Lol, I had my trimming done for me! Our son came for a visit over the holiday weekend end brought his two large dogs. Within a minute of arrival, the dogs had knocked over one of my coleus pots (it broke) and whipped off another couple of the taller coleus with their tails! 😮 I saved some of the broken stems and am rooting them up to replant. Your videos taught me that coleus are forgiving! ~ Sandra

awesome video. I have a great variety I found at a big box store, Alabama Sunset, that looks beautiful in different settings. Ranges from a yellowish green in shade to a deep burgundy or marron in full on sun. I have 3 in different places and they each look unique

Reminder for beginners: Even if you keep coleus in shade... when you have a heat wave or windy weather, check them a few times per day because they will dry out faster under those conditions.
Very True Thanks Pat. I apply this inside my Greenhouse with the Oscillating fan....On really Hot ( outside) days I keep the fan on a straight thru vent as opposed to Oscillating which increases the evaporation.....but still keep an eye out for insects seeking shelter under those nice big leaves!!!

Hello again and your kindness is greatly appreciated!! Although Coleus are best suited for both Sun& Shade... there are Those which are labeled as Full Sun Tolerant. Like the Defiance or Fishnets....but not without consequences. Their colors or patterns are affected by the Extra Sun. And watering requirements and feeding are increased. So all are best suited for a mixture of sun & shade. The Creation of our World and All of its magnificence is quite an overwhelming intangible prospect...I believe We as humans are included in that and We pay homage to our deities to allow us to put the ENORMITY OF UNDERSTANDING it all into our own context.
And yes those Feasts of Color... did Well in full Sun...but I did move them to shady areas on very intense Sunny 🌞 days. All those you earmarked were very successful healthy plants the whole season!!
Thanks for a great video! I planted some coleus seeds in pots and some of the leaves are totally green with not a trace of color. They are exposed to sun/shade at my east bay window. I mist them morning and night. They are still young, about 3" high. Will they eventually get some color?

I wouldn't Mist Coleus...they really don't like wet misted foliage....unless it's extremely dry where you keep them ...buy your better off regularly watering the soil every few days or when clearly needing it. Regular watering is best...not saturated...and Do not allow to dry out... But it sounds like your window is providibg great light!! As for the Color.... I planted a total of 450 Coleus...So far approx 12 are completely green. It happens....some people like the greenery to mix In pots. Yes they still may and many probably will eventually develop stems with the color pattern from which the variety they are supposed to be. I've had that happen.
Hi Jim. I trimmed my coleus yesterday and want to know if I should cut the very tall ones back shorter. It was 113 degrees in my yard yesterday and I moved all of them under a tree. The faded leaves from the sun I cut off.Now rather than bushes I have a skinny group of plants. I was hoping to keep the bush shape but I don't even know if it is an option now. Appreciate your show. I did not know all that stuff about the humble coleus. And Ive been growing them since they were only one color!!!!!!!!!
Hi Kay...You are in a real Frying Pan Heatwave!!! How Tall you keep your Coleus is a personal preference. I'm the wild they want to grow taller & taller then reseed themselves.... Trimming your Coleus down to a manageable height creates a fuller more lush plant with more foliage and less legginess so it may handle the heat better.
Thanks for the comeback. It is terrible today. I ended up with heat exhaustion. But all my coleus are under the biggest tree We have.I’m thinking of just pinching them back an inch or so. I watered them last evening but boy were they dry this morning!

It would be really cool if you would conduct A/B testing, i.e. take 2 semi-identical coleus and put one in shade and one in part shade/sun

EXCELLENT Lisa!!! I have them in different sized pots. If repotted into even larger pots they will Really take off...which goes for most Coleus.....

Yes !!! That's perfect!! Eventually you'll find the ideal spot which is usually a good mix of both

Yes you absolutely can root them. I chose not to because I have enough of that variety.
