A 520 HP V16 engine from 1936 is pretty damn amazing if you ask me...
You have to put it into context.
Any human with a decent level of intelligence would be amazed by these beautiful mechanical creations, with zero context required.
Most impressive of that engine is the torque. Back in the day, it is said that they could lap the Nurburgring using only top gear!
The car from 1938, was the fastest until mid 1980's.. Then Turbo charge came.. Just brilliant
There's also the BRM V16, which, while producing similar power outputs and was around a decade ahead of the Auto Union Type C, had a displacement of 1.5l, which is another feat in of itself.
@@foxgaming76yt24 rather an H16
I have no words to express my admiration for Hans Stuck, Bernd Rosemeyer, Varzi and others who hurled these extraordinary cars round a wet, murky Nordschleife on those skinny tyres and less than perfect brakes. The sheer skill - and courage - needed to keep these monsters on that ragged edge between the Chequered Flag and oblivion in the forest is, frankly, beyond my comprehension.
+1946nimrod Bernd >Rosemeyer lpst his life during the speed redcord between Auto Uniion (Today Audi) and Mercedes.
But originaly Audi is based on Horch, but for some copyright reason the had to change their name from HORCH to roman Latin AUDIO - Audi.
Gosh the sound it makes when he revs the engine is insane. Like a dragons roar. Would love to hear someone giving it full beans around a race track. Beautiful engineering
There are some videos out there of it doing hillclimbs. Might not be full beans but it's magical.
Klingt wie ein Flugzeugmotor aus den 40er Jahren des letzten Jahrhundert.
That engine is a work of art! Beautiful and smooth.
These pre-war GP machines are some of the most awesome man-made devices ever built.
😊lp Mom
Honda even had a 125 cc,4 cylinder engine, powering some of it's race bikes back in the day.
Q: what "device" is not man-made ? And if there is one: Who made it ?
@@scrapheaper well, for starters the UFOs which the american government is hiding. and the ancient space buildings build by aliens which we call "pyramids". dude pick up a history book.
Crank up your headsets and just listen to the sound of this fucking engine!
That engine LOOKS so modern! But then you look at the drum brakes. And the tyres!!!
Modern cars are going back to drums now!
I don't understand how anyone could think of anything negative to print about this work of art. Incredible machine! Thank you for sharing this.
Ignorant people are like that.
Its like a donkey looking at a palace!
ubbgn
That was good, Hah! That explains it better than anything. :{ )
Most people don't even know what a magneto is, for example. But their mouths are always in gear.
Its in humans nature to hate stuff we dont understand or can appreciate
That thing is an absolute work of art. I have never seen a V16, especially in a small car (well, not so small, but it's a single seat car. The throttle response sounds so violent and snappy. Auto Union made some really crazy fast cars back in the day before they became Audi.
The V16 BRM
Porsche was engineering these auto unions. Still Mercedes was faster.
AutoUnion = Horch + Audi + DKW + Wanderer in 1932. The name was only used for racing cars. After ww2 Mercedes bought autounion but sold it to VW in 1965 with a new model constructed for them by Mercedes. In 1969 they merged with NSU that played a vital role for the models known audi today. Not before 1985 the company changed to Audi AG.
When you’ve got an unlimited budget from the Third Reich, this is what you build. Absolutely gorgeous
I think Auto Union got 350.000 marks from the national socialists Mercedes quite a bit more in fact Mercedes at first wanted all the money been offered and tried its best to undo Auto Unions bid for funds. No one full knows how much Money Mercedes spent on their racing department in the 30's even their cheaf designer had no idea. He just simple built what he wanted regardless of it costs. But most of their money came in from defence contracts in the case of Mercedes .
Hitler used Mercedes and Auto Union to prove how good Germany is. Propaganda@@clockdva20
I could listen to this all day while staring at the Auto Union for just as log.
R.I.P. Bernd Rosemeyer.
The Silver Arrow ace who died living the dream.
Bernd was going for a LSR attempt. Auto Union accidentally discovered ground effect with a chassis that simply couldn't take the downforce, with the result that the chassis buckled. If only CZcams comments allowed photographs to be uploaded, I could supply photographs of the car - complete with 'skirts'.
That's insane. 16 cylinders, straight pipes, 70 someodd years old...barely any smoke, no flames, no drama. German engineering.
+Ferrariman601 This is a reason why I proudly on my country, in today's times in germany it isn't permitted .
Germany was always the leading nation in technology
+Ferrariman601 The wiring & everything is so cleanly done.
+The real doktorbimmer audi
In Yamaha, engines was designed by Suzuki(popular surname). So this is audi vehicle, engine and everything. :)
The real doktorbimmer
Every company have engineer. Nothing special.
What a beast !! What does it feels like to push this car to its limits, on the tracks of 1938....small tires, barely no brakes, and 450bhp.....!
Braves men !
No run off . Track limits were trees .
Well scary i asume
A big thank you to all those who have left positive comments. And thanks for watching.
Algo así no puede un aficionado al motor, pasarlo por alto. Gracias por ofrecernos la oportunidad.
Quite a few comments about not allowing it to 'idle'. ...the reason is that it is safer for the engine to keep the oil pressure up at this fast tick-over. It brings the engine and oil to operating temperature more quickly with least stress. Also in that era allowing it to idle would probably foul the cold/hard plugs needed. It is a GP engine... doesn't need an 'idle' setting, you are probably hearing it about as slow as it would be able to run steadily with its fairly small flywheel.
peterg2yt No idle jets. Main reason for high revs though is to heat up plugs and prevent fouling so engine can come up to temp as healthy as possible. Wasn’t unusual to still pull plugs to check running of cylinders and replaced with fresh plugs before start of race.
Also long idling wears the peaks of the cam lobes excessively. In any case race engines cannot idle.
Amazing engineering for it's time. Some "modern" engines don't run that well. No lag to be found🙂
MANY modern engines do not run this well, or, will still be running 70 years later.
Tiny flywheel = fast-revving engine
@@Make-Asylums-Great-Again same with short stroke, big bore.

