  • This video describes step by step how to plot a route in Google maps, transfer it to your Garmin device and then navigate it.
    Correction. At 6:55 this is not a glitch, the two points are the start point and the end point of the route. Because the titles are so long they look the same so I thought this was a glitch.

    Note: Google seem to change the route to "My Maps" on a regular basis. If you don't see it in the search bar navigate to this URL: www.google.com...

    If your route is just showing a straight line from A to B make sure your GPS is plugged in to the computer. One the GPS is plugged in Basecamp will load the detailed map from the device. To check that you are using the detailed map click *View **---**> Tool Bars --> Map Products.* This will show a menu showing the map that you are currently using. If it says *Global Map* then that is the wrong map and you need to plug the GPS in. The detailed map name usually starts with *City Navigator...*. For reference the *Global Map* that comes with Basecamp is just so that when you boot it up it doesn't show a blank screen. The *Global Map* is pretty useless for doing any routing or navigation.

      Hi jobybyrne. Thanks for your so useful video. I have managed to create and import two routes and on the GPS it looks fine. But on the second route there are two lines on Basecamp, the one that I plotted and a straight line. On the Garmin I get two courses (one with the name and another one with a 1 at the end). Either of them seem to be taking me directly to the destination. Since I’m on the motorbike I can’t stop to check all the details. Regardless it wont follow the route, I have to check the screen at each intersection to be sure that I follow the pink line, it won’t even give instructions. Any idea what could be wrong with the parameters?

      @@mgumodena Hi. Sorry I didn't reply earlier. This could be an issue with the map or the activity profile. If you send me the route (email is in the about section of my channel) I'll get a look at it.

      Hi Jo, great Demo. Can you tell me how to alter the route as you can in Google maps, it seems that you cant drag and drop the route to where you want or put avoid m ways or tolls.

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  Před 5 lety

      Hi @@bill0868. I've actually been looking at that today. If you create a route from the track directly it doesn't create any via points so you can't edit it with out it recalculating and going wrong. To address this if you import the route as described at 11:25 and first select the activity profile *Direct* and specify the number of points you want to have on the route (the route distance divided by 4 is a good rule of thumb so if the route is 100 miles (or kilometers) specify 25 points). Once it has created the direct route change the activity profile to *Driving* and it will create a driving route based on the specified number of points. You can now use all the route editing tools to edit the route and it will only recalculate the bits you've changed and won't wreck the whole route. If it's still not working contact me (email is in teh about section of my channel) and we can do a screen share or something.

    At 6:56 you mention that there are 2 options for start point and you guess that it is a glitch - I believe that they are different. As best as I can tell, if you select the top option, the device will take you first to the starting point of the trip. If you select the bottom one it will take you to the end of the trip. Obviously this makes no difference if you are, in fact, at the starting point, but if you are already somewhere along the way you would want to select the bottom option so that the device will continue the trip and not try to take you all the way beck to the beginning again. Thanks for the video - it helped me a lot!

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  Před 9 lety

      John Demetre Thanks. I think you are right they are the beginning and end waypoints. On my video about how to plot a route from Waypoints it's a lot clearer when I go to start the route. When I made the video I wasn't expecting it to show me that screen so guessed it was a glitch.

  • @pusserhill
    @pusserhill Před 8 lety

    I had every expectation that this would work for me. Everything, step by step from your video was excellent until the final stage of importing the route and allowing my Garmin Nuvi 775 to calculate the route. Once the route was on screen, it was clear that it had changed from my intended plotted route. I am going to try this again just to be sure the first time wasn't a fluke. I note that you have a number of points in your route, I had only start and finish but my original was the way I wanted to go.

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  Před 8 lety

      +pusserhill This could be an issue with the difference between the Google map and the map on your device. Google maps are not super accurate so sometimes the points are slightly off the road you intend to use. Other than that it could be the route calculation method and avoidances specified on your device which are causing the issues. If you change the profile on your device to remove avoidances that may follow the route more accurately. I'd suggest you try and plot the same route using this method czcams.com/video/U75KTv-dxB0/video.html this uses the actual map on your device and should help you rule out whether it is a map issue.

    Thank you for the instructional video - well done. Unfortunately, it demonstrates two key points: 1) Google Maps is very easy to use for creating routes and 2) BaseCamp is absurdly complex. @JosephByrne  Před 8 lety

      +Fred Coale I acknowledge there is a bit of a learning curve with Basecamp, however, once you are past that it is a really useful tool. I think since the iPad and iPhone were released people no longer want to spend time learning to use software before they start using it which is where frustrations arise. It really doesn't take much time to get up to speed with Basecamp and once you have that knowledge there is a lot of useful things you can do with it.

