  • The National Trust for the Cayman Islands Historic Programmes Manager Stuart Wilson travelled to Belle Grove Plantation in Virginia several months ago as part of the International National Trusts Organisation (INTO) Reimagining Sights of Enslavement (RISE) programme.
During his time at the Belle Grove Plantation, Mr. Wilson learnt about the management of the historic sight and exchanged ideas with his counterparts in order to aid his work to protect and promote historic sights in the Cayman Islands; particularly those that may have had slavery in some form.
After returning to the Cayman Islands, Stuart took the knowledge and best practices learnt as a result of the trip, in addition to contacts he forged at the London Museum of Natural History and began planning an archaeological dig at the National Trust for the Cayman Islands,' Jackson Wall Historic Site, with the assistance of NTCI Executive Director, Mr. Frank Roulstone.
Below is a short video produced by Stuart about his trip, which serve as the initial inspiration for the excavation of the Jackson's Wall Historic Site.
The National Trust for the Cayman Islands and its staff would like to thank the team at INTO, as well as the Director at Belle Grove Plantation, Mrs. Kirsten Laise, as well as archaeologist Matt Greer for imparting their knowledge and expertise, which has been a great resource for Stuart in his role as Historic Programmes Manager and the National Trust for the Cayman Islands.
