This was one of the best explanation of this crisis I've heard. Very simple and to the point. I was 11 years old in 1962 and terrified when this happened!
I am student of diplomacy from Slovakia, I have to learn all conflicts in a history in a few days and your video helped me a lot, much easier than studying from the books.. So thanks a lot , what u r doing is very meaningful and helpful.. I'm gonna check your others videos
katarína lionesski Kan Academy is the man!
Ñ
Right or wrong, you have to give credit to both Kennedy and Khruschev to have sorted this out via diplomacy. Thanks to their mutual desire to not look weak, they both avoided nuclear war - which would have made the world a very different place today.
Ketan Kan Academy is the man !
Loved the comment about how "the Soviets are always talking about labor", hilarious! Good work on these history videos!
I'm not currently studying this. I just love History lol
I dont have a test, quiz, or currently taking a history class, but for some reason, I can;t stop watching this, WE WANT MORE!!!!!!!!!!
love your approach!
Love these history lessons, very underrated. I wish you would have mentioned operation Northwoods though.
well explained. I like how the entire narration was kept apolitical, which is not easy.
hello i survive this time in history, i recall , anti aircraft missile falling from a truck in caretera central caimito near san antonio de los banos cross from my house.nise work. God speed
This is so informative and helpful! Thank you for the video!
Thank you very much for teaching important periods and events in history. 😊
The difference between the proposals was due to power struggles in the USSR itself. It shouldn't be forgotten that Kruschev was himself fearful of being seen as a weak figure too and feared the Soviet military was plotting a coup against him - and indeed he was disposed as a consequence of what was seen by the Soviet military as a humilation.
I must say, I am honored to be one of Sal's first supporters a few years back.
wow u taught me more about the cuban missle crisis in 20 mins then my history teacher did in a week!
Thanks for the video! I've really enjoyed it :D
why dont you talk about the soviet submarine who cancel their attack? that part is awesome.
that is actually so true. That third guy just saved the world.
Vasili Arkhipov for the win!
I'm liking these history videos. Since I've subscribed I've mostly only seen science and math. Good to see you branching out.
Thank you! This really helped😆
This is so helpful
omg thank you for this im taking history next year and this will help
the science and maths vids are very helpful but these history vids are actively addictive! :\
thank you so much for the video! now i understand about the cuban missile crisis 1962 :]]
You neglect to mention the Summit meeting between Khrushchev and Kennedy in June 1961. At that Summit, by Kennedy’s own admission (“He savaged me.”), Khrushchev browbeat and berated Kennedy, making him look feckless and unprepared. This emboldened Khrushchev to erect the Berlin wall in August 1961 and almost certainly led Khrushchev to think that he could get away with putting nuclear missiles in Cuba. Khrushchev remarked to his interpreter: “This man is very inexperienced, even immature. Compared to him, Eisenhower is a man of intelligence and vision.”
This information comes from books by Richard Reeves (“President Kennedy”), Michael Beschloss (“The Crisis Years: Kennedy and Khrushchev”) and Donald Kagan (“On the origins of war”).
If Kennedy had demonstrated strength and resolve in Vienna in June 1961, we probably would not have had the Berlin wall or the Cuban missile crisis. People and personalities matter.
this has helped me alot :L thanks so much
Very Interesting Thank you, keep them coming
Yeah, once the History playlist is more developed it will be such a resourceful library for its information and entertainment value. I would rather watch these videos than the history channel on television.
Great work!!
I always think communication between enemies while at war/on the brink of war is a really interesting thing to look at, it seems really strange that people can still negotiate even when they are mortal enemies.
This is great. Thanks Mr. Salman
good info thanks bro
Very interesting video, thanks.
this is so useful
Scary times. Good video.
It was my understanding that the main reason for the requirement by the U.S. that the removal of the missiles from Turkey not be disclosed was that removal of our missiles at that time would have violated the NATO treaty and they did not want their NATO allies to know.
jwt242 Initially that's was correct. The Nato missile system was suppose to be a rapid response deterrence to a possible Soviet invasion that Western Europeans feared.
More history videos please!
