I remember Khan arrogantly claiming he'd never make the same mistakes as WCW.
Well, when WCW was dying their ticket sales, TV ratings and PPV buy rates steadily declined as fans sent a clear message that they didn't like what was being presented. But no one at WCW listened.

To be more specific, WCW/TBS was going through a process of being bought or merged with another company, and the new people who owned Turner did Not like wrestling. They refused to pay for what Bischoff wanted to do, to turn the company around, so it went under.
It’s all fine. Their American ratings are ahead of the NBA ratings in Lichtenstein according to Meltzer. So they’re in a strong position

You realise a wrestling show being in the top 30 of any nights ratings would be insane in most countries? Like wrestling is a very obscure thing.
Even if NBA ratings are equal to, or less than AEW, the NBA would still bring in higher ad revenue.

@@ValiantValium The 5000 was only for traditional cable buys, streaming more than likely adds 40k+. Considering their limited reach with AXS TV, they do quite well on PPV in reality. HTK did something like 78k, for instance.
I guess Tony won't be satisfied until AEW is being produced live in front of 50 people in a high school gym. Gotta have the real indy experience.
When it degrades to being hosted in a broken down barn or straight backyard wrestling, that's when you've basically hit the very bottom. But at this rate maybe we'll see AEW get there in the next few years as Tony continues to waste his father's money into it.

Yep. He puts so much heart and soul in little dudes who are all workrate with no personality and are low midcarders at best. Pockets was interesting until he was overexposed, now I could care less about him, and I never saw the appeal with Danny Pelvic Thrusts neither.
Edge has been such a non-factor on AEW that even Corny forgot about him when he was talking about stars that were prominent on WWE now that Punk is gone.

Last AEW match I liked was a couple weeks ago when Matt Cardona came out and wrestled him. And that's because I like Matt and his action figure stuff.

Maybe Dixie can give Tony some pointers on what to do with his time after he runs AEW completely into the ground while simultaneously losing millions of dollars of his dad's money. And if Tony wants the male perspective he could always ask Greg Gagne what he did after the AWA went out of business. History is definitely cyclical, that's for sure.

Im convinced the reason Warner Discover and TBS/TNT keep telling Tony his low rated unwatchable show is great and that they are happy with the ratings is so they can lowball him next go around and be like well while we are satisfied with your show and ratings, you are lower than before so now we will pay less.
I dont see how or why they would possibly pay more for this when its exponentially worse than it was the first time around.
Tv executives are chess players. This is a perfect example.
Two possible reason. Scripted content is more expensive after the strikes and less of it is being produced. So AEW may still be attractove to the networks for supplying new content with a devoted audience.
The other reason why they may get a same dollar renewal or a sligjt increase is that on the past several years there has been a massive erosion in the value of the dollar. So Tony may end up getting a better deal than people expect but it actually was a paycut when factoring in inflation.
The other possibility is MAX takes in the PPVs into streaming exclusives. Doing to AEW what Peacock and soon Netflix did with WWE.
All I can say is… meanwhile WWE is in France for Backlash and will be in Saudi Arabia in June… but, having an international audience doesn’t matter. But, Wembley was the shit.
Gonna be in Germany and Scotland this year too for Bash In Berlin & Clash At The Castle. 😉

They will definitely lose Australia as soon as possible. The broadcaster already airs it at random times and cuts out segments to get the show back down to two hours. The network clearly stopped caring about AEW at least six months ago.

Yeah, I was excited when AEW first debuted and was excited for guys like Kenny Omega and some of the newer talent I hadn't really heard of or seen from the Indies... I wanted to see what the fuss was all about. I went in with a positive, excited attitude, eager to see what they had to offer. I WANTED to like it.
And I was disappointed, and the disappointment grew, and it got stupider and more dipshitty and finally I just gave up and said "fuck this shit" and stopped watching.

Stopped watching after seeing 2022's revolution Adam Cole vs Hangman. Never looked back for nothing more than CM Punk and MJF highlights.
Tony Khan showed up to the TV rights negotiations with the Cagemarch ratings instead of the verifiable viewership data, and they noped out of the room.

It's what about 50-60 million dollars a year right now? I can't see them wanting to pay that kind of money again especially since the ratings have dropped off so much and they haven't sold out an arena for tv in like 80 weeks...
It's dirt cheap and gets the network 750k on a Wed. Aew will sign a new deal with WBD for a large sounding number. Dave will tout it as a massive success. AEW will lose more and more money. It will continue until Tony's allowance/inheritance exhausts itself

What gets me about AEW is that there is no continuity in story lines. It's just a bunch of random matches thrown together. No long running feuds, it's just some guys nobody has heard of randomly wrestling each other without any run up or promo. They should know better - they have JR and he was the top booker for WWE for years. Why don't they listen to JR? Surely he is trying to coach them to go in the right direction.
That’s the thing the AEW locker room thinks like Tony they can do no wrong once they receive an ounce of criticism they cry to Uncle Dave on the internet and that person giving advice like J R trying to help is called a cancer or is treated as the worst human in the world. The fans, Tony, the locker room all of AEW is too soft for any criticism or being told try doing different things.

AEW is a “safe” parallel to what the UWF was. Herb is just a more extreme version of Tony and as time progresses we’ll see the wrestlers of AEW talk about that promotion just like UWF people did on the dark side documentary.

5 years ago AEW had the unpredictable new starter element and the Vince at WWE element to it. The world has seen what AEW is and as a result ratings are dropping. Vince is gone so ratings are rising for WWE. It’s not going well.

Average fans want 7 star characters and stories, not matches. Hence why Avengers Endgame wasn't the best movie ever but the most profitable while Citizen Kane is barely known these days.