    Just for interest I used the Mac version of BaseCamp which achieves the same thing but is a little different. You can't double click the import track, you right click and choose 'create route from track', and layout is a bit different.
    Also, my Garmin is a Nuvi 2445. Once transferred the unit gave me no notification of the new route, it was just there in the 'plan a trip' section. I guess that's just down to the functionality of the unit.

    Thanks Jobybyrne,
    very good video and appreciate the effort including showing the Zumo in action on the road. There was one part in your video you skipped over rather quickly (at 6.56') where the Zumo shows different points to start from. THAT is the confusing part to me as I create my routes by selecting towns I intend to drive through instead of drawing like you do. Those point end up becoming waypoints when imported into Garmin and they show up in that list you see on your screen at 6.56.
    I never know what that is for because the ZUMO should know where I am so why do I need to tell it where to start from ?? As far as I can figure its meant to decide which waypoint you want to travel to and the ZUMO reclaculates your best route to that waypoint ignoring a more curvy route you may have had plotted.
    Here is the big problem, ones you get to the first waypoint on that list and don't stop, because you just wanted to travel through that spot, Zumo thinks that you missed it and tries to reroute you back to the missed waypoint messing up the whole route. HOW DO YOU AVOID THAT ?? Sorry about the long winded reply but this has been bugging me for a while. Keep upi the good work
    Cheers

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  Před 9 lety

      Hi Joe. From my understanding if you plot a route with waypoints, when you go to navigate it, the Zumo shows the screen to select the next destination in case you want to start the route from a specific point. For example if you had a long route and you only wanted to do the 2nd half you could select a waypoint half way round the route and then it will navigate you to there using the calculation mode selected e.g. Fastest Time and then take you round the rest of your route from there. For some reason when I imported the route from Google Maps it plotted the waypoint for the start of the route twice, I've seen that on the Basecamp screen now I've checked so that's why it showed up twice. If I'd plotted a route using multiple waypoints, those would have all showed up on the "Select Next Destination" screen.
      With regards to passing way points I have experienced that phenomenon before and I appreciate how frustrating it can be. To use an analogy the Garmin sees route waypoints like physical flags stuck in the ground (like you might use for mini golf) that you have to go and pick up in order to continue the route. If you miss one (because it was placed slightly wide of the road etc.) It wants you to go back and get it and will keep re-routing you until either you go back for it or you continue riding in the right direction until the next waypoint is closer than the one you missed.
      So if you pass a waypoint and it keeps routing you back to it either continue to the next waypoint (if you know roughly where it is) and ignore all the re routing, or stop the route and initiate it again choosing the next waypoint on the "Start from" screen.
      In my early days of navigation I had lots of incidents like this for example I'd be riding along a country lane and then veer off onto a dirt road to pick up a flag and then be instructed to, "make a U turn when possible." Part of the learning experience I suppose although in the UK we also refer to these as "schoolboy errors" of which I've made plenty.
      Thanks for your feedback on the video. If there is anything you'd like to see on the channel let me know.

I was wondering that when you make a custom route with a start and an endpoint. If you start the navigation when you leave home, does it take you to the start point first and then seamlessly transition into the custom route?

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes if you choose the start point it will navigate you to the start of the route and then start navigating the route. Effectively it modifies the route slightly to include the fist step of getting you from where you are to the start.

    So after importing the route, the 590 will calculate the route. It does that according to the settings on the unit as opposed to the settings you had on Basecamp where you created the route. Yes/no? If so, you can end up with a completely different route that still goes through your via points but can go along all the wrong roads. Especially if you have reduced the number of navigation points down to 25. e.g. if you have a section of motorway already on the route you'd have to make sure "avoid motorways" is unchecked. But the route calculation on the 590 could then send you onto other sections of motorway if it thinks that's faster, shorter or whatever other settings you have. Trouble with all this is that you don't know or realise until after you have fired up the route to start your ride.

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  Před 7 lety

      You can check the route on your device as shown at 6:12. I'd recommend you do that as part of the planning stage. If the route is not the one required you can then refine it in basecamp and check it again. When you send the route to the device it recalculates based on the algorithm on the device which is different to that on the PC. Due to this sometimes it will not route exactly as you've plotted it on you PC. However, with experience it becomes easier to get it right first time.

    • @blacktiger955i
      @blacktiger955i Před 7 lety

      And that's exactly the problem. You shouldn't have to check it after you've imported it to the satnav. You've used the Garmin program to create the route and so it should appear on the satnav as you designed it. Otherwise you might just as well create the route on the satnav itself. Garmin have lost the plot since the Zumo550 on which this doesn't happen.

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  Před 7 lety

      The navigation engine is different on the device so that's the way it has to be. As noted once you adjust to it you can plot and navigate without any issues.

    • @blacktiger955i
      @blacktiger955i Před 7 lety

      It's not the way it has to be. It's the way you have accepted it to be. Mistake. The Zumo550 doesn't do it that way so why do the new ones? Probably cheaper to program it that way so bigger profits for Garmin.

