And I hate that aspect of this channel. It's common to click bait us. I'm moving on to Unsolved Mysteries to lull me to sleep. Disappointing 😞

This isn't the Netflix of History it's a tabloid heading at best.
The part y'all are looking for is at 4:13 . They actually DID discuss the title, so it's not really click-bait. It's just not the entirety of the episode.
It does seem like the channel did morph a little into something else. I do like the historical aspect of everything, the salaciousness of each one doesn't really bother me. And I've seen worse click-baity videos.
The 2nd Baron Berwick was my 13th cousin twice removed. My son says, “Where’s our money?!?” Haha 2nd Baron spent it
Alan Titchmarsh is such an engaging presenter. He's become a new favorite of mine.
To be a conservator, you must have a great love for what you are doing. Nothing else will keep you at it.
I love seeing how much they enjoy everything and how down to earth and relatable everyone is. They really make it that much more enjoyable to watch.

THAT part was “normal” back then.
They married young back then, especially the woman/girl. The younger ones could handle the rigors of child birth. They didn't have medicine and procedures (c section) back then in a lot of places. Most times by the time a woman/girl had her first cycle she was considered grown and would be promised, proposed to or married. And there only two sees back then male and female and you were that till the day you died. Don't judge/ compare things from back then to things today.

That was Chatsworth, owned by the Duke of Devonshire. Still is. That was a true story. The film was called the Duchess. The current Duke & his family live in part of the house & let the public use the rest. 🥰

They left the world richer in art and antiquities, but their wanton hubris made me a little sick, and I'm not a Puritan by any stretch. Surprised myself ! Several generations of that era of English aristocracy and moneyed people displayed a type of disdain unique to them alone.

But even today, we have the new elites, owning islands, super yachts, taking spaceflights....

There are folks all over the world today with a deliberate pride as strong as they had.. or worse lol From the ancient Egyptians, the Romans, the Polish ect.. their has been aristocracy & moneyed people who have displayed again, the same or worse disdain for the less well off.. right up till today. It just seems more defined for them because it's remained in tact for such a long amount of time.. it makes it so much easier to acknowledge.
it's always ironic isn't it.. for example Japanese Culture blossom during Heian period, where they stop copying china but instead develop upon the existing chinese culture resulting in unique japanese culture, their impact was huge thanks to them japanese culture and language is what it is today, at the same time these Heian Nobility are probably the worse, the problem is they are the 1% of the 1%.. they wore 7 layer of chinese silk later even go as far as 20 layer, when 99.9% wore potato sack don't even have food to eat and constantly oppressed, even the 1% bankrupted trying to keep up Heian lifestyle and be accepted at court.
and yet 1000 years later, their clothes and lavish spending contribute to Japanese Culture.. as is in many culture.
What about russia in that time? And the russians got their wealth from serfs, a slave like class who had no rights & no way out from extreme poverty..

What has changed? Nothing, people with money still act the same..
Now days these manor homes are the only places the 99% can go to enjoy the great art, statues , architecture and scenic vistas with beautiful bridges, secret gardens and garden walks owned by the national trust because the aristocratic children didn't want to be responsible or take pride in their ancestral homes , they now show off their wealth with fancy cars, designer clothing, and jewels and buying up property in the most sought after zipcodes around the world. flying in private jets and living in modern day mansions with modern art ( ugly ) gated communities and the 99% aren't getting in to see those mansions . And these same people are now wanting to take away fossil fuels and other resources telling us to do without and sacrifice for the environment as they hypocritically do what they don't want us to do and who now are brainwashing our children into rebelling against capitalism, and telling us to hate ourselves if we are born white , straight or christian because it's now all our fault because the 1% built a empire a long time ago took us out of poverty and made life easier for us all but now blame us all for the bad decisions their ancestors once did and now their relatives want us all to be held responsible and take all the blame erase our history, culture, traditions, and religion..

And accidentally ended up with a thirty five year old and forty year old. I now require a proof of age, after the third date. So they know how old I am. Northern Native American women are famous for their “youthful” appearance. For hundreds of years white explorers documented that.
One year, we just become “old”. My hair isn’t as midnight black as it was. In the sun? It highlights blond and red. AND currently have a dozen or so white/silver hairs, root to tips….between my forehead and and right ear. My kids want me to DYE my hair…back to the black hair they remember. But I insist “I’ve earned my hair…when it goes silver white, I’m okay with that…you’ll just make it change faster if you keep bothering me about my hair.”

