    NOTES
*1 COMPARISONS OF UNREVIEWED GEAR : Please don't ask me how a product compares to another which I haven't reviewed, as it isn't possible to comment on such products I haven't tested. Check out my website for reviews of products I have completed instead (hit the review tag, and separate tags).
*2 MORE ADVICE : If you are asking me how does X product compare to Y that I HAVE reviewed, or how does something sound beyond comment in videos, or system / further advice, please sign up to Patreon (small amounts!) or make contributions via PayPal where we text chat or Zoom etc. I can't answer all questions free on CZcams! I only charge £25 for an hour consultation on Zoom of all my experiences.
*3 ABUSE POLICY : I encourage and like debate, and constructive criticism, but people who abuse or troll me, or my subscribers or commenters, post very negative and non constructive and uncorroborated comments designed to put me or others down (where they don't explain themselves), or they could be perceived as such, as well as aggressive comments / hate, or pit my subscribers against me, get their comments removed and I hide them from commenting again. I don’t need the hassle of these people for all the work I put in! Again I don’t mind people who disagree with me, where they explain, or indeed debate, but I tend to delete comments that are not substantiated where the poster doesn’t explain themselves eg just ‘this amp is really bad’ as it doesn't add to the discussion

Good to see that you are dipping into vinyl. I have kept on using vinyl over the decades alongside digital playback, and I have been happy with Ortofon MC cartridges. I am using the Blue on my Project turntable - an excellent combination indeed with plenty of detail, live in the music and some albums really ‘sparkle’. Keep up the good work!

Great to see you're touching base on vinyl once again, I've enjoyed vinyl for so many years as I find generally 70's and 80's reissues on cd are not that great. However, modern band cd's produced today (post 2010) generally sound better than a recent reissue on vinyl. So its good to have both mediums.

I agree vinyl is great but I love the convenience, dynamic range and resolution of digital content. We live in a digital world.

Thank you for this review! I have it on my shortlist as an upgrade for my 2M Red. I have a NAD C588. Also, a Tube-Box DS2. I am also interested in the Grado Sonata 3 and the Ortofon 2M Black.

MC cartridges offer not just better high frequency but quicker transient response which theoretically equates to better audio detail. That said a good MM cartridge can provide very quality sound.
A pretty good analogy can be made between MM and MC cartridges vs dynamic and condenser microphones. A dynamic mic element is a weightier slower transducer than the capsule of a condenser microphone.
Similar to the MC cartridge the condenser microphone is thought in general terms to be the better piece of gear, the MM cartridge or the dynamic microphone are offen thought as lesser but that is not always the case.
That said a Sennheiser MD441 which is a $1000 dynamic mic can offer to many people a "nicer" sound than a cheap budget condenser mic.
Ultimately it's s all a matter of what kind of sound appeals to your ear, how your entire playback chain interacts and works as a system.... and of course just how much money you have to throw at the issue. ;)

I own the Quintet Blue and Bronze. I also own the Hegel V10. The QB is a wonderful all-rounder for the money IMO. I love the look and sound! The Hegel V10 sounds the best using the balanced out. SE out still sounds above average though. Since I have an Ortofon step-up, I use that in front of the V10 because it sounds so much better than the MC in the Hegel. But I'd expect that. One last thing: I despise the Hegel V10s ergonomics. After living with the Hegel V10 for six months, I wouldn't purchase such a fiddly phono amp again.

I've been thinking about upgrading my debut pro also to an MC cart. Question did you have to adjust the VTA going from the pickit pro to the MC?
I bought mine in the states so it has a shamiko Rainier cart on it.

That's a huge cartridge. But are these really better than mm?

    • @7171jay

@marcusb. Whether an MC cartridge is "better" than a MM cartridge really depends what cartridge, what table and arm,, and pretty much everything else in the playback system.
Really it all comes down to what you prefer sonically. Generally the MC cartrige is thought to be the "better" device but some people find that they can be too analytical sounding.
A playback system is a personal journey, people can sometimes make suggestions that might be useful in helping you but its complicated and you have to really sort things for yourself by actually listening, swapping gear out, and learning how things work and what your own preferences are which can even change over time.