Thunder of the Gods, circa 1930. It doesn't get much better than this!!
Thanks for posting this great sounding race car. As a former race driver I have a metal model of this
car on my desk and admire it every day. Wish today's Formula 1 cars sounded like this.
WAAAAAAAAY ahead of it's time. The goods!
That motor is just beautiful, clean lines, purpose built, perfect.
How could any body make a negative comment on this experience?I am impressed and humbled!
Volvo boys!
I saw this run at the Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting in the late 1950's (can't remember the exact year) , also the Mercedes-Benz W190 turned out. I think Carl Kling was one of the drivers. During the lunch break both cars were driven by drivers of the afternoon race - Peter Collins and Mike Hawthorne. Sights and sounds NEVER to be forgotten! Aferwards, Collins remarked " We should return to this formula!". I second that!
At 1:03 the guy with the the laser thermometer is checking the exhaust temperature to see if any cilynder is underperforming. This method can be used on any engine...
On period the 'wet finger' technique was used.
I think he checked whether all cylinders were working.
Glorious!!!! That sound - pure music!
Beautiful and impressive. Hard to believe that this engine was originally built in 1937 and accelerated the car to over 400 km/h.
....and to death XD
Valdakyr 240 mph? Difficult to swallow
@@auknu Well the official top speed for the type c is 340 km/h (211 mph). But i read somewhere that they went over 400 km/h, don't know if it's true though.
@@terrystevens5261 You mean the WM Peugeot P88?
Authentic piece of engineering, it’s amazing
And yet no one clapped

How can I have any negative comments to the wonderful sounds coming from that beautiful engine!! Good job, guys!!
Consider:
Drum brakes
No seatbelt
No rollbar

Your knees are the crumple zone
can you say....*Balls of titanium*
You forgot: friction dampers
This car has an astimated 550 hp and practically no working suspension. It was able to ho 320 kph

They might be hooked up to the spark leads ;P
BlueLightning Films clad in titanium just 'scuse.😁
Maybe it's me, but I can hear that it is running on all 16... and in the old days they would run their fingers over the pipes to see if it was hot coming out of the pipe, this is all done for show and PR... god bless them, for the PR!
You're not wrong, well spotted !.
There's an occasional miss on two cylinders, right hand bank !.
Nearest the camera.
Watch the two last exhaust stubs closely.🤔🏴
Can we not get into the "my dad can beat up your dad" territory? This is posted for information only, not to discuss politics, it is a piece of engineering from the 30s that was, for its time, quite revolutionary. No arguments or slagging matches or the comments will be deleted.
Jep , its about the thing , so beautiful ... needs nothing more
needs more cylinders, those measly 16 cylinders aren't going to make any power, you need at least 32 before you have a real car.
Ferdinand Porsche prooved to be the greatest car engineer of all times yet again. I saw one of this monsters go full throttle at the Audi 100 year celebrations. Extremly loud, louder then a whole field of old racing motorcycles. Thats a car for real men.
Nathan Dance 32? It takes at least 256 to get good byte on the asphalt.
TheNecromancer6666 .....And he did it with no formal engineering education. He also designed the MB SSK and the first gas/electric hybrid in 1889 at the age of 20. Also designed the drive-train for the Tiger tank. Engineers, after all, aren't pickie about where the money comes from as long as they get to design stuff.
I hear that it has a special compartment under the seat to make room for the drivers extra large balls....
: )

