After Robot, the first film I ever made, is a music doc about Kwaito - South African electronic township music. I am sharing it today in memory of Nelson Mandela. Don't mourn Madiba, celebrate him with kwaito music!
"Kwaito music is a direct product of the freedom of black South Africa. Kwaito is the voice of the new generation, with rap in indigenous languages over slowed down house beats."
Interviews and music by Alaska, Apple Seed, Arthur, Bongo Maffin, B.O.P., Brenda Fassie, Bruce Sebitlo, Chicco, Chiskop, DJ Oscar, Graeme Gilfillian, Hugh Masekela, Joe Nina, Junior, Lance Stehr, Kabelo, Lindelani Mkhize, Mandoza, Maria McMcloy, Msawawa, Mzambiya, Senyaka, Thandiswa & Zola.
Copyright notice: This film is being shared non-commercially for the love of South Africa's cultural legacy. If your are one of the artists in the film and have questions about the use of your music please contact info@tpbafk.tv

House Music is from the Black slums of New York, just like HipHop. Frankie Knuckles (Bronx), Larry Levan (Brooklyn), along with all of the brothas and sistas in Chicago. It is beautiful that South Africans could feel that Rhythm in it, and they could tell this just wasn't some kind of European music or something. They felt the SOUL and made something New and hot. Now Amapiano is something else fresh, put together with the dancing which reminds so much of Pop-Locking and Breakdance, but with unique, mesmerizing South African flavor and attitude. No matter where you put our people or what you put us through, our spirits will always prevail and create beauty and success. Thank God for The Drum.

I watched this Doccie in 2018 and it just popped up again on my youtube. Zola always had wisdom. "Our parents were fighting for freedom and we are fighting for our identity" 21 years later that is still the case in 2023

This is so amazing. I was only 12 years in 2002. All I wanted was to learn the pantsula moves. Bra Hugh is talking sense on this documentary and Zola. Yo, Zola was also on fire in 2002!

Kwaito evolved into Amapiano. The drum patterns are the same. The only difference is the bassline is now harder hitting and length of the chord progressions is longer. And Amapiano uses a string on the offbeat instead of a hihat. The vocals became more refined instead of the rap vocals in Kwaito.

Amapiano is a devolution of Kwaito and House. It is a far lesser genre than Kwaito was. Kwaito was more popular than any foreign genre of music in it's prime.

Amapiano will NEVER fill the SHOES THAT KWAITO SOWED. KWAITO was a liberation movement that was essential to the identity of Azanians all over.
No genre took the risks that Kwaito DID back then in Azania

It's hard to find documentaries about Kwaito. I am surprised that this one which is really the most interesting one for me so far on the internet is made for Swedish television. I wish there could be a follow up to this documentary as Kwaito spread from Joburg and had more influence from Durban artists around 2010, it has since declined however as other genres are now dominating the music scene..

Man, why did Kwaito die? We created a beautiful genre and we basically just let it die like that? Granted the productions were not that impressive I feel like it would have improved well enough to the levels of hiphop/rap and rnb because, lets be honest, Kwaito was still in it's infant stages and it died young...

In my opinion the production was perfect it was simple it's my most listened to genre and as a DJ I play many genres here in Australia but kwaito reminds me of back home in Zambia growing up in the early 2000s I'd hear it on the radio frequently
