I had a paper craft mini of a random townsperson for the party to rescue from slimes in their first session. The paper craft had a denim jacket and floppy black hair, and I kept miraculously rolling really high for his dex saves to avoid the slimes. My party were obsessed with this ‘emo teen’ and needed to know everything about him. Glob, the name I pulled out of thin air for him, became their guide to the swamp, and now has a whole backstory about growing up in the swamp with a single dad, idolising the swamp gang, and even though they left him in the swamp over 6 in game months ago, they still check in with him. We all love Glob ♥️
I’ve been watching this channel since February of this year. You both have brought me so much joy and just feel the need to tell you this. I’m 30 and both of my parents are very sick, my dad is going through kidney failure for the third time in my life and is waiting for a kidney transplant. My mother has a genetic brain condition that shuts down large parts of the brain and she can’t take care of herself anymore and barely remembers who me or my siblings are anymore. This is the worst thing I’ve ever had to live through and I just want you both to know how much this channel means to me. I cry every time Mags cries when reading out touching posts, we are kindred spirits I think. Much love to the both of you from the US.

14:52 Topic start/Throwaway NPCs that stuck in the campaign 28:50 Dm is using spells that they previously banned because they were "game breaking" (titlecard story) 40:30 My grandpas box set. 46:12 My party did not save me after I was downed in combat. 55:30 (They lied) DM killed my character permanently in the first session. Had me in the first half ngl. 1:01:15 Art
The BEST NPC I've made that I honestly thought was going to be a one off kinda guy was a character in my Strixhaven College game. I heavily homebrewed for the prewritten modules and I introduced a character named Karl, an axolotl wizard and fellow student a few years older, who was in charge of showing the players (freshmen at the college) around on their tour of the campus and getting them to orientation. Karl was pink and wore knit sweaters he made himself and right away the party LOVED him. They began to seek him out on campus during the campaign, getting his phone number and calling him for him for chats or advice. He eventually helped them establish "The Heroes Club" at the school which was a bit like an adventuring party club and made each one of them sweaters imbued with magic that acted as an AC buff, because he "put love into every stitch". My players still talk about Karl and ask if he's going to show up in the completely different world we're currently playing in.....and I may just have to find a way to make that happen!
I REALLY do not understand the hate against silvery barbs. But then in the same breath, people will say casters are too strong, that shield is too strong. hmm...if only there were spells that could use a reaction and eat a spell slot. nah, can't think of a single spell that would acheave that. If your casters are storming your encounters, GIVE THEM PLACES AND REASONS TO USE THIER SPELLS. It's like DM's saying you can use spells in social encounters as everyone will see it. Like, LET them use their spells, it means they cant use them later on in a combat.
Second Thread: That feels like the DM trying to teach the players a lesson they don't need to learn. "See, -I- get to use these spells so that I can show you how unfair and unbalanced they are!" An argument against the players that they never made in the first place. Seems more like he's trying to prove to himself that he's justified in banning those spells because he probably had one player who abused them by either using them wrong or going through some weird loophole to make them busted. EDIT: For that update, I really hope the DM meant that he thinks that encounters will be too easy for players if he doesn't nerf them in some way, and not that he's trying to go for a TPK every fight, or attempting to turn every combat into a weird narrative railroad-type thing where the fight has to go a certain way for the story to move the way he wants it to. Because if either of those are the case, good thing OP got out of there.
Jack had it 100% right about healing in WoW. While better gear makes things a little easier, healers "scale" with knowledge. The more times you see a fight, the more familiar you'll be with when the big damage is going to come out and when and wear to prioritize emergency heals versus maintenance heals. I can't remember who was telling the story, maybe Preach or another oldhead, about his experience talking with some of the best healers who were pushing mythic raid progression being at a point where they were wiping repeatedly on a new boss and one of them was thinking that they needed another week to gear up and come back to the fight, and the other healer was just like "No we just need to see the fight again" and they downed the boss on the next attempt. It also reminds me of when I healed Koralon the Flamewatcher back in Wrath of the Lich King on a fresh 80 Priest with crafted blues and vendor epics. The fight is effectively the third tier of content, so I was punching way above my weight. But I knew the fight alternates between heavy raid damage and heavy tank damage, and the DBM timers let me know when each is going to start. I ran out of mana the moment the boss died, no raid members died, and I was top heals even among healers who had better gear simply because I knew when and where to use my cooldowns and big heals
As a DM, if a player uses Silvery Barbs, they better hope an enemy caster doesn't have a spell that's gonna fire that same round that now, can't be counterspelled, because the reaction was burned with Silvery Barbs. Especially if an adversary caster notices Silvery Barbs was case, and is intelligent or wise enough to know it that caster doesn't have a reaction, here comes the big guns (and it causes some healthy tension and resource management on both sides of the table). And typically, that mindset there, is going to be saved by me for Mini Bosses or BBEG's of an arc. Also for that OP, way to get away from that table SOOOO fast. No way I want to win as a DM, it's a collaborative story, I have put in too much time into the story with my players to want to win as the DM (but I will respect my villains stories to try to succeed).
Penultimate Thread: Hate to do it, but huge devil's advocate counterpoint: If everyone at the table, including the DM, were working to sabotage OP and get their character killed, maybe that's a sign that OP is the problem. There's nothing to suggest that from the context of the story, but it could be that they're unaware that they're a bad fit for the group, and this was the way to kick them out, or at least get rid of a character the rest of the group dislikes to force a new, different player character into the story. I could be totally wrong, but I can't really think of any other reason for the whole rest of the table to get together and plan out killing the character like that. It could've also just been the DM; if they were the one who suggested "Oh, OP has time, they're fine, don't worry about them," and everyone believed them, and then the DM immediately broke formation and attacked the downed corpse of OP before anyone could do anything to make up for the broken formation, that's a totally different story. But if the NPC cleric went, then other people with healing abilities went before the undead killed OP, then yeah, that sounds like sabotage to me.
I litterally had a conversation about the scarab beetles scene earlier today..the entity knows to much, also HAPPY PRIDEEEE im officially going to my first event this weekend 💜

Happy Pride! So for 28:50 i have mixed feelings about the story. The aiming to win is just fucked up as a DM. But as a DM say banning the summoning undead spells whilst using them themselves with their necromancers i wouldnt call a double standard as like it meets the vibe. Admitedly this is me coming from a LARP background where monsters often dont follow the exact same rules the player characters do for ease of the game and story
I think the issue for me is that they took existing stuff and banned it only for players with little explanation, and *consistently* used them against the players. Like it feels weird to take it away from player’s repertoire imo, rather than inventing new abilities even with similar functionality. That’s my two cents at least.