What a glorious exhaust note!!!. Thank you so much for posting this.
520 hp out of 6 liters (in 1936). That's much better than the 2012 Viper engine, among many others…
Indeed. Not bad technique they had.
And the Mercedez had 600hp in the same year :O I think the DOHC and superchargers were a big help back then
***** Which Mercedes is that?
It is quite an achievement, to be sure, but the Viper engine makes 76 HP/liter; this engine at 450 HP/6L is at 75. The Viper engine will also start on cold mornings without a 2nd person to spray starter fuel, idles at a few hundred RPM through a full exhaust system, and has far better emissions. I love nostalgia, but we've come a long way.
Dang! You're right, and thank you for your contribution, but I meant the 2012 Viper (62 hp/l). My point is, this Auto Union was built 76 years ago ;-)
How there could possibly be a negative comment to something that looks and sounds the way that does is more than I can fathom! Pure music!
Absolutely Wonderful! Love the sound!
Toll anzusehen! Der Verbrennungsmotor als das was es wirklich ist:
Ein technisch aufwändiges Museumsstück! Ein Meisterwerk alter Ingenieurskunst!
Gorgeous machine - my only regret not being around then to watch them race!
I love the modern times with all the electronics and so on, but this old pre war enineering and the sound it makes gives me goosebumps.terrific sound and awesome looks of the car and engine. wish there was a timemachine to step into and go back to that era to see them racing in real life.
such a beautiful piece of automotive history! Can you imagine the guts it took to drive that on the track? Definitely says a lot about the drivers of that time.
The drivers probably dragged their balls around the track 😂.
750 kg, 850 Nm at 2500 RPM, 340 km/h max. Zero error tolerance.
Almost 80 years after, the top speeds of race cars didn't changed, congrats!
Actually to some degree modern race cars while cornering better, have slowed down. Some streamlined versions of these cars went 200mph while the record attempt versions went 250+ on the autobahn. Gotta love German engineering.
Justin Haas Modern car's cornerind speed is great. But how fast was an average street car in the 30's?
Borsófőzelék Piskótakockával I wasn't talking about street cars, I was talking about race cars. I'd have to estimate based on similar setups from the 50's that the race cars from the 30's could corner anywhere up to 1.1-1.3 lateral g's of grip. But they didn't have any wings nor did they really know the concept of downforce (although the record attemp cars did have a bit of a ground force element to it)
Borsófőzelék Piskótakockával also the average street car of the time would probably go about 70 mph for the average family car. But the high end sports cars of the day could go nearly 150 mph.
Justin Haas Imagine it with today. An average family car can hit 120 mph. Hypercars can hit 250 mph. GP cars would be able to hit 350 mph in racing conditions. :)
What a machine. I can't imagine racing on the limit in one of these would be the most relaxing experience.
Many moons ago, I built myself a scale model of the Auto Un ion V16 and used to ask myself "I wonder how it sounded...?". Well, now I know - thank you so much for sharing!!
what could be negative about that sweet engineering sound! thank you for posting
Wow. What a beautiful machine.
Technik vom feinsten, der Sound ist irre 👍👍👍👍👍 Viele Grüße aus Germany
what an amazing machine, even with the absolute marvels of engineering the newer race cars have become, these are still just as impressive. amazing exercise in automotive engineering for the time. Thanks for the video
With those skinny tires, it took 8 pairs of balls to drive one.
Great balls of fire, thats what the driver needed.
Wow, beautiful engine, beautiful everything, this is hand built craftsmanship! Nothing like strapping yourself to an engine and going for it!
Great video! Its amazing to actually see & hear one of this beauties run. Back in the 1960's & '70's, The Import Auto Show held at San Francisco's Brooks Hall/Civil Center used to show free historical racing movies & I used to love the ones from the 1930's that showed the ret-engined Auto Union cars & the front -engined Mercedes Benz cars slug it out on the famous European race tracks. Great & exciting races between two top competitors that were years ahead of all the other competitors. Its great to see this car preserved & running!
Thats just a masterpiece oh my go what a beast
Maybe you boys could post a new video where the engine is allowed to idle. I am a mechanic at a W.W. 2 museum and have restored many trucks. Like this car, the engines sound great when they are making horsepower.
For me, I get a true sense of the engines 'heartbeat' at an idle. So I would love to hear this beautiful machine idling. ;-)
Military Dave telephone Audi Tradition....
autounionv16 I don't understand your reply. Would you please clarify what you are trying to say with more information.
Military Dave Audi Tradition run these cars so maybe get in touch with them to see if they have more films.
autounionv16 Understood, thank you for your clarity. Be well.
Racing engines didn't do idling terribly well in those days; the 'plug rating was a bit narrow and you ran the risk of oiling them up......And that's a lot of 'plugs to change if the race starts in 10 minutes time!
