  • In this video I'll be running you through an Irish folk guitar chord progression and unusual strumming technique used by Dennis Cahill. The clip I show is from a live performance with Martin Hayes Live at the Irish Arts Centre, NYC, which you can watch in full here:
    • Martin Hayes & Dennis ...
    I should point out that in the B part of the clip, the second and third time through Dennis Cahill actually plays a slight variation on the chords I show. You can find diagrams for the variation on the accompanying blog for this video which is available here:

    You can find hundreds more free folk guitar guide videos on the Folk Friend website, folkfriend.co.uk/
    If you'd like to buy a whole album of Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill, I particularly like Live in Seattle, which you can buy at this link: amzn.to/2KUOfJe
    Of course all their albums are brilliant and if you like more orchestral, arranged sounding folk music then check out The Gloaming too.

    May he rest in Peace. His playing is unequalled, and their communion was a Gift, a divine encounter ❤. I so agree to your take on him (and Martin Hayes) 🦋🙏

    nice explanation of the strumming technique!! very useful!
    But the c chord and the d chord are played on first string (strumming g) and the 4th and 5 th string! watch the video and you'll see mr Cahill playing 4th and 5th string. the c chord is on both 5th fret and the d chord is 4th string 5th fret and 5th string 7th fret. that adds more feeling into it.

    I hadn't heard of Dennis Cahill until he passed away RIP. I listened to a bit of that clip. He seemed to use a very percussive, almost atonal style. You might get the same effect from the old washboards that used to feature in Jug Bands and Skiffle Bands. That's perfectly alright of course as the music known as Irish traditional music was never meant to be backed with diatonic chords - bad news for guitarists of course, but there are plenty of other genres where the guitar can feature. The beauty of Irish Traditional music is in solo or unison playing and its use of subtle variations on western tempered tuning. Did Mr Cahill ever play the melody of any of those tunes or was he always playing accompaniment?

      @folkfriend  Před rokem

      Yes, he often switched to melodies- check out the live in Seattle recording, that's one of my favourites!

    I thought that Dennis tuned mainly to DADGAD? I guess not? In any case, thanks so much. This was enlightening.

      So far as I know he generally uses standard tuning as he started out on classical guitar. Glad you enjoyed the video :). There are loads more on Https://folkfriend.co.uk/videos/

      Hello! You absolutely can- unfortunately Amazon have decided to block my book sales at the moment (why that is I'm not too sure- they're currently reviewing the case). In the meantime if you'd like the paperback then please get in touch through the contact page at folkfriend.co.uk/contact/ and I'll send one over to you!

    Looks like he does a pinky stretch up to the 7th fret on the B part. And it's bloody painful to try hahaha

      A few hours on the pinky rack every day and you'll have it in no time 💪

    Is he an actual Zen master? What's the backstory there?

    • @folkfriend
      @folkfriend  Před 2 lety

      Haha no, he just plays perfect chords with very few notes!
