  • Jimmie Johnson has returned as a NASCAR Cup Series driver for his own team, Legacy Motor Club. However, he has not performed up to the level of Erik Jones, John Hunter Nemechek, or even Corey Heim. Whether it's the next generation car, not running full-time, or getting old Jimmie Johnson is struggling. Is there a way to return the results around?

    As a Jimmie fan, I agree the fact he’s gotta completely change his driving style with very little run time is the thing causing this. But as seen before he got caught in someone else’s mess the past couple of races he’s been improving in running position steadily

    I think jimmie isnt racing with the goal to win (im sure he still wants to win but hes also not delusional)... i think hes racing as a "team player" hes trying to gather data for his team to help that development plan while also having fun doing what he loves

    I feel like Hendrick for a few years had a way of masking two very fast cars between four teams. Ultimately you would see them end up with one championship contender, one very fast car, and two that barely scraped into the playoffs at best. And the way they have so many cogs in that machine, I wouldn't be surprised if the best equipment got moved around at the drop of a hat.
    It's weird to think going back though of how much the last 6 years vindicated the absolute desperation we saw in Jimmie at that Roval race in 2018 when he dive bombed Truex.
    If you would have told me that only a year removed from a 3 win season, that would be Jimmie's last genuine shot at a win with over two years left at Hendrick, I would have scoffed.

  • @gamez4420
    @gamez4420 Před 15 dny +2

    I cant remember where he said it, but it was an ontrack interview this season, and Jimmie openly said he just didnt quite understand the next gen car yet. Like you touch on in the video, the current car requires almost a complete stylistic shift from what he is not only used to, but a proven winner utilizing his loose setups. When you watch him run traffic and fight for positions deeper in the field, you can see his talent is still there at times. Ive also speculated for awhile his car is not up to par with the other 2 LMC entries, whether its being used as a test car or whether its just lacking the same quality.
    If we were to magically just make Jimmie understand what he needs to do overnight, and put him in say the 43 car, Id imagine hed be running consistently in the like 15th to 22nd range.

    @David_JS1 Před 15 dny +1

    I think Jimmie fell behind as a driver by not racing in 2021 and 2022, and only doing part time the last two years. Even when he "retired" in 2020, his performance had already been off compared to his prime.

    @Dae52 Před 7 dny

    I've seen a lot of people try to come up with many reasons as to why Johnson fell off after his 7th championship, but to be honest, the team as a whole was on a decline even during that season. His 7th championship was his most underwhelming by far, and the only reason he won it was because for some reason Kyle Busch pit on the last caution and Logano and Edwards took each other out. He didn't win it because of a typical dominant Johnson performance, he won it by process of elimination. Jimmie's 7th Championship, statistically, is the worst season for any Cup series champion in the history of the sport. The next year, ALL of HMS was on the backfoot. The entire team hit a decline around that time. It took them a few years to rebound from it. There was a lot of shuffling around at the time. Chase Elliott hadn't been around for too long, they just brought Larson on board, chess pieces across the board were getting moved around and I don't think HMS was prepared to lose Jeff Gordon and Dale Jr back to back like they did. Those two were both in the top 3 for most profitable drivers in the sport at the time, and Johnson was the third in that group. At the same time, you've got young blood like Chase Elliott on the team now who you also need to establish as a future star, you can't just cling onto Jimmie forever. The whole HMS decline a few years back I attributed to them losing a lot of pieces, shuffling pieces around, and overall just rebuilding.

    It’s not the physical strength it’s the aging, the guy is in top top shape but with age you lose reflex’s you loose that link between brain and body and with having a wife and kids and a lot to loose you without a doubt even subconsciously lose that fearlessness, also, there is no substitute for seat time. If he ran full-time, he would do significantly better. You cannot expect to do well running five races a year in the top United States motorsport it’s not arca east it’s cup