Just in time for the AP tests! :D
the way you teach here is way better how the teacher at my school teaches :]]
@river777runner I had a teacher who was great at that, even if it completely opposed his opinion, he would always add both sides of each argument, it really made learning so much better when you have two perspectives.
Hi, Sal. Can I request? Can you make a long video or combine multiple videos to one and arrange mutually exclusive timelines paralleled so we get to understand the whole world history in just one video? Because some of the incidents would be connected to each other and it is difficult already to align your history videos and mentally connect the dots. It would make things a lot easier for us or at least for me If I am not being too selfish, Thank you! And please keep uploading your videos......!
Awesome vids mate. Could you comment on the Hawaii Annexation and perhaps the American Samoa takeover. Im interested in your comments on those. Thanks
Sal saying he would read that letter made me think about him reading actual books. I'd love to hear your voice in "A Brief History of Time" or similar. Oh! Read the American Constitution!
Nice ..
I would look up any technical stuff that was needed for a job or an exam, including fundamental math, science and economics concepts. I think it is better to get videos on history or geopolitical type economics. I think videos like this history set, or like the ones that explained the China-USA currency situation would be more popular. Videos about who is likely to win present wars (rather that who has the moral highground) would also be good.
It was weird hearing Sal explaining History...
KHAN ACADEMY DOES HISTORY?!?!? DUDEE
i wish he was my history teacher back in the school days :(
nice
Can you tell me the software you are using to arrange the images, text, etc. on a board in front of you. Thanks!
computer science!!! i really want you to say HELLO WORLD! java would be best, but c or c++ is good also. i have to admit that qBasic would make my day : )
you are right Gary!!! how can Harold trust politicians words so blindly.
Das ist gut Mir learnt die cüban es dir
Can we get a video just about the cold war?
If I remember correctly, it was Eisenhower and not Kennedy who decided to send the exiles to Cuba.
JFK did
The plan was laid during Eisenhower's administration, and JFK just gave the green light
It was IKE's plan that JFK inherited when he took office.
your videos help a lot. the inly thing is you hesitate a lot please work on that it is a distraction🙏
@Degotelo ikr?
We used to learn these from books.
@noxure that is assuming that cuba would not have changed in the past four decades as a reaction to trade with the U.S. ... I think the very reason they don't have a significant private market is that they can't really have much of a foreign trade market. With the point about the "corporation that owns an island" I have to disaggree strongly. It would be one heck of an inefficient corporation. Market protection never really works the way it was intended anyway....
Well, what decision would you make
@RonBurgundy161 Really? Cool!
So who played the chicken here? USA or the Soviets?
Put more MY AP EXAM IS ON MAY 6.
i subscribed for math. I'm watching this for shits and gigs :)
Eisenhower would have provided air support for the Bay of Pigs invasion.
@HostingReviews1 This is not just theory. After 40 years all countries have to freely give out all documents unless it endangers the lives of people such as witness protection and undercover agents. Anyone can access the private documents that countries handed eachother in private. Some of them are truly interesting.
What I don't understand is why the USA didn't just remove the missiles from turkey. From what it sounds is that neither side wanted to back down
Dynamo7 well this Khan academy leaves out important points. The situation was far more complicated. Placing Missiles in Turkey and Italy was part of a Nato decision not just a American decision. Western Europe did not trust the Soviets especially because of Stalin's reign and what happened post Ww2 with Soviets refusing to release Eastern Germany and Poland. Forming the Iron Curtain and later the Berlin wall didn't help, and it was no secret that Stalin had made military plans for conquest of Western Europe (whether we would do it given the opportunity was another story). The west was unsure where Khrushchev fits in, but, his actions (a bit anti-Stalinism) was still quite hardliner (especially the Berlin wall). A Soviet mechanized invasion would have been massive and feared unstoppable by conventional means. The cuban Missile system was setup as a first strike system. The Turkey/Italy system was setup as a rapid response system. A deterrence to a possible Soviet conventional invasion of western Europe.
