You absolutely do bring chaos to a situation, but no way are you an imposter! I didn’t realize that Brute force engine was built so long ago. I’ve been watching your channel for so long. I know I was watching way before that. I think back when you were first designing the PIP motor.
The whole social anxiety thing as I experience it is only in my head. You have to trust your audience. Taught a senior high school class one time as my fiancée’s father was a teacher. I stayed up well into the night trying to write a script for a 45 minute class. Gave up and winged it. I rambled on and on drawing on the chalkboard from time to time just trying to get what I had in my head into the classroom. When the time was drawing to an end I asked if anyone had any questions thinking nobody cared, I wasn’t their teacher, was only a couple years older and it certainly wasn’t a test. To my surprise so many hands went up and I enjoyed answering their questions. They all left and I was there with my father in law. I looked at the board and it looked like some kind of alien language. I was horrified but to this day I think we all got something from the experience. You have many loyal followers on your journey picking up hems of wisdom along the way. Keep on being you, I think you’re amazing and truly enjoy the mix of invention, science and most of all free jazz rambling!

How so?
You may want to consider putting the supercharger into the transfer circuit thereby drawing through the crankcase plenum. That would keep the pressure off the bottom of the piston.
We really need to meet up, I found this very interesting and have many ways I can help, along with many different ideas/solutions that can help.
You are doing the things I haven't had time for in my machine shop, but I do have a full compliment of cnc and access to 5 axis machines, plus full fabrication facility.

Please consider running your exhaust valve at half crank speed, with two slots to make it balanced. It will also reduce the friction load from it.

If you run your rotary exhaust valve at half speed and have 2 transfer ports 180 degrees apart then it will be balanced!
but it will be even weaker if the "disk" has two cut outs and two flaps

Love the videographic/photographic artistry you put into your videos. I remember a while back you had uploaded a video how you were trying to achieve a certain view/lens use and you had mentioned it was entirely to tickle your own itch. Im sure one day when your engine has the land speed record at Bonneville i really hope a documentary is made and a lot of your footage is used. Its stunning!
On another note, thankyou for documenting some of these awesome places you have visited. Rotrex, mitotiyo etc. Really awesome to see the inside workings to some of these places.

Just some few crazy jazz suggestions.
Instead of twin reed valves, what about twin rotary disk intakes? And the other thing you mentioned is the return pulse via expansion chamber can possibly be more powerful than the blower output, could this be used as an exhaust valve so to speak? If tuned correctly you could do away with an exhaust valve and use a pulse wave as a momentary valve to keep fresh mix in as well as possibly increasing the pressure further? I guess being a forced induction engine you really need exhaust flow and using an expansion chamber would limit your power band to a set few rpms. Another is an injection setup post blower, I know it would be difficult as the charge through the crankcase is also your oiling but maybe what if that charge was incredibly lean in comparison to the actual charge needed in the combustion chamber. Just enough that it lubricates and cools the blower/crankcase but then with running higher boost and lean mix once it reaches past the reeds/intake it then gets a hit from the injector/injectors bringing that lean high pressure mix up to big bang potential in the chamber. Really allowing good tunability. I don't think Detroit diesels have an intake valve system. They use the ports as a valve bringing constant pressurised air in and then fuel is injected once it is in the chamber.
All crazy jazz I know, but an idea is an idea whether it is good or bad!

Ancient times (the '60s) 2 stroke outboard racing engines used an exhaust extractor which was half of an expansion chamber. It might help with the brute force engine.They were earsplittingly loud anc could be heard from miles away.
Actually tried what you described, a "megaphone pipe", on this engine. Stuff was literally falling off my shelves and walls from the pressure waves. 😂
Dr Josef Ehrlich's engines were known for their excessive volume, it was said that when his split 350 single was running on the Isle of Man it could be heard in Blackpool. I have a couple of his development engines that use his boost port technology, I haven't done many experiments with pipes yet as I only got one running really well fairly recently. I intend to have a bit of a play with piping to see where it goes. The engines I have were developed for the French manufacturer Motobecane, it was the one used on the D52 model and also on the Raleigh Runabout and Wisp. It started out at something like 1.7 bhp and ended up at 6.2 back in 1966, where it took a 1 hour 50cc endurance record in the skillful hands of Rex Avery. Dr Joe went on to develop outboards for Evinrude and yes, some of those were unbelievably loud. Dr Joe wanted to develop my engine in to a water cooled version, he believed he could double the power, sadly the budget wasn't there.