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  Před 7 lety

      No I understand the technology so I understand that each route needs to be recalculated prior to navigation so that the unit can match it to the map it's running. It was the same on the 660 and 550.

    Great video. I am using a Garmin Zumo 450/550 motorcycle GPS. I find that if I take the original track between two points and create a route, it creates only a straight line between the two endpoints. My guess is that if I sent that "route" to my Garmin, Garmin would import it only as waypoints, and create its own route. But I AM able to send not the route, but the track -- the original list of waypoints -- to my Zumo. I'm not sure the Garmin will navigate the saved route with voice instructions, but it will certainly show it, and allow me to follow it. Anything you can tell us about these particular Zumo models and the difference between importing a "route" and the actual "track" might be helpful.

      +cmballer1 I am having the same problem, it didn't create the route drawn on google maps but just a straight line. I am using the Garmin 660LM. I think it may have something to do with that I have more than two, I have 3 waypoints installed. When I try to import the .kmx file of the route, from the folder on the PC, into Base Camp, it appears to do it as it flashes up "importing data", but there is nothing in the Base Camp folder I was saving it into, or anywhere else in Base Camp that I can find. I tried numerous times but no joy.

    Excellent video thanks jobybyrne. I'm quote new to route planning, and i'm having difficulties - when I transfer a route across to my Zumo 590, and select the route in trip planner, it only gives me the option to navigate to one waypoint at a time, and if I select say the second or third waypoint, it will take me directly to that waypoint, and not along the route. So when there are waypoints, it seems it does not recognise the route as one route. Any help would be very appreciated, I'm stumped!

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  Před 7 lety

      When you plot a route with waypoints, when you start navigating the route it gives you the option as to which waypoint you want to start from. This is incase you want to start the route half way round or whatever. Once you get to the selected waypoint it will start navigating the route. To check this for yourself go into the device settings and turn GPS off. Then go and execute the route from trip planner. The unit will ask *do you want to simulate driving this route* if you tap *OK* then it will start navigating the route so you can check that all is well.

    @Conundrum191 Před 8 lety

    Question, in the latter half you mentioned it deviated a bit but you didn't mind...how would you go about correcting that in Basecamp if you did? Is it like Google and you just need to drop in an extra point to 'force' it to use that road instead of the one it 'wants'?
    Still debating if I want to spend the money on a Zumo this year or next, and the ability to save and use custom routes is 90% of the reason I might be willing to get it.

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  Před 8 lety

      When you convert the track to a route, choose the "direct" activity profile and when prompted, specify the number of points equal to the number of miles or kilometres of the total route. When basecamp creates the route use the route tools to insert, move and delete points to get it to be closer to what is required. Next change the activity profile from "direct" to "driving." The route will recalculate and should be closer to what is required. If it's still not right you can either continue using the route tools, insert point, move point and erase point until it's correct.

      Hi Tausif
      1. The Zumo 590LM has the ability to do off road navigation. It's one of the navigation preferences.
      2. You may need to plot 2 routes, one using a road activity profile and a 2nd one using the off-road activity profile within Basecamp. I'll look into this.
      3. I think the Zumo only supports the garmin maps. The dashboard mount I'm using is a bean bag type seen here. amzn.to/1C8Rjbr. It didn't come with the device but is a really good alternative to a windscreen mount.

    Very helpful. Is it possible to do this for a route in a country that your Zumo doesn’t have a map for? For example, as you’re in the UK and have Garmin’s UK map already installed, could you create a route in the USA and import it to the Zumo? Or will there be insufficient data because you don’t have the Garmin USA map installed? (I’m trying to figure out how to create an entire map that I can import to my 590. Maybe I can only do that with OSM? I have EU lifetime maps, but I’m now in Australia and I don’t want to buy the Garmin map if I can avoid it).

      Hi Ronan. In order to navigate the route on the device you would need the map for that region. You can purchase additional maps online from Garmin and load them onto an SD card if the device runs out of space, or you could buy a unit locally that has the required maps on it. The device can't navigate a route if it doesn't have the map for that region installed thought. That's an absolute.

    This is a lazy question really and I will go out and experiment, but I'll ask it anyway! What is the behaviour if, when following the route, I deviate from the directions given by the device? Will the device then recalculate the whole rest of the route according to its rules/activity profile? Or will is try and get you back on the route? What if you deviated on purpose around a small section of the route? Would it then try and get you back to the first point you missed, or would it let you follow the rest of the route after the point where you rejoined it? I hope that kind of makes sense!

