Great job Pete! I used those Baldwins for years an it is nice to see they use that upper bypass valve but it seemed like the quality was slipping the last time I bought one. The one you see here is different than the ones i was using the last few years. That's why I switched to the purolator. When I was checking, the Purolator actually cross matched in three separate listings so I went with it. That Deere filter is actually 11 years old, I bought one when I bought the mower but went with Baldwins when I changed the oil.
You weren't lying when you said that Deere filter was tiny. I was going to ask you were the rest of it went!
Oh, FYI, They are mounted horizonally. on the side of the engine.

Automotive application filter L10241(3614) vs two OPE filters, Baldwin and JD. If they fit the automotive application, always the better value over OPE. Second time seeing Puro with the (Champ Labs/Fram type) separate nonintegrated dome type bypass. JD looks to be 10 years old, using a Champ Labs "clicker" type bypass used on their lowest tier filters. Baldwin, kinda sloppy with the glue. PL10241, FTW here. Thanks for vid.

It is actually 11 years old. I bought it when I bought the mower, but threw it in the cabinet and left it there. Been using the Baldwins for years but this last filter, the one you see, seemed "different" than previous ones I installed. So I switched.

@aron6465 Yeah, I rounded it off to 10, should have put a ~ before it. Made May 2013. Nothing special, but at least it has silicone adbv, which I think more recent JD use nitrile. And some may use combo valve too rather than separate dome bypass.

These filters will also fit on Cub Cadets with a Kohler 7000 series engine. Looks like even after thickness is accounted for, the Purolator STILL gives you 40% more media than the John Deere OE. For reference, the JD is going to run you $8.94 at Walmart (possibly more at the John Deere dealer) while the Purolator can be had for $6.49 at Tractor Supply.

I think lawn equipment filters have a lower bypass opening pressure. Don't know what the oilpump specs are. However if you use a bigger standard automotive filter the bypass valve probably never opens because there is an excess on filtermedia unless you run the engine for 10 years and never change your oil. Indeed most filters on lawntractors are mounted sideways. Bypass at the top of the filter is then still a better location. On B&S Vanguard engine we went for standard oversized oilfilter and prefilled it as much as possible for horizontal mounting). Do keep in mind that lawntractors are mostly run at moderate to higher outdoor temperatures. So oil will not be so thick that it activates the bypass.

The newer production jd oil filter of tbe same part # use louver core now. I work at a jd dealership in the lawn and garden side, and noticed when changing out that filter during a service every other 6 filters, that the anti drain back valve will be folded and protruding through 1 hole in the baseplate. Doesn't make sense to me cause the oil should be flowing through pushing it away.
