I'm from Germany - The Feuerzangenbowle is more of an older tradition that isn't oftern practiced by today's generation. The main reason why it still is a thing is that there is an old and beloved movie from the 50s called Feuerzangenbowle which is still being broadcast today and which keeps on reminding us of the tradition.

@@nickxandar7720yes! In Indonesia they also have something called Kue putu. What cinches it as a Filipino dish (besides it being purple) is the part about it being for Christmas. The Philippines is a (edit: majority) Catholic country unlike Malaysia and Indonesia so having Christmas traditions like eating puto bumbong and bibingka after super early morning mass, or "simbang gabi" before christmas is very Filipino. For me, christmas food that isn't KFC + asian country = most likely Philippines

Yay! Feuerzangenbowle! Takes me back to the 1970s here in Germany. It's coming back into fashion again now. Fun fact: The German word for the cone of sugar is the Zuckerhut. The Zuckerhut is the German name for the mountain in Brazil with Christ the Redeemer on top.
Also there is a famous book/film called the Feuerzangenbowle which is an absolute classic comedy from the 1930s.

Actually puto bumbong uses pirurutong or black/purple rice not ube traditionally and the reason it's featured during christmas is because it serves as the breakfast food of farmers after simbang gabi. A form of carbohydrate loading before working the day in the fields. This was done during the spanish colonial period.
Using ube or purple food coloring was done in later years much later than when the tradition of serving it around Christmas so the ube crops being prolific are completely unrelated. 😊

The story of pan de jamón I've always heard is that it was first made by a portuguese baker (many bakeries in Caracas are owned by portuguese immigrants). The bakery was struggling and his wife told him it was because he was making stuff for the portuguese market, he had to change. So in desperation he tried to mix savory and sweet, which is really popular in Caracas. Olives and raisins are already part of the main dish on Christmas eve, hallacas, which are also a bit sweet in Caracas. So pan de jamón has Christmas flavors and became an integral part of our Christmas dinners.

    2:36 I guessed Italian as well…
5:32 I don’t like mulled wine, but this is such a fun thing to have on a feast table 🤩
10:27 As an Indonesian, I knew right away where it’s from because we have something similar to that although we don’t necessarily relate it to Christmas.
18:39 These sweetened egg yolk threads can be found in Southeast Asia as well, so I thought it must be from an ex-Portuguese colony, but probably not in Southeast Asia since _puto bumbong_ was already there. The answer nevertheless kinda surprised me 😅

@@andieluke1366 IKR? While there are versions of _kue putu_ with purple yam as well, but the Filipino version is slightly different, the color deeper and the flavor heavier. I think it’s because they add butter in their _puto bumbong_ while ours is made without. Although I have seen _putu bambu_ with cheese topping as well.

    • @ulrickai
      @ulrickai Před 5 měsíci +2

Yeah, while it is a treat to have in Xmas in Philippines, it's not really something specific to that holiday here either. Often have it with butter rather than condensed milk on top. Different regions do top it differently though so you'll find some with and without cheese, come heavier because of using rice or just a powdered mix and so on. Though yeah, I'm sure many other SEA countries have a variation but the presentation of it is very Philippines, so it was easy to tell even on the thumbnail 😂

Really nice seeing you try something from Portugal! I spent most of the video thinking you could feature Bolo Rei or Bolo Rainha, both are very traditional Christmas treats in Portugal and I was really surprised and happy when you revealed the Lampreia de Ovos =) Merry Christmas to the entire SortedFood team!

As a German, I immediately recognised the Feuerzangenbowl! Funny thing is, there's a very old German film called "Die Feuerzangenbowle" starring Heinz Rühmann (no color, only black and white) about a famous young novelist who goes back to school. When meeting up with his friends on New Years for a Feuerzangenbowle (thus the title of the film), all his friends talk about the fun they had during their school times and how they pranked their teachers (note: they're all men, so they went to an all-boys-school where all teachers were exclusively male as well, those were the days - it's set in the early 20th century, likely before WW1, but I'm not sure).
When the young novelist reveals that he only ever was privately tutored, his friends resolve to make him go back to school in order to finally have this crucial experience. So he enrolls in the graduation class of an all-boys-school. (you usually were 19 or even 20 when you graduated from school back then, and especially young men were seen as grown up, so it's more comparable to our uni years nowadays rather than high school)
All the teachers in this timeless comedy are absolutely iconic. I don't think there's a single teacher at that school who is normal.
This is back when frontal teaching was still a thing, and teachers punishing their students was considered necessary and important.
So it's both funny and a window into another time. Sure, by modern standards the depiction of relationships between men and women are ... improvable.
But I think everyone can at least to some degree relate to the fun, annoying, boring, etc. teachers that are shown here.
Also, it's pronounced more like "Foyer-tsung-un-bow-luh" in German, if you want to be pedantic, with the stress on the first syllable. :D

Feuerzangenbowle is a yearly tradition in my family. My parents invite friends over. The event of the Feuerzangenbowle usually happens after a small food intake, nothing special, for january my mother has planned an onion tart. After the food, we switch off all the lights and do the Feuerzangenbowle in darkness, then you can see the blue flames from the alcohol burning.
Than of course is a lovely memory of my childhood. Have a look into one of Germanys classic black and white movies called "Feuerzangenbowle", where friends come together and think about the hypothetical idea of one of them going to college (he was schooled privatly) and playing fast and loose with the professors.

Feuerzangenbowle is a great tradition where I live and a nice opportunity to visit and discover the real Munich aside from the overly crowded Oktoberfest. On the same cite the Oktober takes place there is a huge christmas market festival every year (tollwood) that even sells Feuerzangenbowle in special cups with a little plateau on the side for a burning miniature sugar cone that drips into your cup directly (better wait for it to burn down if you want to keep your eyebrows 😅)!
