Fun Fact: Microsoft's handwriting works perfectly for exactly One person. It was trained on Jerry Pournelle's manuscripts. So, it worked absolutely great for him. RIP Jerry.

I’ll see myself out…
They're great.

Best comment I've ever seen
I don't know the tech behind touch pads/letter recognition, but I know the Nintendo DS did it by recognizing the stroke order of each letter/number. Rather than detecting the 'shape' of the pixels you drew, it was detecting how many strokes in each direction you made to make the letter. That's why in Brain Age or similar games, sometimes you'd write a letter differently from how the DS expected, and it would generate an entirely different letter.
However, you could mess with it because of this. You could make three tiny, quick marks in the correct motions, and it would generate an A. Or, you could make a long, continuous drawing, but as long as you did it in the basic 'strokes' of an R, you could make it detect a picture of a cat as the letter R. The speedrunning TAS community has messed with this, making bots draw complicated artworks in Brain Age's math test, but getting every single answer correct. If you want to see this in action, look up the AGDQ 2016 Brain Age TAS. It's incredible.
Most likely because that's how you write kanji in japanese (so most likely also applies in chinese) because there is a stroke order "top to bottom left to right"-really really oversimplified. There are dozens of rules so yeah, with latin letters we have a lot less problems
If you press the pen and hold it in place the system won't register it as a left click right away because if you hold long enough it will do right click instead. Presumably the hold tool will disable this delay, making it possible to press and hold on a scroll arrow. This doesn't help much with a standard scroll bar where you can drag the slider but does for a "spin box" control where you only have the two arrows.

Nice collection. This is TOTALLY just unfinished projects, that didn't make it to final build, like you said. There's ZERO polish, and I love it.
I am amazed, especially with the physics sandbox, create your own font, and add words to dictionary tools.
Man, this device came in 2005. Today most of the features of this are common on any touchscreen tablet/laptop, but it's beyond what I can imagine.
Love to see your videos
Cheers✨✨
See what an F16 can do? Check out when it was made.
@@BenState a f16 fighter jet?
Hard times fell upon me just yesterday, but I found this upload to be immensely gratifying. Thanks for the upload as usual, MJD!
you became trapped under a falling concrete grandfather clock?
@@vitamins-and-iron I forgot I even commented this, and for the most part I cannot remember the context of the comment... but thanks for the laugh today!
I had one of the first motion computing tablets back in 2000-2001 when I worked at Microsoft. I loved it. I took it to all our meetings and wished it was touch screen. Funny fact I realized it was used later in the Stargate Series Stargate Atlantis. Dr Elizabeth Weir used one in nearly every episode.
I feel really bad for Michael getting judged for his handwriting by a 2000s era OS.
This and the previous video kinda makes me want to install an XP shell for the Surface.
Also, that asymmetrical "aughties cool" aesthetic of the that Art Tool's UI is so nostalgic.
Dang that was fast. Literally a WEEK AGO you covered the experience pack!
This tablet is amazing! I genially didn't thought that a 2005 tablet could be this cool! Keep up the good work MJD!
Windows XP Royale Theme was the best theme for XP, in my opinion. To the untrained eye, it's the same as the Luna theme, but different.
Now all that's left for the PowerToys saga is the Windows XP Media Center Edition ones.
I hope a retrospective video on Internet Explorer is made soon...
(still, great video MJD!)
I love these long format videos, please make more of them!!!
Don’t listen to the above message. It’s a scam.
TabletPC videos from Michael always cheer me up.
Finally! A video that isn’t uploaded at late night in my timezone!
always nice to see you upload Michael
keep up with these xp tablet videos i like learning about this stuff!
Thank you for an awesome video as always!
Awesome video, Michael!
my dog chills out when she hears your voice lol. good content!
snap, the obscure, & dope nostalgia in this video is just boosting-up a lot of memories of Windows X.P. bc i forgot the powertoys even existed.
almost 300k! keep pushing!
Yes drama
I love to watch these videos
Love the Power Paint one! I would love to try that on a modern laptop
Some of these are pretty neat.
