In an out-of-body experience (OBE), people feel as though they have left their physical body and can see the world from outside it. What are these experiences, and are they spiritual? As a 19 year-old psychology student, Susan Blackmore had an extraordinarily powerful OBE that lasted for hours and culminated in a mystical experience of transformation and oneness.
Her determination to understand what had happened led Susan to becoming a parapsychologist - a profession she later gave up, zen training, and decades of research into the nature of mind and consciousness. In this talk, Susan will explore the surprising science of out-of-body experiences, whether anything really leaves the body during an OBE, and their profound effect on our sense of self.
Sue Blackmore is a psychologist, lecturer and writer researching consciousness, memes, and anomalous experiences, and a Visiting Professor at the University of Plymouth. She is a TED lecturer, blogs for the Guardian, and often appears on radio and television. The Meme Machine (1999) has been translated into 16 other languages; more recent books include Conversations on Consciousness (2005), Zen and the Art of Consciousness (2011), Seeing Myself: The new science of out-of-body experiences (2017) and a textbook Consciousness: An Introduction (3rd Ed 2018).

There were well documented experiences of tunel perception with blind people whith no visual experience.

Blind people are only blind physically, their physical eyes don't work. Their spiritual bodies are perfect, they can see, hear, etc fine, as the spiritual astral body is the body traveling down the tunnelling tunnel. That's why it's called 'out of body', its a spiritual experience but still conscious.

Often in the out of body state, there is a 360 degree visual field suggesting that sight is no longer being perceived from the retina to the brain.
So? And it is claimed that way, but there is no practical way to envision this.

This could be the answer I've searched for. When giving birth, i lost a lot of blood, i had not pain killers, and my dr. was a naturalist. I fell out of the bed when trying to sit up, and next thing i knew i was headed to the hallway, i was in no pain, and looking to see my new son. I then saw my doctor running down the hall toward me, but it was as if he didn't see me. he was over 6' tall and i was looking down on him. This struck me as odd, but i looked to see where he was going and he was going into my room. i went back as not to get into trouble. My body on the floor and he was cursing at a nurse, He was in the way i couldn't see what he was doing, but i did notice he had one blue shoe cover on and one off, his gloves were off, His blue head cover was off. And i woke the next day and told him, i must have died. He said no i didn't die. Could this out of body fit the bill? I wonder if i could do this again? without bleeding out lol.

I have done 2 types of out-of-body experiences. There is an astral travel that one can do after a few weeks or months of practice. But through a yoga, it is important that you have complete control over the energy of your body. In this, we collect the energy of our body at the navel and get out of the body, we can see ourselves in front of the mirror inside the room.
I've never "trained" myself to do so... But just wanted to mention that I've been having dreams about myself leaving my body and each time I can feel immense pressure at my naval... Didn't think of anything until you wrote this comment
I had an out of body experienc when i was 17 years old. I had a document from my brother who was in the Belgium army parra commandos. The document said you have to breath in 3 sec, hold 3 sec, breath out 3 sec and hold 3 sec again. Keep continuing that and clear your mind while trying to see with eyes closed. I did that for a while. And suddenly i feal a vibration going trough my body. On the right sight of my head just behind my ear i heard a very loud and hard wisseling sound. From that moment the first thought i had was im gonna die. I started flying out of my body trough a sord of tunnel and finaly flying over land. The next thing i felt was that my body was far away and i was still thinking i would die. I felt that my body was breathing on its own like on auto pilot. But the weird thing was ... i was breathing trough my hips. After is i even had bleu lines where my pants was on my hips. I came on a place and i saw snow like on a tv that dosnt find a post. Suddenly everything clears out and i saw a white building. 1 floor high. The only thing i saw inside was that everything was made of a very reflectif grey metal. It was like everything was made of molten mettal. A modern looking table and seats next to it. They looked like drops of mettal but fallen in a way you could sit on it. From the moment i tried to look where i was or if i could see the sun or moon i flashed back into my body. I rushed to my padrents and told them the story. After it i could not enter my room for ours. It was like i was traumatised and i could feel a very weird energy in my room. Ive bin wrighting it all down in a book for my children.

I suffered from the sleep paralyses for years until I found the reason for it. I had a none-dangerous brain tumor that caused a brain stem compression. It has been removed in January 2005 and seince then the sleep paralysis is gone!
I really don’t think we need a scientist explanation for this. They can explain away… But a person with an experience overrides a person with an opinion.
What does that even mean? Why would you NOT need a scientist to explain physical phenomena?

