  • Part 3 of a series in which I control Ableton Live from Python using my SCAMP Libraries. In this part, we create a drumkit part using Cellular Automata.
If you want to try it yourself, you can get the code here: git.sr.ht/~marcevanstein/musi... . To run it, you'll need to install the SCAMP libraries for Computer-Assisted Music in Python. Instructions for getting up and running can be found here: scamp.marcevanstein.com/
If you enjoy these video and/or want to get early access to the whole series, I hope you'll consider supporting me on Patreon: / marcevanstein
Take my course on Kadenze.com, which will guide you step-by-step in getting started with Python and SCAMP: www.kadenze.com/courses/compu...
Further information on lessons and workshops I teach can be found here: teaching.marcevanstein.com/

Having been introduced to cellular automata decades ago, in the form of the game of life, I'm very excited to hear them used musically.

      Love conways game of life!
Oh wow, decades ago? That's awesome. I use cellular automata to make art.
If you've known for decades or it, I can only image what kinda person you are. Bet you're awesome :) hope all is well

not entirely sure if it's how automatas work, but it would be interesting to hear how the beat would turn out if you used a 3x16 grid instead of 3 1x16 grids. Would the beat sound more coherent when they all affect each other, or would it sound more disconnected since having alive cells above and below increase the chance of a cell dying thus making simultaneous tones more rare?

I'm following this occasionally with curiosity. I happen to be working on an album of electronic music mostly based on mathematical inspiration, so what you're doing is of great interest. I hadn't thought of using cellular automata until now - which is actually hard to believe. How did I miss this one? :) I use Bitwig and Java, rather than Ableton and Python, but I think we have some things in common!

Hey that sounds awesome. I'm interested and would like to know more. Love creative work. Sounds awesome and lots of fun. I like to find similar or different creative minds. Love being inspired and learning etc. Sending good vibes :)

2:48 he accidentally said rule 30 when he was actually pointing at rule 34.. he could’ve said rule 34 in a conepletely normal context and it would’ve been so funny

That would be a truly strange and wondrous application of cellular automata ;-)

Right? I just found it from recommendations. Love it! Imagine if CZcams always suggested cook interesting inspiring (actually intelligent) things. ❤️ Imagine if that's what was popular :)

Hey! Love Conway's game of life. I have been using cellular automata to make art. So I searched it on Google, and it recommended you on my page. Very cool. Thanks for sharing ❤️

@@marcevanstein fantastic! Glad to find your channel.
Funny cuz I knew of it for some time, but only typed cellular automata the other day on Google (finding images) and just today it suggested your channel on my (Google phone) 'My Discover' page! Very cool :)
It's nice to see interesting or intelligent things in there and not just mainstream news lol 😆

It would be interesting to have the wiggling of the filter done by a CA, though you might need something to prevent it from being biased too much towards moving in one direction.