Modern racing engines will of course idle better due to more tolerant plugs and close computer control of the mix and ignition timing.
Sounds potent in a modern manner! The way it rews up and down, reminds me of the stories of the Toyota LFA. What a beautiful death (and deafening) machine.
I could listen to this engine all day
Every day
Definitely a benchmark car.
Wonder, a work of art, is really a work of automotive jewellery...
Love the tac! It is large enough that even Ray Charles could see it.
awesome engineering, such purposeful looks, light years ahead of it's competition.
I'm a moron. I thought the engine was mounted in the front and was really confused when I saw the driver sitting the wrong way.
A few years back they sent a sample of the aluminum used in an original engine to a lab to get an analysis and the report came back that it was of a type commonly used nowadays in lawn chairs!. Shows you how much metallurgy, particularly with aluminum (which was not a commonly used metal at the time), has improved over time.
Yes the guys at Crosthwaite and Gardener told me that, also that the engines were so designed that the heads and block couldn't be skimmed as it would alter the geometry of the valve gear, running as it did a central camshaft.
Interesting. They either had (state funded) money to burn or were very confident in their patterns and castings. Maybe both.
An original engine? I understood that all of the Typ C Auto Unions "disappeared" when the Soviets occupied Zwickau and the rest of East Germany in 1945. This one is a replica that Audi commissioned in the late 1990s.
Maybe it was "only" a sample from a gearbox or other similar part but I do remember reading about it and the video poster comments on it. I seem to recall that an original auto Union "reappeared" some time in the past 20 years from I believe the Czech Republic or eastern Germany.
There was a mixture of a C and D type in a museum in Riga. That still had an original engine. It was in a very poor state, there were internal steel pipes within the aluminium casting that had rotted allowing the oil and water to mix. This car was run at the Festival of Speed in 1997. Here is the car in 1999. czcams.com/video/tXEapA65_ew/video.html
I like the guy with the infrared thermometer checking for hot spots right after startup.
what a beautiful piece of machinery, makes the hair on the back of my neck stick up.
Mid engine 4wd supercharged v16 with nuvoulari driving.. the best of everything
4 wheel drive?
Did Nuvolari ever race the type C?
The sound it makes when the mechanic revs it is glorious, like a lion's roar. Otherwise, at steady speed , it doesn't sound much different than a V8 with a cross-plane crank.
It took a man with massive balls to race one of these bad boys.
What a beautiful piece of engineering!
Brass actually, and the McLaren had its engine bay lined with gold foil to reflect the heat.
Unreal wow thats beautiful
That does sound amazing. So good, in fact, that even Goodwood aren't trying to talk over it!
I can almost smell it! What an awesome machine. Thanks for sharing!
Am I the only one who had an eargasm that lasts the entire span of the video?
that old thing sounds like THUNDER
NOW THAT CAR IS A TRUE WORK OF ARTISTIC BEAUTY....WOWSERS....and fast enough to make EVERYTHING SEEM LIKE A BLUR.....and yet handle quick enough to make you REALLY pay attention....
The full-F-1-suited guy with a small camera who comes up to talk with the seated driver and take a couple interior photos is I believe Hans Stuck Jr, (who also drives the rebuilt Auto Unions); the son of a famous Auto Union race driver of the 1930's.
The 'driver' is a mechanic warming the car up and it's Frank Biela with the iphone.
Just came across this, there' s a lesson for young players here; you can see the water temp getting to temp reasonably quickly but takes oil temp a lot longer to get there. Oil temp more important than wasserpump!
The oil temp gauge is broken....
I'd love to hear the idle. Sounds like he was just trying to keep it running.
This is the best video of an Auto Union Warm up on CZcams... to date!
My favourite engine in all the world,in one of the best racing cars ever made.

Well... yes, technological masterpieces with rather abysmal mean-time-to-failure. Taking Tiger I as an example: compare its mean-time-to-failure AND mean-time-to-repair with those of the certainly less technologically advanced M4A4 Sherman. There is no comparison. Finely crafted masterpieces? Or over-engineered, over-complicated boondoggles? The case can be legitimately argued either way regarding German machinery.
I'll daily driver this thing...

WOW! "German Complex' Four of these and they could power a BOMBER. I think it was supposed to be very difficult to control accurately at speed on a race course.
Beautiful, amazing for such an early engine.
Incredible machines...how they reached the technology and used it is beyond me for that time in history.
I suspect a lot was taken from aviation and adapted.
Why would anybody want to be silly and put a negative statement...

Yeah only 500bhp look at the tyres. these things could wheel spin at 100mph and would kill you if you lost concentration even for a millisecond not to mention hitting almost 200mph. Remember there's no seat belts carbon safety cell even the driver just wore leather caps.
I’d chance that just to drive it for a few minutes.