I've played with that mutitoyo machine about 15 year ago. We had one at a company I worked at. looks like nothing changed since then. Still looks exactly the same. I've used it to make 3D models of gears I had, inside a 2 stroke engine.
(with that machine, i mean the one where the cylinder went on in the beginning, with the touch probes. ).
Question? (please don't take as negativity! But I can't comprehend how that design of rotary exhaust valve could take anywhere near the pressures you are expecting without unacceptable deflection (my working assumption is the exhaust pressure may be 10x the inlet pressure. I'll wager you could deflect that disc a couple of mm with a light finger push?
I hope it's stiffer than that . if the final goal is to build 30psi of boost I think the exhaust port is at least 1si so that would be around 30 pounds pushing on that valve. I don't see a future where that valve is rotating 10+15krpm while being pushed with 30lbs and maintaining sealing well enough wither by contact + lubrication or be close with very tight tolerance to keep boost in the cylinder long enough
Keep in mind that the valve is already fully open when the exhaust port opens. It closes at BDC and only has to hold whatever pressure is in the intake system + the bit provided by the piston until the exhaust port is closed.
It definitely works, was running fine a few years ago.
@@2STROKESTUFFING maybe you could test the valve separately with an air compressor with a big enough air tank. you can do static test to see how well it holds various boost level between 0 and 30 psi with the valve closed then do dynamic test by spinning it progressively to the kind of rpm you're expecting and see how the friction ramps up with boost.
"Running fine" and holding 30psi of boost could quite different, I don't remember the brute force engine making a lot more power that ,would have proven the boost worked. not in a way that could be measured reliably with the old dyno
@@2STROKESTUFFING I think the very underrated idea that you had recently though is matching the pressure waves of the supercharger with the opening of the intake port. that could be the genius idea to increase the boost similarly to traditional two stroke resonant exhaust
Alex, well done on the interviews and getting out there.
My social anxiety is on a lower level than yours, more in the range of "quite shy" but years ago I decided to become a (photo)journalist, so I had to get over it.
I have sat in on or conducted many interviews over the years and more on more on video.
So here's a small piece of advice: Instead of saying "yeah", "exactly" and so on during the interview, just nod:). That way, you will get even cleaner audio on the interviewee.
That said, it takes a little while to get used to both for you and for the non-trained subjects, but if you explain it up front, it we are talking mere minutes. And as said, the nod makes up for a lot of verbal confirmation.
On the other hand, you can also treat this more as a conversation, but then to be nitpicky, you should almost have a camera guy so you would be in the frame more. Mind you, I am not saying you shouldn't steer the conversation and allow jokes like you do so well here. Just while the subject is answering, switch to the nod:)
Anyways, just a little piece of advice, not critique, you did well already! And cudos for bringing the big cam this time and keeping with the cinemascope - though I can't yet tell if you shot this anamorphic?:)

I have digital Mitutoyo calipers from 200-1000 at work. I am often surprised how accurate they are. I love the Mitutoyo stuff. In my opinion no other company make such good measuring stuff.

Carburetor jets are broached. They are generally really good about being a very consistent size even if they aren't exactly as stamped.
You can't drill carburetor jets because it messes up the flow. So even the cheapest jets are really good about being the right size.
theyre sized after punching through. numbers an equivalent flow to a "defined" orifice. the length, and as you say, the bore of the hole itself makes a difference.
i still drill jets :)

I personally wouldn't time the rotary valve to close at BDC, but rather more like 20° ABDC. I think closing the exhaust port at BDC will hurt scavenging badly, but I could be mistaken.
You might try cutting a V notch in the closing side of the valve so that it gradually closes, so that it'll be mostly closed at BDC but doesn't entirely close until about 20° ABDC.
I tried it on intake rotary valve nitromethane engines with great success, I was able to gain an additional 10-15° of crank rotation with the rotary open, which in turn allowed for an additional 2,000rpm under load. I don't have a dyno, so I can't provide power numbers, but it works.
On plastic intake manifolds for cars they run metal bushings inside the bolt holes so you don't deform the plastic when you tighten the bolts. Maybe thats a good idea for the carbon fiber 3D printed parts.

This sounds like a great path. I need to go back and watch the earlier videos, I started watching when the centrifical blower was used. 1:1 sounds WAY too high, 2:1 and lining up the pulses sounds like a REALLY good idea. Maybe run a 4 bar map sensor with low latency and use it to help you tune timing. Also, it may be benificial to run a larger plenum area to help smooth out the intake charge.
I would still run like 3:1 then slap a turbo on it and put 2 bar of pressure into the supercharger lol. It's going to be hard to hold all that pressure though. I am only running 40psi of boost on my little 4cyl diesel in my daily driver and I blew the diaphram apart on my TurboSmart RacePort blow of valve which is made for like REALLY high power applications. Above 60psi people start blowing intercoolers apart, like I doubt that intercooler you showed earlier could handle too much pressure before it blows the tanks off. I am really not suprised you had leaks all over the place with 1:1 ratio as there would be times that the charger would be pulsing in to a closed plenum :|

Love the build, the waste gate just doesn't look like till get good flow. Yeah coming off throttle I'm surer you hear it open but when 14psi are flowing thru that thing at 17k rpm thrrottles gonna shut the wastegate will make a noise but that thing is toast once you get it tuned to its full potential. Something is gonna brake i just dont hope too bad.
When you were talking about your 3D carbon printed part and you were talking about clamping it down and causing deformation you can actually use a metal bracket or a metal plate that is finely tuned and then use that as your clamping pressure so that way it won't create no deformation

If you run into the exhaust disc valve problem again look in a high temp electronic qev valve that you could time to open when you want it too

You can run the compressor and the crankshaft unattached just to test what happens, try to generate 2 bars of pressure and manually rotate the crankshaft to see how it behaves if you encounter any unusual stresses.

'Ellwood Hybrid' 500 cc engine breathes via the crankcase, induction to which is controlled by reeds. As the piston descends, it compresses the charge in the crankcase and this is admitted to the long intake port using yet another reed.

The exposure to the fuel changes the comp of the reeds . And thay Crack because there not the same thing after exposure to the solvent
can't wait until when that thing rev's to the moon and cracks the cylinder and you sit down in front of the camera with your glass of apple juice knowing, it was the day real power was made.
