The video of her singing this in Hamburg in 1959 is mesmerizing. As the music begins, her face rearranges itself, and suddenly there is Elisabetta the queen standing in front of you. Her face, her body language, her beautiful hands, they all reflect what is happening in her voice. You don't need scenery or costumes. She creates it all with her genius.

And this time I won't limit to just leaving one more blank statement of praise, but I'll try to explain why this interpretation is so far a never after surpassed accomplishment in the history of opera. The acapella beginning 2:30 is one of the hardest introductions written in the history of opera. The line passes from high through center to low register all in one and has to meet the orcestra in just one point in unison. 99% of the singers around the world don't cope to do this puncutally and diminish in intonation. There are hundreds of thousands of recordings that proove it. She does this flowlessly. And in a way that you can never imagine the vast difficulty of this passage. The aria is one of the underestimated ones - people think that there's nothing too special in it apart from the hell of a start. But they're wrong: this aria has a huge inner dinamic and drammatism and a very thorough and logically developed culmination; surpressed hopes and passions. Fears and storms piercing through the heart - and Callas reveals them all in an understandable and relating way: she paints them with her voice. Every phrase is not just perfctly intonated- it's built up like a fortress. A fortress, deep and dark in its roots, sharp and deadly in its heights. Controlled passion. Perfectly thoughtful phrasing. Flowless vocal technique, perfectly controlled rangem dashing might, mesmerising pianissimi, captivating expression of the voice - one that doesn't wobble and sob, one that doesn't possibly need to show off some riches of the flesh to catch attention - one that just IS. And that's it. The absolute classiness. And will never ever more be. Because they don't make this kind of phenomena any more: why should they? Callases don't sell well. The world is bursting with dayflies like Netrebko - whose basic skills and tastelessness match more accurately the level of their audience. Callases stand no chance in the world of Netrebkos. Good that we have those records to only know that Art has not always been dominated by kitch and vulgarism. And their fandom in the face of the very competently speaking "critics" in comments.
Thank you Malena for your professional clarification how difficult this aria is and how Maria Callas succeeds in overcoming its major challenges. To me, Callas is a league apart. There is simply nobody else in that league. That's why comparing other sopranos is always a bit unfair to them. Lastly, music is resonance with emotions. Each of us resonates differently. I tend to resonate with Maria Callas interpretation 80% of the time, and only occasionally, with other sopranos, mostly only for one or two arias. But I don't compare them. Today's stars like Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann and a few more are ruining the beauty of Opera. As you said correctly, kitsch and vulgarism dominate today in Opera. And I will not even mention the latest productions (they have been suffocating us, the real lovers of Opera already the last 10 or 15 years) as there are no words for what they are. I think they "the artists' intentionally do this to kill any beauty, wholesomeness, sacred and delight a true production would offer. This the trend in everything todays' "artists" produce.

She, she was good in some roles, but most of the time that wobble. screeching top notes that turn very sour are just not acceptable as great singing. And most interesting, Tulio Serafin, who gave Callas her big chance, was asked who were the greatest singer he ever heard, he answerd "In my lifetime, there have been three vocal miracles: Caruso, Ruffo and Ponselle. Apart from these, there have been several wonderful singers".
