  • Summer brain drain-or the summer slide-affects students of all grades across the country.
Research shows elementary school students lose an average of 20% of their school year gains in reading over summer breaks. And if they fall behind, they’re more likely to widen the achievement gap as time goes on.
Former teacher and principal Brandon Cardet-Hernandez, who now works as Chief Strategy Officer for Mrs. Wordsmith, joined ARC Seattle anchors Steve McCarron and Tyrah Majors to talk about the issue of summer brain drain and how big of a problem it is.

The “reading on grade level” is the fault of the school.
I have been on PTA teams that come in to coach challenging students.
Some of these are difficult for parents to diagnose.
Sending the kids to Summer Camps is GREAT!
Day Camps at Community Centers works well too.

100% My Mom made sure I was reading during summers. She gave me the joy of reading, as she loved to read.