Most newer generations make the mistake of thinking the cold war was America vs Russia. It was US/Nato vs the Soviet/Warsaw pact. Many countries were involved on both sides
DigitalMedia JamesT u made a complete baseless assertion when u said that the missiles in turkey and italy were for defensive measures where as in cuba it was for first strike capabilities heck the missiles were placed in cuba BECAUSE of the missiles placed in turkey and italy and what you said about multiple countries being involved is irrelevant as u made it sound like it justified America placing missiles in foreign countries but u didnt imply the same for russia- at the beginning u said khan academy left off many important facts of which u either didnt say or the ones u did hold no relevance (such as more countries being involved and the one about stalin wanting to take over western europe *as if america didnt look for the expansion free market capitalist economic systems) basically cuba did what America did in response to america then america got mad abt it
domenic coolguy
*Its not a baseless assertion but I can see how you arrived at that. So I will try to clarify. The Soviet missiles in Cuba were a First strike offensive system. I’m not saying Khrushchev was wanting to start a war. In fact, Khrushchev never ever wanted to have a nuclear war. But he did not like West Berlin, and he wanted to swing the Cold war balance into his favor so he could dictate diplomacy with Kennedy on his terms (and he view Kennedy as young and weak). The Jupiter missiles in Italy and Turkey were outdated junk and not much of a threat. Khrushchev knew that too. Many people in the US state department couldn’t fathom why Khrushchev cared so much about those crappy Jupiters. Well, a crappy threat is still a threat and Khrushchev was going to use those Jupiters as an excuse to put missiles in Cuba. Because, his real agenda was to swing the world political ball in his favor not the defense of Cuba or the removal of the jupiters.*
_"what you said about multiple countries being involved is irrelevant as u made it sound like it justified America placing missiles in foreign countries but u didnt imply the same for Russia"_
*Here are one of the factors this video misses. The Cuban missile crisis was also a buildup from what was happening in western Europe. Italy and Turkey are NATO members. Do you know what that means? That means all NATO members have an obligation to one another and all are to work together for the defense of NATO. That’s why NATO has a saying, “An attack on one is an attack on all.” The Jupiters were a counter-strike deterrence to hit Moscow if the Soviets/WARSAW pact ever invaded any part of NATO (especially West Berlin). The Soviets had the largest Tank force in the history of Mankind. Way way way more than needed to be a defense force against NATO. A force that size only has one purpose….Invasion (or the cold war threat of it)! NATO did not have the manpower and conventional weaponry to stop a massive Soviet tank invasion. A nuclear deterrence was the only counter option.*
*CUBA is not a WARSAW PACT member and therefor the Soviets had no obligation to its defense. Its fate did not affect Soviet/Warsaw pact security. Also! America has a bigger concern here. Cuba was a very new and distant ally just recently taken over by Castro who was a radical revolutionary. A revolutionary they really know very little about. Putting missiles on a foreign soil (which was already very uncharacteristic of the Soviets) controlled by a radical hot-head revolutionary who (unlike Khrushchev) had no trouble using those missiles against the USA if he felt desired. What if one day he felt that an alliance with the Soviets was no longer in his best interests and decided to cut ties while keeping the missiles? What if some other radical assassinates him and takes the missiles?*
_"at the beginning u said khan academy left off many important facts of which u either didnt say or the ones u did hold norelevance"_
*Because the Cuban missile crisis was way way way more complex than he describes and far more complex than you realize. For me to address them all would be to write a very long essay! Look how long this post if getting and I have even gotten into the depth of the crisis yet! I would have to wind the clock back a few hundred years just to establish a back story to all this.*
The U.S. did remove then in the final deal, but what is generally not known is that JFK had a plan already to move them because they were already seen as obsolete. The offer was that we would promise to remove them within six months but the Soviets could not make that part of the deal public. This would give Krushchev the chance to save face by claiming to hardliners in the Russian government that he had extracted a deal with the U.S. that was in the Soviet's interest. But the general public could not know the important detail that they were obsolete. The U.S. saved face by not going public with the deal. The already obsolete missles were removed six months later rather than immediately so as not to raise speculation that the missles had been part of a deal and moved under duress. The U.S. also agreed to publicly announce that they would agree not to invade Cuba in the future. Krushchev claimed a "moral victory" but spent the next two years trying to convince himself that he had won that victory. This was the beginning of his downfall as Soviet premier. In October of 1964, much of America was tuned in to game 7 of the World Series when an special report broke in to the broadcast. Nikita Krushchev had stepped down as Soviet premier. Apparently, it had happened probably two to three days earlier but became public knowledge on that day.
