Many of the Pentax Espio will do “fake” panoramic shots using the mask (e.g. 928M). The Espio have much superior lens to the Panoramic wide and have better focus and metering options as well as zoom (not fixed lens). You should be able to find one for $10 or less at thrift stores etc. The other advantage is they will shoot regular 35mm frames as well - so you can mix your panoramic in with your other photos rather than taking a whole roll of panoramic shots.
I've had a Pentax Espio before. They're great cameras. One thing I remember with mine, was that the hinges on the film door are fragile. Mine ended up breaking twice.
It’s funny that we think of the Xpan as the cinematic camera, myself included. But filmmakers shooting on 35mm are using a cropped 2:35.1 gate like this little point and shoot.
I found one of these at a thrift store priced at $5. Mine is a silver colored model branded as 'Ultronic Panoramic'. It went straight into the shopping basket as soon as I saw the 'Panoramic' label on the front. I've shot a few rolls of film with mine. The film gate that crops out the image can also produce interesting flare artifacts that will bleed past the edges of the image. I like taking the camera out on bike rides, as it's so light that I don't even notice it's weight in my jersey pocket.
Another camera you should look at that does this is the Canon EOS Kiss, its basically the same camera as the Canon EOS 500 and EOS Rebel XS except it has an additional option to apply panorama crop, it was made exclusively for the Japanese Market and the best part about it is it uses Canon EF lenses, has AF and can be found on eBay for a little over $50 USD.
For sure! This takes all the fuss out of it but could be a bit disheartening if it goes wrong. Another option as a first camera with no fuss could be the Olympus XA 👍🏼
I have a little APS film camera that has a panorama switch on it that provides a very, very wide image. They don't make APS film anymore but it does seem to still be available as is procession. Definitely cheaper than an X-pan and from what I hear, more reliable. Some of these APS camera were built like a tank. Even Contax made one.
You should consider the Ricoh R1! Very compact autowind 30mm macro, with panorama option at 30mm and an extra 24mm pano. Autofocus and flash. Really nice camera!
Thanks for another great video Jack. Can I just suggest that maybe some other options on 35mm include the Horizon Kompact and the Horizon pro S3 which are both good if you get decent versions of it. Also if you own a Pentax 67 you can get a panoramic kit for it so if you can shoot 35mm film and it’s pretty much exactly the same as Hasselblad X-pan but with the benefit of medium format lenses.
I appreciate learning about a new film camera however, I preferer control over the settings & lens. Considering the price, it is value for your money but sadly not for for your film stock.
Always love notifications saying you've released a new video. Look forward to them every time. Please don't stop creating, and happy new year to you!! 👊
great video, jack!! i’ve been wanting to get into film photography but i don’t have the money to get proper gear, which i wasn’t even certain i was gonna get since i’ve never done this type of photography. this video cleared that doubt and i’ll be definitely buying this camera and see how it goes. great content, man. keep it up!!
There are some minolta freedom models with PANORAMIC (35 or 28mm) that you can find for 35$ and you have flash, autofocus, and you can use films from ISO 25 TO 3200
Have you ever looked at the Lomography Sprocket Rocket and just crop out the sprocket holes? That's what I've been toying with in my head if that would be worth picking up for some cheap panoramic fun.
Good to see that you also have a YT Channel, have been following your IG page for a long time now (and also got featured on it on 25th of April 2020, thanks for that) Ricoh also made a plastic camera that does this, I got myself an ugly as fuck golden one, which didn't even properly function when it arrived although it was sealed in the box, but 10 pounds is worth the bet I guess haha. Seriously, when are manufacturers gonna start producing 35mm cameras again? The demand for film and cameras is the highest since the digital revolution..
Nice! I’ll have to check it out. As for the new 35mm cameras.... I don’t think any major manufacturers would invest in it, but the only brand that still seems to be invested in analog is Leica, so maybe they might make a special edition at some point?
Why not just use crop in post process if you already have a film camera? you would get the same effect? Cheers for sharing. might pick up one of these anyway haha.
Yeah definitely could just crop after but with the viewfinder giving you a panoramic view, you can get a better sense of how the composition will look rather than finding that composition in post
@@PhotoCinematica A bit of electrical tape should do the ticket haha. I'm not serious. Could be a fun way to make location scouting more interesting though.
Hey @Cinematica, would the film have to be marked as Panoramic when getting the film developed, Or just standard as it is just a "fake" Pano? . Love the content.
Hey! To be honest, I’m not sure what labs processes are these days. When these cameras first came out, it was suggested in the manual that you ask for the lab to print in panoramic which would give you a larger, wider print. But whenever I’ve had it printed, I just asked for normal size and keep the black bars on the top and bottom. I’d suggested just asking your lap and I’m sure they’ll be able to help. Hope that was helpful 🙃
Hello! Thanks for this video, I have a question: I want to buy this camera, but do you think that since it has no flash it can be a problem for the photos? In particular for indoor photos. I really like it but the fact that it hanse flash scares me... last question, which film do you suggest? Thank you!
There are other cameras out there that are similar to this but have a flash, maybe that could be a better option. But if you do go for it, get a 400 iso or more ✌🏼
Hey really love your content this is awesome . What is your preferred editing software you use for filmmaking, I'd love to have a conversation and maybe even collaborate on different methods in telling stories through film!
Hi mate! I have been following you for more than 1 year. And I would like to hear from you your daily, weekly routine. Could you make a video about that? :)

It’s crazy how the forced crop instantly makes these images look cinematic. Basically looks like 16mm film or smaller. Good stuff man
Thank you sir, I think the bad lens adds to the low-quality too, but you’re right. Like a CinemaScope 16mm frame 👌🏼
It’s funny that we think of the Xpan as the cinematic camera, myself included. But filmmakers shooting on 35mm are using a cropped 2:35.1 gate like this little point and shoot.
You can pop out the crop unit behind the lens and have yourself a super wide reloadable disposable. Some of these have hot shoes!

love how positive yet truthful your take is on this camera~ happy new year!

The WidePic Shitpan. The panorama camera you wish you didn't have.™ 😅
I think that the MINOLTA P's does the same but with better results

Hey man what profile do you shoot with on the sony a7iii for video?
Cine 4 👌🏼
I've been using my Pentax Espio 115G to get this fake panorama look and I really like it
Yeah nice! I almost bought the 90 version of this recently but decided on a different point and shoot.
try pentax mz5, this is a SLR and it has the same "panorama"
Good to know! Thank you 🙏🏼

WAT..... I HAVE THAT CAMERA, ALMOST BROKE IT
It‘s also a pretty nice camera for millennials because if you shoot it in portrait orientation, it kind of gives you the smartphone look.

Haha yeah perfect for that new wallpaper 😁
This is the Xpan you have at home.
No thanks, I don’t fancy a FAKE panoramic camera.