Woah, now that’s another kind for experiments.
I LOVE YOUR CONTENT MJD!!!!!!!!!!
Great video so exiting to watch.
You know, if you wrote letters like "e" and "g" correctly it might give you a better time '^ ^ Entertaining video as usual!
Just tried the font tool under Windows 11, still works ^^
I love the tablet!
Love this channel
Pure MJDness
Yeah I was definitely thinking Hold Tool was just rolled into the 2005 version of the OS
The PowerToys font maker ended up being revived as a Windows 10 UWP app.
I think that a lot of this older software tends to recognize lowercase e's only when they start from the middle and go around rather than starting from the bottom and going up and inwards. I saw people having a lot of issues with lowercase e's in particular when games on the DS, cause I'd never have any issue cause I'd start from the middle but any time I'd give the game to someone who wrote e's the other way it would almost always mistake it for something else. The letter that I always had issues with myself was actually lowercase a, cause I would write it without the hook at the top and it would never get it right
the song you composed was actually a really nice melody lol
These were fun.
23:55 Now that you wrote the P and E together I can see why the computer messed them up XD
I am watching this video in the sauna. I am looking forward to seeing some cool tweaks
I strive to embrace the mjdness in my life.
Good video MJDress.
ah yes mjDRESS
Wish I had MS Press
The Math Input Panel came bundled with Windows 7. Also, some Tablet PC accessories under the folder Tablet PC in accessories
i had an older version of one of these motion computing tablets, theyre fun to play around with and if you can find a lightweight linux version it works well for drawing
Lightweight linux:
Linux LITE
@@BOplaid Linux LITE-weight
awesome!!!!
The hold tool might be for different tablets that have different pens that work differently.
I didn't know PowerToys had a tablet version until now
Wow, I was in two minds between Windows XP or 7 tablet (want something cooler to fix older mobiles), if windows 7 doesn't have such cool stuff, I'll buy XP one and pack it to brim with stuff from your last 2 showcases.
You should also make a video on the Education pack for Tablet PC Edition
35:00 - So are you quitting CZcams and starting your music career? 🎶🎵🎹🎹
They were VERY optimistic with that external display one.
Wacom bundled something very similar to “Hoop Strategy Game” with their early Bamboo tablets, with a ball, but there were more obstacles and sound effects and animations.
Edit: ew, the way the pieces lazily rotate and don’t snap to each other very easily in “Puzzle Game” really bothers me for some reason. Also this naming scheme and some of those settings panels really give “unfinished cancelled betas to pad out the pack” vibes for sure.
Power Paint is surprisingly powerful though. But the UI needs some work. I can see why they just slightly spruced up the edges of Win98 paint for XP, but it’s neat they were working on something more powerful for a time. Layers, granular brush settings and pressure sensitivity would have all made some basic painting programs redundant if management had put the work into finishing it.
It happened! 🤯
To be honest windows XP tablet PC is actually kind of cool
I think it's rejecting your "e"s because you're writing them "backwards" from what is normally written. Try starting from the inside of the "e" and see if it picks it up
That's certainly an interesting angel
17:40 I guess in this case it doesn't matter, because tablet PCs (where this PowerToy will mostly be used probably) have an LCD screen.
This video is pure mjdness.
Cool
Dang I'm gonna need an album for that music.
Great✌
18:00 tablet uses LCD which won’t burn so I suppose a static screensaver is ok
It’s much harder to do but it can still happen. I’ve got a near 15 year old LCD screen, which had the same file browser window sitting on it when I wasn’t doing anything else with it. Now there’s a weird scanline looking kind of effect on the portion of the screen where it was, when displaying other stuff. It doesn’t disrupt daily use - but then neither does other screen burn generally.
That basketball game killed me 🤣🤣
What a musical masterpiece lmao, I think a certain Australian Musical Man, *cough* Dankpods *cough* needs to take a look at that.
I'm sorry to say but the issue with handwriting recognition is your writing. The software with good writing works perfect, I remember using these types of things back in the day on xp all the time.