Its the US which retained its machismo by not declaring in public the withdrawal of missiles from Italy and Turkey!
The Bay Of Pigs makes the Crisis not seem as serious. :P
Ok
So now that the Soviet Union is gone, who protects Fidel's regime?
HOW CAN YOU NOT BE A PARTNER??
Like US removed the missiles from Turkey and Italy....
LoL
@noxure They had to turn it down given prior policy. Not that the actual prior policy was sane, though. Also, the U.S. can afford to pay for it's own health care if it wanted to.... They don't really need to have child death rates higher than libya....
Cuba
so kennedy kinda lost in both bay of pigs invasion and cuban missile crisis
Dude Russia will smoke America like a blunt if America think of starting any war 👿👿👿
anyone watching from India.. like plzz
@SalsaTiger83 I know, considering that the health and safety of your own citizens should have priority over that's exactly what I meant. And yes, off course; but the main issue is getting enough qualified personnel over there as fast as possible. Money only helps in the aftermath.
The irony is that a poor country like Cuba is unique because it has so many doctors it could afford to send a lot of them over there without impeding their own healthcare system.
@Degotelo And your just now worrying about this?
KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN
Khrushchev*
Well i do !! lol
Nobody woulda judged you of being weak for not engaging in an activity that could've killed millions of people around the globe.
Black Ops :D
History is an important subject. Also a controversial one. But I'd love to meet Americans with a better grasp of non-american history or politics in the future... Of course not all US-Americans are *that* bad, but I often have the impression they don't know a lot. Just not a focus of their educational system....
@KoolThing14 haha I have been Studying but he teaches way better.
And we would have been involved in yet another unnecessary war at the cost of more lives.....
What ! Me worry ?
@HarmonicaWarrior and how it doesn't work*
@trublu97
CIA of 1962 != CIA of 2003
nice khan, playing with "official" history, is it really worth to promote what "they" say is true?
@XtruxtioN Uhhhhhhh.... you're wrong..... A socialist nation is a nation which controls all its means of production... theoretically a democracy could be socialist. A communist nation is run by the people in which all are equal Cuba was communist or in the process of accepting communism. Marx stated communism could not occur until about 100 years after the people had destroyed former gov and eventually everyone would be equal.
@doomsword86 To appear strong and not admit mistakes. Of course, in all other countries they intend to increase internet coverage and maybe even dissidence through that, while in Cuba they take steps for that not to happen. Also I sometimes think the sanctions on Cuba are meant as some kind of "showcase of a failing communist economy", while communists would argue communist Cuba would thrive if it wasn't for the sanctions. All a big kindergarden of politics if you ask me....
cud you pls caling ussr russia dont ignore the other republics
@doomsword86 I don't think it's all for show. They are not gaining anything from doing business with a country that doesn't have a private market.
In fact, by isolating them they are protecting their own market because a communist regime playing the free market is like competing against giant corporation that owns a huge island with eleven million employees at it's disposal.
China on the other hand is/was different story because they have (partially) opened their market for foreign investors.

Conventional wisdom has taught us for the past 60 years that JFK’s the biggest hero, he’s still a god. The Cuban missile crisis, doesn’t matter what it is. If it’s JFK, he’s brilliant, he’s the best, he’s great, it’s Camelot. Howerver, 1982, Mary Beth Norton and several others took a very different approach in a college textbook widely used today in Advanced Placement courses. They said Kennedy ‘pursued civil rights with a notable lack of vigor.’ They blamed him for the missile crisis, saying Cuban-Soviet fears of invasion were stoked by the 1961 Bay of Pigs landing and other United States moves against Cuba. They said Kennedy’s real legacy was ‘a huge military expansion that helped goad the Russians into an accelerated arms race.'”
So in advanced placement courses in America universities from 1985 on, Kennedy is blamed for the missile crisis; Kennedy is blamed for the Soviet arms buildup because of his numerous efforts, starting with the Bay of Pigs, to invade Cuba.