@@ashleigh3021 Scientist does need to give an explanation to this - A Psychologist's perspective from tne angle of a Psycholdellic experiences of an explanation all very well - but, Neuroscience's perspective is just as well valid here ..... what I am more interested is - 'why as a child I experienced Astral Rojection?? more importantly .... just watched this video yesterday and at night thought why not give it a go. Couldn't sleep much had a few short dream but couldn't remember what it was about then all of a sudden felt my body shaking (like a constant shiver) and I remember why not try rolling out of bed which I did the moment I did that I felt detached but with my state of mind fully awake and alert. Went around the room saw my son and wife sleeping and myself and thought how can I be here when I am there. Tried to close and open my hands and I could feel it touching my head (I am a tummy sleeper) anyways I tried to leave the room but couldn't and felt a little bored couldn't do much in the room at night so decided to fly back into my body. I felt this rush my mind becoming 1 again. Not sure what happened but I am a non smoker / drug / drinker and in my 30's
You have to have a plan of where to go and what to do otherwise, yes you will get bored and go back to your body.
When she talks of the tunnel being created by visual misconception and moving patterns on the retina effects causing hallucinations, are we to presume that somebody having a heart attack and being resuscitated though unconscious or someone flatlining on the operating table is actually laying there with their eyes wide open?

correct definition of OBE: an experience in which one seems to perceive the world from a location outside the physical body avatar. The thing missed is that the so called physical body is nothing of the sort. no one has ever experienced their physical body nor anyone else's they have only experienced avatars within a dreamscape mistaken for reality because it is the only thing we have been taught to think of as reality. The world we perceive is not the real world, its a construct of an apparently shared world that may or may not be the real world as no one has actually found a way to go outside their personal dream of reality to experience reality directly. We could all be in the matrix experiencing a data stream generated by a computer, we could be in the real world experiencing data our own senses have gathered from it... that is a different discussion. What is fact is that when one has an OBE, they experience what seems like the same world they experience normally but from a different point of view... but the world we normally experience is not the real world. Most of what you are seeing before you right now is not real, its memory and if your eyes were not moving, it would not refresh but persist and even change based on how your brain generates dreams... assuming real world source, the dream you are currently having is corrected by sensory information... when you have an OBE, it could still be corrected by sensory information, but mostly its just memory and imagination to fill in the gaps. We are reality dreaming about ourself... but a dream can be accurate to reality, if the data we are receiving is from reality. again a different discussion.

So I was asleep n i guess dreaming but i realized i was dreaming. realizing i was aware n had control, decided to check on my coworker who worked the night shift, i was the opener so id being seeing her soon anyways. I was at my work walking around and i saw her by the coffee machine. When i actually went to work that morning she seemed off i asked how was her night, she said i got creeped out by the coffee machine, like someone was watchin me but there was no one in the store

There are several blank spots in this video where the audio cuts out.
One often makes the incorrect assumption that an OBE is 100% out into physical reality space and time, which they assume is reality.

She started by dismissing psychoanalysis as contributing nothing, and that it doesn't work. Does she mean in a clinical sense, or ideological and structural sense? Because the unconscious can and does help to explain reality, individually and socially. E.g. The way it transformed the knowledge regarding the nurture of children, how to understand desire, morality, control, linguistic structures and code and significance, to gain greater insight into the structures of thoughts, the multiple ways the psyche emerges. If she wants to go.into spirituality, surely mythology and the collective unconscious, epigenetics, ethology, and the complexities of neurology, and evolution might help. Along with philosophy. I am fifteen minutes in and all im getting is a mad women who has had perceptual experiences through careful deliberate psychodelics. Spirituality has been trivialized by her as far as I'm currently aware.
Consulting Sue Blackmore about near death experiences is a bit like asking a firework company about the Space programme.

A lot of people have reported accurate information during OBE/NDE. Admittedly, there are some people who see a slightly different reality when the OBE and some go into other worlds altogether. It could be a property of the astral realm or an overlay of the persons own mind. People have gone from dream to lucid dream, to OBE, and vice versa. I think it's a spectrum of consciousness. This doesn’t rule out the external mind theory. Christianity still informs our judgement as people are inclined to believe that if these experiences can be linked to observable brain processes then they must be strictly biological, so what is of the flesh is of the flesh and what is of the spirit is of the spirit. There could be a biological component. I think this could explain why psychic ability tends to run in families or twin telepathy. It would have been nice if she would have tried to OBE while not on drugs. I do think science and spirituality will converge at some point but we still have a way to go before that.
WTF does OBEs have to do with spirituality? I believe OBEs are real, but we have no proof. But, even if we did, it has nothing to do with spirituality or religion.

There’s no groundbreaking stuff here, just someone who explains stuff according to her dogma, which she will defend rigidly.