I'm convinced this video gave me luck. For context, in mid 2021 I caught a shiny luvdisc in pokemon Y. I went to show my sister, but my game crashed, and I lost it. I've been hunting for one ever since, and at about 5 minutes in, I ran into one!!!
Dear Mr. Michael MJD (even the my Android keyboard learned your name 😁), thank you so much for showing us these things. As someone living in Turkey, my dear country (😏) where such things are not heard, I have been watching your videos with my little learned English for a few months and I have heard from you for the first time that there are even tablets made with Windows XP TPCE. It's the first time I've heard of many such admirable topics from you (and some other CZcamsrs). It is a great luck that you live in places where such things happen right away. Also, can you try everything in this video on Windows 10 or 11? It'll be pretty fun. You will return to the Tablet PC Edition section after this trial. Say what? 😅
@UCG-b0eRLwonDFfcdpS6x-3Q what the hell man that's not nice
@UCG-b0eRLwonDFfcdpS6x-3Q what is wrong with ur ign, it says ur ign is anon anon
@@Izdl_ I do not understand what you mean. Are you telling me something right now?
the background music when he's playing pool is from The Black Cat in VRChat 😂
Okay does MyFont Tool still work on modern systems? I would absolutely want to make my own font, that looked really sweet!
Look up calligraphr, I think that's what you are looking for
Will this run on a regular installation of Windows? If so, I wonder if it would run on modern Windows!
The Calculator utility is very similar to what the Math Input Panel was, so maybe this was a precursor to that program. I could be totally wrong though…
Great Vid as always!
Thank you!
I recently got a Gateway branded M1300 tablet that had its hard drive blanked and I can't figure out how to reinstall the OS because it cannot boot an external USB or FireWire optical drive, do you have any ideas?
Ooooh!
I have like three of those
Idk if its been said before but im pretty sure the programs arent recognizing the lowercase E you draw is because you write it backwards, i used to do the same before my teacher taught it out of me haha
It's funny how MS couldn't get handwriting recognition to work reliably, but little Palm Computing did in Palm OS Graffiti.
That was a good video Michael! Keep on and you will hit 1M Subs soon!
You should upload these in a zip for other people who are lazy 😂
Or if they get rid of the files
Please do a video on Windows 7 touchpack
Played doom 3 again and forgot how old it was until I received my PDA at the front desk.
Michael nib made us a cool video today
You should try to run ReactOs on that thingy
A chonky tablet with lots of physical buttons, ports, stylus, and XP UI... Why don't they make these today? I'd absolutely love this compared to the unusably limited Android/Apple toy tablets we have today.
Can you make a new Wii soft modding guide
cool
Those are pretty cool, I am interested in learning more, also MJD I wanted to ask you something, I need some words of encouragement as well, I bought a ibm T30 Thinkpad for $20 at a garage sale it came with charger, carrying bag, it has a intel pent 4 inside, runs windows xp, but I wiped it clean, the one thing is that the battery is dead and it’s expensive to get a new one, and it can barely run windows 7 x86, If I reinstalled windows xp, and I hope I can find the drivers, I want to do really cool things with it, and make content with it, but where should I start?
Sounds like you’ve already got a plan - make videos of doing all that with it! And keep a notebook or digital file with a list of a bunch of ideas for it, whether they’re good or bad, you can come back and judge it later. It’s more important to capture fleeting ideas than to judge them in-situ!
26:52 you should have switched the theme to use the font! :D
Anybody gonna talk about mjds banger he made in the composition tool
"Next up is maze game" *_WAR FLASHBACKS_*
do you guys think you could download all old versions of pts on windows 10
MJD FOR OSCARS
Michael mjd Could the tablet be installed windows 7?
The PowerToys on Windows 10 & 11, you don't have to download several separate exe files because it is all in one file
Looks like Mike is operating the Media Center Edition of Windows XP.
25:22 I think you just created a doctor's handwriting font right there
Where can I download the wallpaper?
