I have a lawful good character I really want to play… He’s a vampire who grew up on the idea of do what you want no matter what, and for a while did that himself. He drank a lot of both blood and alcohol. One time, he drank to much blood from someone and killed them. He decided he did not like the lifestyle that made him a murderer for no good reason and joined an order of monks that were all about discipline. He lived there for years, after many backslides and slip ups, he finally got a strong grasp on him vampire and refrains from drinking blood as much as possible, and if he has to he tries to stay away from drinking directly from a living creature. He’d planned to stay with his monk order who generally believed in not getting involved, but war broke out and he saw the many war crimes that were being committed and couldn’t stand by it. His general goal is just to keep civilians safe by smuggling them out or directly getting in the way of soldiers getting too rough, but if he has to kill to keep civilians safe, he will, because it is not pointless. As for other people, he doesn’t have an issue with other people’s hedonism as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone, and if it does, he’ll generally tries to step in covertly or steer them away from harm then and there, and then maybe talk to them about it later if he’s concerned it’ll be a pattern.

Re: the player struggling to play lawful good: I have the exact opposite problem! Time and again I come into campaigns determined to play someone evil and sexy and just end up playing another do gooding goober because I hate being mean to people (even fictional ones). I'm sad to hear that you both have had such bad experiences with the archetype :( I never want to stop my friends having fun, but for me I just have so much fun living by a strong code of justice and being kind to people. It's not an easy thing to do if you're doing it earnestly, but it's also true to how I feel and act in real life.

I think one of the scariest things you can hear or say is "so hear me out"
It always leads into the most unhinged things ever said

The is mayonnaise difficult terrain question probably comes from uses for the Alchemy Jug as one of the liquids is TWO GALLONS of mayonnaise and my question is always why?

    • @donniejefferson9554
      @donniejefferson9554 Před 19 dny +1

The fact that you're asking that question is probably the exact reason why it exists. Its a super weird thing that makes a lot of players want ti experiment with it. If I were dm, I'd definitely let my players use it to make a patch of difficult terrain. I'd probably make it slippery like a Grease spell too.
Easiest way to get players to be creative is to make creative thinking pay off in bigger ways than doing standard stuff.

That last story was so sweet! Can't believe the kid was coming up with oneshots EVERY lunch, and to win an award for just being so inclusive is outstanding. I hope that family keeps playing D&D and continuing that wonderful vibe.

Lawful doesn’t have to be just following the law. I play a lawful neutral character that follows a mafia code. If it doesn’t fall into the parameters of her code, she has free will to act according to her own desires and decide what she wants to do with her own morality. But also the main problem people have with lawful good paladin players is they push their personal path onto others. There are plenty of lawful people that don’t feel the need push all of their ideals onto others.

Our group has a leatherbound book made by our DM that we date the session, length in real time and time passed in game. Our characters sign in and we put our level & at the end of the session we write a quick something memorable about the session in character. Ex: "Gnoll got drunk and passed out, found a lead to clan location, saved a halfling from a yeti and messed up some goblins. xo Zara" Or "Gnoll made pretty dress for Zara. Zara destroyed pretty dress in bar fight. Gnoll sad. xGnoll"
It is an easy quick way to keep some notes. We've already been able to look back on previous session notes and have a good laugh looking at memories. 💜

I take the session notes. Whenever our DM asks who remembers what did last time everyone turns and looks at me.

Playing a Lawful Good character doesn’t mean that they’re nice or kind. My favorite example of a mean lawful good character is Dr Cox from Scrubs, he’s so mean and kinda intimidating, but at the end of the day did his best to make sure people got better.

Often it's when they want go understand how a spell works. My two games one is on break. The on break one I was messing with so Mass Effect spell jammer style bits. When the Cleric and Druid basically in character rejected any of the shiny stuff.
They automatically distrusted the holographic a.i I had so much planned.
Lawful good can be about a code

A question that scared the bejeezus out of my DM: "hey, how big is the space? It's [insert number of feet] right?" We were up against a bunch of basilisks, and my DM forgot our Mystic had the ability to teleport everybody away. We teleported to the other end of the field and took potshots at them until they died. The DM didn't even bother making us finish combat. They were like "yeah, you obviously beat them" with their head in their hands 😂

    Un-popular opinion.
Disintergrate is one of the few spells that should not be used by a DM in a long form campaign.
Unless, DM has actual options for getting the PC back, it's such a game ending spell for the player on the reciving end.
75 average damage, and if you hit zero your just straight up gone. For perspective, an average +4 fighter is at 114hp. A Sorc with the same con mod is at 90.
This spell has a no too small chance to straight up murder a PC that uses a D6 for HP and also kill a D8 hp charecter thats just got a scratch from a friendly jab from the barb.

Ayooo!!! I'm currently eating grilled chicken in preparation for the gym around 5 and I'm currently planning my dnd session for Saturday. I'm so scared because it's the climax of a war arc and they'll be doing a siege on an island, it's a dungeon crawl basically. I am planning so many encounters for how they'll approach the situation, it'll be fun but planning is so much work lol.

With the lawful good thing. I've always argued that goodness is subjective, thusly the good part of lawful good is to be determined by the moral compass of that charachters upbringing, social conditioning, religion etc etc. Thusly If you play a Lawful good Paladin following a religion inspired by the Christian church they could, fully within their realm of "good", genocide a tribe of druids cause they're punishing the heathens and that is a good thing according to that paladins church... But thats just my two cents!
