  • Continuing our journey through history, we explore Revelation 12:6 - the Church in the Wilderness - through the experience of the Waldensians. The Waldensians didn't see themselves as reformers needing to be separate to Rome, as they said that they never belonged to it. They have a history dating back several centuries prior to the time of the Apostolic faith. Over the next couple of episodes, we will visit the valleys that they called home, and see where they lived and died. They then saw their faithfulness and commitment to mission and service for God.

I’m a Netzer which is also a waldension, wow this is amazing how you are bringing out the history of the true branch of of the messianics. I had a vision in 1978 and before my eyes a branch formed in front of me, it took forty years for me to realize what it’s significance was, a few months ago Yehovah told me that I was a true branch an original Netzer where we get the Hebrew word branch, and a specific type of branch from an olive tree that it’s root comes up in a distant location from the original tree, even if the has died it will spring forth sometimes hundreds of years later, the very earliest Messianics were called notzerim, as in Yeshua of Nazareth, so Yehovah said to me I’m raising you up in the last days from the root of David (Yeshua) a branch unto YeHoVah, and that I would lead the Children of God home. Thank you for this amazing information

"It is a vulgar mistake, that the Waldenses were so called from Peter Waldo of Lyons. They were much more ancient than him; and their true name was Vallenses or Vaudois from inhabiting the valleys of Lucerne and Agrogne. This name, Vallenses, after Waldo appeared about the year 1160, was changed by the Papists into Waldenses, on purpose to represent them as of modern origin." -John Wesley (1703-1791)

"As for the Waldenses, give me leave to call them the very seed of the primitive and purer Christian church, being those who have been so upheld(as it is clear and manifest)by the admirable Providence of God, that neither those infinite storms and tempest whereby the whole Christian world has been shaken for so many ages together, and at length the Western part so miserably oppressed by that bishop of Rome, falsely so called, nor those horrible persecutions which have been directed against them, were ever able so far to prevail them, as to make them bend or yield a voluntary subjection to Roman tyranny and idolatry." where can we see references for the names used to describe this group in the early centuries eg, Insabati, Subota, Sambata, Isaboid, iwesabata, (like local historical sources) I once stayed in Indonesia for 2 months in 2013 at an SDA college (Unklab Fekon Universitas in Airmadidi, Manado) very beautiful place and so friendly I learned much of the bahasah/language and went to many churches there, I was also baptised in a sea on the coast (Boyon Pantai) there too, but at the time I didn't fully understand what the Pastor was saying but we spent much time at his beach house and his ministry in Teling in Manado (the church were called Agape Pumorrow Advent Gerega) but I learned that the word for Saturday in almost every language is also translated as rest too so the Islamic Indonesians or protestant (GMIM) Indonesians would call Saturday "Sabtu" which means Saturday but also rest, they still rest on Fri or Sun depending on which faith they follow whilst we as Adventists would say Sabat starting Friday at 6pm.... in Indonesia its dark at 6pm every day and light at 6am so no confusion as to when Sabbath should start but in UK we have sunset at 9;30 sometimes its dark at 4pm too

What is the evidence that the Waldenses kept the 7th dad sabbath (for example)? Wouldn't it be a good idea to give some links to historical or primary source material, maybe in the description if you don't want to interrupt the flow of the video? I see that there is a link to an article, but the article is very similar to the video, and doesn't have any references either.