@@eshagberiemperor many places. I’m not so naive as my children think. To give that out on the internet. But my home is two places. My mother is native. And as “required” I am registered with Bureau of Indian Affairs (back in 1968). I have left the decision to register, to each of my kids. Since the US dropped that “little” necessity.
I hold a place with no heat. Wood stoves only. It was the best I could do (back then) to stay off welfare. And break the stereotype of “single native rez mom on welfare”. And we have hit temps of -35 F…-25 F regularly. My decision to barrel on, without aid…paid off. My girls are fierce, in an adventuring way. The one who stressed me out the most, back in the day? Graduated from an (almost) IVY league college…and backpacked Asia. Had to teach English in Vietnam, to get back home. And just left (with her fiancé) Mexico (via Guatemala) for Peru. It has taken them four years. The pair are aiming for Antarctica…even if for a visit. Don’t get me going on my two others. Lol.

I am really flabbergasted at the restorers of tapestry not wearing gloves while handling those precious works of art😢
my understanding is that since gloves would impede their ability to feel with their fingers, it could cause them to inadvertently be too rough with the fragile material and create much more damage than bare hands would.
Your hands are scrupulously clean with certain soaps that eliminate oils & neutralize ph. So much care is taken during conservation .

We have rivers like that all over central Texas because of the limestone.
Same in West Virginia and I fish for brown trout (rainbow, golden and brook, too) for the price of my fishing equipment. Anyone can do with a WV DNR Fishing License w/trout stamp. Doesn't cost tons of money.

There are plenty who spent money both on themselves and on helping others . Probably not this particular couple of course. Although creating something beautiful that those with money will pay to see for generations to come is a form of helping - for starters it creates employment.

The privileged, and the ones with visions of empire and conquering the world. The English masses had no clue about what went on in those grand houses, nor of English conquests overseas, as they toiled away in their fields, many illiterate. Those toilers are MY ancestors. Not these grand folks. I hate being grouped in with that lot. All English folk without that heritage should hate being grouped in with them. We should instead be proud of the toil and daily struggles of our far poorer ancestors, and the fact they had no hand in the atrocities of empire making.

You know, I hope, that that is exactly what most of America is. The supposed story of the USA is not the story of 99% of the population, it's about how the dynasties survived while totally ignoring the plight of the everyday worker. Allow me to be clear, I am in no way a socialist, yet when our politicians push grandiose ideas(The Green New Deal), they never think about how it will, actually, effect the rest of us. They don't care at all unless it gets them a longer stay in power.

It is actually everyone's story, those houses / estates were FULL of toilers working away. The staff outnumbered the owning family greatly. The maids, cooks, gardeners, footmen, home farm workers, carpenters & blacksmiths to fix things and the tenant farms and all their workers. So, I see it as these houses and estates are actually the history of all of Britain. The 'family' being perhaps 1% of the population on a place that size and everyone else a worker - that house is their history as well.
When they talk about how they used manure to compost and heat the pineapple house - it was obvious to me that there were workers moving all that around and keeping the compost 'hot', which is a skill. The staff they have there now can barely keep things functioning at a minimal level, back in the day it took hundreds.
It is easy to look at those places, the rooms etc and think only of the Lord & Lady wandering about entertaining etc, but they couldn't exist w/o workers and they do show that. It is just that it is sexier to have a focus on the 'lifestyle of the rich and famous' to pull in viewers, but the other is there to be noticed; they just aren't being blatant.

This is an incredibly misleading title. Barely any time was given to the story of Thomas and Sophia, especially in relation to the many interrupting segments. And then the show can't even say what happened to her at the end? I've never felt the need to give such a negative review before, but I will because it needs a new title so badly: It's basically "Here's a story about a love match, but really we just want to talk about how much money they spent. [Lots of time on mapping in WW2, tapestry weaving, fishing at an expensive place, saving a sheep farm.] And, oh yeah, he died in Italy. But so nice that we have this house."

It's sad that the father didn't put the family fortune under a perpetual trustee to make sure the fortune wasn't squandered and that the cottages and farms were developed to the highest standards and that wise investments were made. Maybe it wasn't legal, but wise trustees could have prevented many rich homes and families could have saved them from ruin.
