How to Make a Chuck & Pulling Fine Handles

- In this week's video I'll show you how to throw a chuck and store it, then I'll use it for trimming and handling a batch of new mugs. The handles of which I'll later carve finer and fettle with a sponge-on-a-stick. I hope there's lots of useful information in here and as always, thanks so much for watching!

Really amazing to be able to think “I wish Florian had a video on making chucks”, and you already have! Thank you for inspiring me to get into pottery, and for all of your teaching.
The finished handle shape is quite elegant. Also it was interesting to see the side by side comparison between the thrown cup and the fired cup. 12% doesn't sound like a huge amount until you see it with your own eyes
12% linear shrinkage means the area shrinks by 23% and the volume by 32%.

But sometimes you get to work in a active/public environment.

Worth making a few leather hard ones if you can - you can even their outsides a little where the rim touches to help them stick better. Thanks for watching as always, Alex!

I recently dealt with all of my reclaim and I have decided to dedicate that reclaim to making cups so that I can get better at making handles. Pulling a nice handle is so hard and so frustrating. You make it look easy, but, of course, you have probably done it 10,000 times. I am hoping that my skills will have improved after having done it a few hundred times - the first few dozen resulted in a lot of frustration and smashed cups back in the reclaim bucket. I am going to have to find my patience and trust the process - and I may have to watch your handle pulling videos a few dozen more times.
I am also going to make myself a chuck. That should help a lot with the project.

While i don’t think I’ll ever attempt pottery, i have eagerly followed your videos for almost a year now because your meticulous process is extremely nice to follow along. Even when i thought i understood how you made handles from watching your other videos i realized there’s a lot more finicky details that were glossed a bit over in them and its amazing to be able to learn about it! The drying conditions vary so much in my community studio that I've given up on making anything with handles for the time being. I can't wait to have my own space so I can easily monitor the stages of drying.

You can control the drying conditions with plastic wrapping.
@@franadav scheduling is also a factor. I can't always reserve studio time the day after I throw, so there are a lot of variables.

You’ve taught me so much! Thank you. How much can one carve the handle ie. if I, say, just pulled a Fred Flintstone-sized handle last night, can the top attachment point be carved down to be slimmer and in alignment with the corresponding thickness of the rest of the handle?

you make it look easy. I find quite difficult to be consistent in thickness of the handles and make them straight/align the top and the bottom attachment point.

Cannot help but think there must be an easier way to make handle. Other than that amazing content and the resulting cup is very elegant.
Thank you! Well, easier doesn’t always mean better. Pulling is definitely a quick and efficient method, the carving adds a bit of time back but not much.
Hi Florian, thank you for the reply, I am a programmer and I've recently joined a pottery class in my neighborhood. You and others have inspired me, thank you for the amazing content. Regarding the pulling, I always wonder if you are not better of using some extrusion method, more specifically what comes to my mind is some sort of Caulkin Gun extruder. That would allow you to have different profile. Anyway, I am an engineer and improving processes is what I like. Continue the good work, you are onto something. Many thanks