    • @LineageJourney
      @LineageJourney  Před 4 lety +6

Hi Tarquin, thanks for your message. At the bottom of the article on our website you should find a list of books that we used in our research. Just a few additional points to consider
Our back research for the episode is based on research done by Dr Gerard Damstgeet and a cohort of graduate students at the History Department of Andrews University, Michigan.
Dr. Damstgeet used the following primary sources in his research
      1. Moneta and Tommaso Agostino Ricchini, Venerabilis Patris Monetæ Cremonensis ordinis prædicatorum S. P. Dominico Æqualis adversus Catharos et Valdenses libri quinque: Quos ex manuscriptis codd. Vaticano, Bononiensi, ac Neapolitano (Rome: 1743; reprinted, Ridgewood, N.J.: 1964), pp. 475-477.
      2. Johann Döllinger, Beiträge zur Sektengeschichte des Mittelalters (Munich: Beck, 1890), Vol. II, p. 662.
Dr. Damtgeet draws the following conclusions in his research
One of the primary sources of evidence of Waldensian Sabbathkeeping during the first half of the thirteenth century comes from a collection of five books written against the Cathars and Waldensians about 1241-1244 by Dominican inquisitor Father Moneta of Cremona in northern Italy.
Moneta passionately defended himself against criticism from Waldensians and Cathars that Catholics were transgressors of the Sabbath commandment. In the chapter De Sabbato, et De Die Dominico he discussed the significance of the seventh-day Sabbath of Exodus 20:8, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy,” and contrasted it with the value of the Lord’s day, his term for the first day of the week.
Moneta claimed that the Sabbath was for the Jews, pointing out that it was a memorial of Creation and of their liberation from Egypt. The Jewish Sabbath, he said, was “a sign and figure of the spiritual Sabbath of the Christian people. . . . It must be understood, however, that as the Jews observed the Sabbath, so also, we observe the Lord’s day.” He added, “this day we observe as an ordinance of the Church, and it is in reverence to Christ who was born on that day, who rose on that day, who sent the Holy Spirit on that day.”
Moneta continued his dispute by referring to Galatians 4:10, 11, stating, “It is sin to observe days.” He continued by pointing out that circumcision “will be of no benefit to you” (Gal. 5:2, 3, NASB),6 and neither would Sabbathkeeping. Moneta concluded by quoting Colossians 2:16, commenting that “days related to Jewish festivals are not observed, on the contrary, the days instituted by the Church, and that is it.”7
Moneta’s treatise clearly shows that a sizable group of Waldensians and Cathars in northern Italy and southern France during the thirteenth century were worshipping on a day other than Sunday, namely, the seventh-day Sabbath.
Sabbathkeeping among Waldensians was most widespread in Bohemia and Moravia, places to which they fled during papal persecution. A fifteenth-century manuscript, published by church historian Johann Döllinger in History of the Sects, reports that Waldensians in Bohemia “do not celebrate the feasts of the blessed virgin Mary and the Apostles, except the Lord’s day. Not a few celebrate the Sabbath with the Jews.
I hope this answers your question. Let us know if you have anymore, thanks :).

There is no connection between Seventh Day Adventists and Waldensians. I have only had a single true friend that was/is part of the former. However, he was/is a true brother of mine in the Lord. That said, I like the production quality of this brief documentary and the willingness to touch on the Waldensian movement. I am a Reformed (previously Arminian) Southern Baptist whose favorite time period was/is the Middle Ages. Ecumenism via my late maternal grandmother's own best compeer and my father's first wife left me blind to all Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy truly taught/teaches.
Perhaps, professional programs on other brethren gone before us outside the usual shall be made? The Donatists, the priest Vigilantius (an opponent of Jerome [Hieronymus]), and Bishop Claudius [Claudio] of Turin have came/come to mind. Rev. John Wycliffe, Rev. Jan Huss, and Rev. William Tyndall overshadow them alongside Rev. Martin Luther [Ludher].

God protected the light of the truth throughout history. We serve an amazing God. God perserved the truth without mixture as it is in the Bible all the way down to our time. Yes, the Seventh-Day Adventist Church was establish on the same Bible truth as the Celtic and Waldensians people. The Celtic and Waldensians people kept the true Sabbath in the Bible that was never changed by God. God's commandment keeping people will always be small in number compared to the world. The majority of the world will worship Rome and keep a false Sabbath. Let us all remain faithful to God's word.
