  • Former Pakistan diplomat and journalist Husain Haqqani on Monday said the people of India and Pakistan must realise the common threads between them and not hold America responsible for the animosity between the two neighbours in the subcontinent.
Husain Haqqani spoke in length about the India-Pakistan ties at the LFL session.

@msc14111990 no they don't. India is a great nation that way. I am a Bengali Hindu Choudhury with roots in Bangladesh married to a Himachali Brahmin - born in Kolkata, raised in Chennai, stayed in Delhi and living in Madhya Pradesh for many years now. I have travelled far and wide in India and never ever have I felt that I am a foreigner, common language or otherwise. Everywhere we have been welcomed with open arms and made to feel a part of their home .
This is the beauty of our nation.
      Your comment is bull.

They are now Bangadeshi citizens (check the muslim and non muslim population percentage there. ) And present day Pakistan still has 4-5% non muslims.

My late father was an Army officer in Pakistan Army, he had two best Hindu friends Mr. Rajal Das who was a civil Judge and Mr. P Amar Das who was a barrister in Hyderabad Sindh Pakistan in the 1980s. They with their families used to visit us and we used to visit them. We only lost contact after my parent's death. I know most of their relatives moved to India. Uncle Amar's sons still in Hyderabad and are doctors. I must admit that commonly minorities are not treated very well but it is not all bleak, many minority people are living very good lives in Pakistan. There are Army officers, Police officers, doctors, barristers, judges. It is mostly in remote villages where there are Landlords who treat all their haris (people working on their lands) bad, irrespective of their religion. Muslim workers get the same treatment as Hindus. However, Hindus do have a choice to move to India but Muslims keep suffering at the hands of their Muslim 'brethern' landlord. It is a shame that the Government does nothing about it, as these landlords are very powerful in Government.

The only common emotion of Haterate of each other because Pakistan has been an irritant for India so how can they be friends. For the last 70 years India evolved into a Soft Power so was dictated by the Soviet Union in 1965, the USA in 1971 & Kargil . Since then India has moved to become less dependent to hear these Major Power to broker mediation. India is less forgiving now than in the past since nothing was achieved in the past.Dilpomacy is left hand with a velvet and a strong stick on the right hand. Pakistan today is at its Weakest stage because of the use of Lakshar since 1948 and the Civilised World asking for its elimination by the Pakistan Army. Excellent Presentation by Hussain Haqquni. Its lame to blame Pakistan for our lack of vision to solve our problems. The rise of pseudo-secular votebank politics by the Left and Congress has created a virtual Pakistan within our own borders. The Muslims who chose to stay here would not have done so if they did not believe in universal secular framework of governance under common laws. So the sanction to practise Sharia laws and provocative religious mores antithetical to religious harmony has shown the seeds of communal disharmony ... fundamentalists across the border has exploited this division to portray muslims of India as victims to feed and fuel the Kashmir cause. I guess Progressive,Secular, just and united India is the perfect solution to all the issues between Pakistan and us therefore its entirely in hands to find it.

@Bramha's Astra Prima facie the 98% franchise defy common sense since only a fraction of it migrated ,so apparently the vote was non-representative or rigged.Furthermore given the numerous communal riots that ensued after partition would have compelled most of them to flee despite the logistical challenges on the ground. So the creation of a Indian Muslim identity is a betrayal of the secular spirit of them in India which they tried to escape after partition by not going to Pakistan.

@Bramha's Astra thats a bit rich even today most muslims are economically backward but well aware of this term ... so much so that Congress amended the Constitution in 76 and added it expressly to win elections. Also, hard to imagine riots described worse than the Holocaust not sending a chilling effect all over the country even those days.

Why would anyone want to undo partition. I am more than happy about the people who left india for pakistan in the name of forming a nation based on religion. Clearly they didn't adhered to the idea of secularism and therefore destined to be doomed sooner or later. Its per capita GDP keeps going downward, has already been overtaken several times by military power and now is on the brink of bankruptcy. Its a country on the downhill which will implode anytime and therefore we just need to make sure the harms from across the border doesn't impact us and our country. Any civilization which allows religious doctrines to govern its civil society will not prosper and this separation of church from state was the very foundation on which Western societies have progressed so much in recent past.

I respect haqqani and agree to most of his views, but won't agree that Indian subcontinent is least integrated. India-Nepal-Bhutan are perfectly integrated with practically open Borders and easy flow of trade and people. With certain restrictions we can consider Bangladesh in this list as well. Only problem is with Pakistan and China. As for India is concerned, till this year Pakistan was declared the most favourable nation by India in terms of Trade. In spite of Bullying attitude of China, India has opened up its market for China. Ironically, the same day when China Blocked move in UN against Indian interest, the very same day Indians purchased Chinese phones en masse (13 th March 2019 was Xiaomi Redmi note 7 Pro sale on Flipkart; and the same day China blocked anti terror move in UN). How much more the world expects from India. Saying India has equal share of the blame for hostile Indo-Pak relations is just an attempt to have a balancing talk; without substance. India is practically blame-free in the Indo-Pak Hostility. And India has done a lot, especially considering it is a developing economy, for the economical integration of South-East Asia.