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  Před 6 lety

      benny532017 Yes it makes perfect sense. If you deviate from the route it will recalculate and navigate you to the next point on the route based on the activity profile. If you do a big deviation and keep ignoring the recalculated route but then ride back onto the route it will realise and continue the route from where you rejoined it. It won't navigate you back to the point you missed unless you turn back on yourself and start riding the route backwards. It always looks for the next logical point on the route you created. One issue you can encounter is if you select the route and choose *Navigate to the start of the route.* If you don't ride over the start point (like if you put the start point in a petrol station and you don't ride into it) the device won't start the route and will keep trying to navigate you to the start point. If that happens press *stop* then initiate the route again and don't choose *Navigate to start of routre.* The device will realise you are already on the route and continue from your current point.

      jobybyrne thank you! Really appreciate the response. I've been feeling a bit annoyed with the few hours I've spent playing with this so far (I'm fairly new to Garmin for motorcycle use, but have been using farming for many years for hot air ballooning so know my way around reasonably well) and I've been wondering why all the complication, i simply want to follow the route regardless of activity profile etc. However I have just made a route and loaded it into OSMand to follow through Italy and Spain and I can now see the reasoning behind most of the Garmin 'quirks.' I think the answer is, you just have to put some hours in learning. One thing that i still can't see the logic in... If you start with a track in basecamp, then convert to a route it calculates that route. If you then export that to the device, upon saying "import" the device then calculates again, and we are hoping that it is calculating the same as Basecamp did i guess. Wouldn't it be nice to eliminate this second calculation step and instead just have the device 'check' that the map the route was made on matches that in the device (and activity profile) and therefore just trust the route? I think that would lead to less confusion unless there's something about this step that I'm missing? That's is again! B

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  Před 6 lety

      When you transfer the route to the Zumo it will always recalculate as the Zumo needs to work out the routing for itself. If you have plotted it correctly and the activity profile you are using on the Zumo matches the one you used in basecamp, for example if it has all of the same route avoidances, then it should match the route even after it re calculates. If it doesn't match that's usually because a route avoidance such as *avoid highways* is enabled on the Zumo. If that is the case change the activity profile on the Zumo and it will re calculate again and should be right second time.

    Great video, thought this was the answer to my prayers! Created the route on My Maps, exported as XML, but when I come to import into BaseCamp I get an error message and the file does not appear in the list.

      Did you have the option to export to KML? Google change things a lot so that may have moved now, but KML is a format you can import into Basecamp.

    Very good video with nice, clear instructions. I do have a question. I'm trying to create a reverse route and I keep getting the message that it's not possible because of one way roads (I suspect it's due to to the exit ramps?). Anyway, Google goes on to say to make a copy of the route and edit the copy. I tried this but the route gets messed up. Do you have any suggestions or advice short of creating a brand new route?

      Import the route you want to do into Basecamp using the procedure in this video to convert it into a route and then use this procedure czcams.com/video/Zk06mnbRr_A/video.htmlm21s to invert it. If it's still messed up, use the procedure described in this video to reduce the number of points that are used to create the route, from there invert the route and delete all the points around the areas where it gets messed up then let the software recalculate and it should work. If you are still having issues contact me using the about tab on my channel and I'll set up an online conference to resolve it.

    Hi , Have you ever tried TYRE it is so easy I use it to plot on google and transfer to my tom tom rider. It seems a lot quicker than your system, I can also email the same route to my mates and they can be on the same route as me when on a long trip.

      +RMG One of my earlier videos covers using Tyre with Garmin devices. It is not ideal because Tyre uses Google Maps which do not match Garmin maps particularly well. For this reason if you plot your route using Tyre and do not check it using Basecamp you may get diverted un necessarily due to inconsistencies with the map. You can share your Basecamp routes with friends either by exporting them or sharing your adventure and sending your friends a link.

    Having just bought a Garmin nuviCam can I use this technique with that device as well? Excellent video. Bravo!

      +James G It should work exactly the same if there is a trip planner on the device. The technique worked on my Zumo 660 also which is several years old now.

    Really great tutorial, I recently purchased a secondhand GPS, Zumo 395 LM. How do I move the lifetime map updates to my own name so that I can download updates and use Basecamp as need be. Thank you.

      Hi Rynhardt. In the first instance you need to contact the person who sold it to you and ask them to *unregister* it from their devices in *My Garmin*. To do this they need to navigate to **my.garmin.com** and from there they can unregister the device. When they have done that, you can subsequently sign into *My Garmin* my.garmin.com and register the device to you. From there you can download the maps. I know this because when I sold my 660 on Ebay the new owner asked me to do the same. If you cannot contact the new owner then you'll need to follow up with Garmin customer support.

    This is actually very complicated, LOL. I just got it and have only been able to create a map on google and download it onto my computer via basecamp and other apps. So how do i get the actual definition and details to appear on the map itself? Or do i have to actually have the map downloaded onto the garmin device before i plot this route and segment of the map?
