I'm looking to invest in some cattle and had no idea where to start. Thanks to you, I now have an understanding. My perimeter fence is about 90 yrs old and in poor shape. However, with a strand or two of hot wire, I'd be in good shape. At the end of your video you said when in doubt buy some young hefers. I'm guessing, that a finished hefer is more valuable because she can go either way. Sold for butcher or be bred. Great upload. I live on the coast of Maine, questionable grazing land for large critters so I’m considering a micro size breed, Dexter, who also browse on our type of terrain like deer or goats, which we already have for dairy. I’m considering it as a supplement to our self sufficiency with potential to profit on our abundance as we have already succeeded with pork from this summer, people loved it, we gave too generous a deal but it was fun. You are a good, to the point instructor. Thank-you

The market for grass fed beef is growing as folk are becoming more health conscious. The Keto community which also includes a growing meat only sector, is now huge and expanding fast as chronic disease is the worst in human history. Folk are cutting out sugar, grains, cereals and those so called vegetable (processed seed) oils, which is good news for the grass fed operations. Many of the Keto community are city folk with little understanding of farming, but they are expressing concern and interest about how they can support and connect with farmers. Keto is huge on the internet, they are well informed about the nutritional benefits of meat, presenting scientific research at seminars across the country. This group is doing a great deal of positive marketing for the grass fed operations, which can only be good news for the continued demand for high quality beef, which should reduce chances of a drop in prices and a expanding market as folk turn away from corn fed operations. I mentioned the Keto community as a possible outlet for those looking for a direct market to sell their product.

And the Carnivore diet is an extension of the keto diet. This bodes well for the immediate future. Praying this trend continues. We need to keep pushing comparison nutrition info out there for all of these products.

great video. The thing I would not like as well about cows compared to hogs, sheep and chicken, is the amount of work I can't do myself, in addition to the fences and amount of land you need to have. Love the way you work through the numbers too

Just found your awesome channel. THANK YOU! You've given me a lot to think about. We're also in Virginia. My husband and I are in the beginning stages of getting into beef cattle. We have dairy cows.....seems like a lot less work for beef, but I'm doing as much research as possible just in case I'm wrong. lol Although we're on 40 acres, we're looking for more acreage with water and fencing close by. Lucky enough to live in an area where there's lots available at a decent price. My initial idea was to buy calves to start since we'll have plenty of fresh whole milk saving us a ton on replacer, but now I'm not so sure. It's been difficult trying to decide which direction to go.

Mostly back through the sale while trying to establish a reputation and gain more experience. Just don't feel comfortable selling retail until I'm confident I'm doing this well. We're lucky to be in a position where we don't need to profit immediately, but would like to see us selling something within the next 3 years. My passion is genetics/animal nutrition. My husbands passion is making money, so you see where there might be an issue. ;-) Currently have 2 massive Brown Swiss bred to a limousine . The rest are A2/A2 Jerseys which we're breeding to sell. Can't sell milk products in Virginia, so breeding/selling the Jerseys and using the extra milk to grow out pigs is the only money maker with them for now. That's what led me to consider buying calves, but maybe too long to see any profit? Selling the better heifers/cows to other farms looking to upgrade genetics with better milking ability, then selling the rest for beef would be the ultimate. However, people in hell want ice water.... I get it. Just don't know the market enough to know if that's a smart move. My confusion comes from deciding to buy at auction looking for healthy cows with an unknown background, or to pay a bit more by going with higher end stock that would appeal to more than one market. Hope that makes sense.
Looked up Hand n' Hand livestock solutions. No seminars anywhere close to us but nice to know he sells videos. You should consider doing something similar if you're not doing it already. If you are, we need to talk. lol Also looked a bit at your website......very nice, btw. ;-) Thanks for wearing your logo on your jacket so I could find it. :D Your style of herd management and end products are similar to what we want to do. Since we're in SW Virginia, I'm on the fence about going 100% grass fed. Winters can be brutal up here. We do supplement with with non-GMO/no soy/organic feed during the Winter. Minerals, kelp, and probiotics year round. Sounds cost prohibitive, but can't remember the last time we needed a vet, so idk. Anywho, sorry for such a long response to such a short question. :(
We'll likely be hosting a hand'n'hand school again next year. I would strongly recommend looking at at the sell/buy system if you are planning on working the stock sale.

Yes, there are some beautiful farms for sale around where I live. Prices don't make sense right now though. Some are selling at 2,500 an acre, some at 5-6k an acre. The more acreage you buy, the cheaper the price per acre. There's a few listing at 1,200 an acre, but that's for 50+ acres. I'm in the South West region near the North Carolina line. We have a realtor who's sending us automatic emails of listings that come up as soon as they're listed. That way, you don't have to talk to anybody and only call if you have questions. If you're interested, I can send you a private message with the person who's helping me. She's not someone who'll bug you which is hard to find in a realtor. But she's lived here all her life and knows everybody, including those who aren't listing but want to sell by word of mouth. Or just check out zillo.com and check there. I like being near the NC line because we're close to a real city, but still have to drive down the mountain to get there. ;-)
I would like to get into cattle farming. I have 170 acres of land where I now keep 100 goats but I would like to now start cattle rearing with the aim of achieving a herd of about 300 cows in a few years. I will appreciate your advice on how best to start to achieve those numbers in 5 - 7 years. Can I start with 10 cattle and achieve those numbers? Should I start with adult cows or yearlings or calves? I look forward to your advice.

cow days are computed based more for the traditional (say 40 head on 40 acres), yielding appr. 20% utilization of grass. greater utilization can be influenced by mob rotation based on grass stage, time spent, water supply, personal experience. we have done neer 90% utilization on some acres.

4 years ago I used to keep cows but you are correct there is not much left in beef industry. I am currently running a small buffalo herd mainly for dairy, can you please provide little more information on this issue?

+Chlebio Chris yes we graze into the winter and will be moving these ones out once they settle. An in depth topic but we generally can graze through December into Jan. In my experience our wet early winters degrade any grass left around by Feb-March so we plan on hay for those months.

Get a sub to The Stockman-GrassFarmer. That paper is the voice of the grassfed and grass-finished operator and it fills me with just plain excitement. The books he listed here are in every issue and they kick the butt out of 'But We've Always Done It This Way.' Do it the old way and you'll be making your place a desert, no overstatement. Do it the SGF way and you'll make money, have your kids wanting to farm and have steadily richer soil, better grassland, less drought, I could keep ranting but Get That Paper. I don't have experience with brittle environment production but many of the same principles apply. Know what the land can support, manage the cattle well, have a profitable market, etc..

Yes, let the grass run the show by letting it tell you when to take the animals off, which means when you still have 6-8" of leaf left on the plants. You may say 'isn't that a waste of feed?' but the most important livestock you have to feed are the critters living underground, all that symbiosis where the plants trampled flat (sun energy) feed the soil life and the soil life feeds the plants. Keep the animals bunched tight enough on small enough sections to prevent the cows from taking second bites of their favorite plants, i.e., they need to mow evenly. Enjoy the next three years as you see your grasslands healing!
